So i never had the chance .17hmr till today and it was great. Fuck dem squirrels.

So roughly the same $ buys me a bca upper "kit" ie all the stuff needed to fire hnr OR a savage 93r17 (what we shot)

I have ar lowers and no need for z paperz with the kit and get 10r mag. The savage was fairly hefty and bolt action was not an issue but the 4r mag was a nusance.

Short and light is the idea, the savage was just slightly inconvienet for the shooting stiuation.

Am i a cheeze dick asshole fan boy for just wanting to use the ar?

.223 is 5 cents more per round. I wouldn’t even bother with .17hmr.

With what HMR costs, no way would I want one in a semi.

I bought one of the savage thumbhole stock deals when they first came out. Probly the only hmr out there that isnt a tack driver. I also had issues with every magazine spreading apart after 200-300 rounds.

17hmr was not designed to be in a semi auto. It takes some real work to make it work right and the early attempts ended in recalls due to safety issues. I had one and it was meh. Its a bolt gun cartridge

You can get a 10 round 93 mag, or the A17/B17 from savage which uses a rotary mag like the ruger.

If you are serious then get a CZ 457, or the combo so you can shoot cheap or 17 StackPath

My CZ455 22lr will ring steel all day at 300. Once you shoot one you can't go back to savage for rimfire

I dont care for heavy barrels on most rifles. Grabbed a CZ 455 American, I think? I dont remember lol. One of the few 17's I have found that had a skinny barrel on it. Wacked it down to around 16". Damn thing feels like a toy:laughing: It is a very handy rifle

BB gun for scale:flipoff2:

17 hmr expensive? Really? There for a while it was cheaper than 22lr.

Funny this came up, my son was asking me about mine last night.

I have a remington 597. Semi auto With matching scope. It was the one that was recalled and they converted them to 22 because they were blowing up on people.

Never sent mine back though. Did not abuse it like other people I guess.

Anyway, they are a great round. especially if you are shooting small game or noise issues compared to the 223.

Guy here at work had a 17 hmr custom made for prairie dog hunting. His last trip they went through over 5k rounds. Must be nice to have money.

I bought mine because I had a skunk problem. I was hitting them with 5-6 22lr rounds and they would still make it back to their hole.

Now I would hit them with one shot and they just collapse.

My son has a 7mm. We were shooting targets at 200 yards. I could hit center with the little hmr, he never did with his high dollar 7mm.

Decent round, I believe it has it's place.

Looking around online and I'm seeing stuff in the $12-$13/box range. Thats a hell of alot better than anything I can buy local. Goona need to stock back up I guess.

HMR's are a pretty impressive round for what they are. Shit seems to die pretty quick compared to a 22lr. Noise isn't much more, and I cant say I have ever heard one ricochet....

Love my 223's but sometimes those are alot more gun than needed.

I've got the savage 93 whatever. I have a cheap scope on it and it does awesome on squirrels. I will pick up an A17 at some point.

I don’t recall the model number, but my mom has a left handed Anschutz in 17hmr that she’s popped thousands of prairie dogs with. I’d go with a bolt gun.

Those are nice guns too. Course if you are goona spend that much. Might as well go all the way an buy a cooper:flipoff2:

I want to say that they were the only game in town for a left handed .17 at that time. I bet she’s had it close to 20 years. 15 anyway.

This thing is my gold standard for accuracy. Stone stock 93R17 BTVS, it's the first year model with the AccuTrigger on their rimfires, '05-ish. I actually waited on the gun shop to get this in stock, bought the first one that arrived. Had to go silver with the old Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 to match the stainless. :grinpimp:

It's more accurate than I am with the Hornady 17 Gr Vmax.

I've got a first gen A17 too, I like it, but semi auto and .17 HMR is an odd combo. It's probably in my head, because I've got a .22 WMR 597 (laminate wood, heavy barrel) and I love it.

More potato photos!

A17, I put a DNZ one piece scope mount and a Vortex Diamondback HP 4-16x42 on it.

Pair of the .22 mag 597s. I bought these after Remington discontinued the .22 WMR line, ordered 2 and there were ~80 left in all distributors in the country when I ordered them, one for me and one for the FIL. I love this thing. I've heard not great stuff about the 597, but both of these have been great.

.223 is slightly more expensive BUT the thing you have to remember is ricochet potential. .17’s just don’t make it to target if they encounter anything and that’s great if it’s a concern. I’m convinced the .17 came about for the soul purpose of killing ground squirrels lol. I have one of the first CZ’s that came out and it has stacked em like cord wood. Go bolt gun to take advantage of the accuracy potential.

The mags only have 4 tabs keeping the sides from spreading. A center punch will get them a lil farther down the road. But I would consider the mags to be a consumable part

I have a Savage A22 mag. I really like it and what sold me was the rotary mag. Not sure if the 17 is the same way but it only likes the CCI ammo made for it. Thought about getting a B or a Ruger American hunter in 17. I'm a big fan boy on the rotary mags and hate mags hanging down. If I was building a AR platform I'd build a .204.

That is a big part of it. We're around horses, cows, houses, equipment.....

Not knowing the area yet i asked for "safe shot" before shooting becausr he did and knew where shit was.

I have a 22lr but he mentiined rics specificaly and dont bother with .22+

Yup HMR is what you want for that.

Not goona lie, you wont hear of many 17's that arent accurate. If you just wanna beater truck gun snag whatever savage/marlin/ruger that is cheapest and go kill some shit.

If you have some actual pride in yourself....at least buy the CZ:flipoff2:

I've put a bunch of rounds through my 93R, several all afternoon range sessions with buddies and me competing with increasingly difficult shots at smaller and smaller targets. It's slain hundreds of Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael's cousins on the stock ponds. I've still got the original 5 round mag, a handful of other 5 and 10 rounders, and I don't recall any issues.

Dad was enamored with the .17 HMR after I got one. He was a little put out with mine because he shoots southpaw, and the thumb hole stock is for a normal person. :flipoff2: For Christmas around then, I helped my stepmom secure a Ruger 96/17 for him. For those of you looking for a rotary mag .17 HMR there's another option for you. Ruger killed off the .17 HMR version ~10 years ago, but they're out there.

Left handers dont get the cool shit nearly as often
No need to pander to the defective, this ain't politics. :flipoff2:

I have a savage hmr with Nikon glass and a nice bipod that's a tack driving sumbich. I grabbed a second 5 round mag a year or so ago. If I can't kill what I'm after in 10 shots with a bolt gun I might as well load a single and ventilate my skull.

I dunno man, i went through a stack of mags. They would hold shells but after a bit, if you bumped them when stuffing them in the gun they would squirt out all the shells.

Pinch shit together and hit those tabs LIGHTLY!!! With a center punch and it ussually got you down the road a bit more.

No flies on the CZ or Ruger....

Ar. This model upper is discontinued. I am a little fearful of a .17hmr blowback and the oob tendencies of them though. Keep the bca clean and you SHOULD be fine. Don't place body parts under the magazine...

.17 hmr is remfire exempt for evil features.

There's exactly one 96/17 on GunBroker at the moment. Dad better be willing that thing to me. Jeebus!
