What's new

03 Dakota "The Hustler"

Domer saw you were invited for the run last weekend, bummed you missed it
Ya, it sucks being down right now. I see all the runs going out. I'm over all sad faced. It's fuckong depressing. It's been 1 year since I wiped out the driveshaft. But at least I think I have the transfer cases figured out now.

Final assembly underweight. Everything dialed in and torqued. Did a leak test today.. apparently I forgot to seal the front bearing retainer on the front case.. so doing that, install will have to wait for tomorrow since both cases are full of oil..

On the note of oil, trying something different this time. Rear case running ATF +4 as spec'd. Front doubler since it doesn't have a pump, I'm running some left over Synchromesh I had for my transmission. Since it's all lubed via gear to gear submersion. And transfered via rotational inertia.. seems like it would work good. I mean the aftermarket doubler boxes use gear oil.. so why not.

Took it for a run today to explore a trail route I started mapping in the back hills of Idaho. Ran about 50 miles with 4700ft elevation change. Overall did good. Cage makes everything in the suspension so loud... still fighting with the triple pass Radiator, causes it to get warm. Going to have to have it cut apart and remove the baffles. Other than that, it was a good ride today. Had a Badger hiss at me and start chasing the truck.

Glad to see things worked out for the most part and that you slightly doubled your miles covered in the previous year :lmao:

Why a manual transmission? Swapping my 5 speed for a automatic was one of the best changes I made.

Because i have one already and I love having a manual. I did the manual to auto swap one time in an offroad truck and absolutely hated it.

Went and picked up a GM Nv4500. In good shape and reasonably priced. Also included a bellhousing.. why is it they never have one? Need to start getting engine parts ordered. The tail housing I'm going to have to Re drill to match my transfer case setup.

why is it they never have one?
Because GM people.

If I had to stereotype a brand enthusiast as most likely to trash relevant ancillary parts or just not know WTF they got it's gonna be the GM guys. Bunch of fucking winners in that crowd.

It's missing the shift knob too. Who the fuck takes a shift knob off? :lmao:

Lol.. another one I never understood was superduty 60s.. why are so many missing the brakes?

Because junkyards basically never sell calipers and they get paid good money per core so they're on the short list of shit to pull as a vehicle gets prepped for the yard so every SD axle that ever hit a junkyard is probably gonna be missing them.

I've heard that before. Makes sense.

Now to mate the Gm NV4500 to a Jeep/Dodge transfer case. Did some measuring and drew up some sketches and modeled it. This should work since my doubler is already clocked where I want it. Just need the transfer case bolted back in the same spot. Anybody else ever done this??

Haven't done much. Trucks mostly been sitting. Been dealing with a back injury and trying to finish the roof on my Rv. Over the years I've been battling a heat problem. Anytime it had a load on it for extended periods of time it would get hot. Tried all the common fixes, Spring in my hose, got a real electric fan, flowkooler water pump, thermostat, etc.. I had a 2.5" core aluminum radiator with shroud and fan. It was an Eastwood triple pass radiator. Research says this could be my problem as it drops pressure for each pass. I took it to a radiator shop and asked if they could remove them plates and make it a single pass.. pretty much said it couldn't be done. So went on the hunt for a radiator that would fit in my spot and be able to reuse my shroud. Summit actually had a 2.5" thick 2 row core with dimensions that were close enough. Sorry don't have shiny pictures.. just a couple of installed. Built some heavy duty mounts with rubber lining and got it all installed. Hoping this cures the over heating.

Since I already own too many money pits.. rock crawler, RV, wife, kids... lol.. I decided to buy a boat. (Last summer was in the 100s.) Wife has been bugging me for years for one. I've always loved vintage ski boats.. I found a 1985 Marlin Magnum Pro Skier. Was in a garage for 14 years. Floor has alot of dry rot, but Hull is good, as is the vinyl interior. Going to gut it over the winter and redo the stringers and Fiberglass. Going to try and get it running first so hopefully I don't have to mess with the engine.

I’d try to add an OEM brushless fan, they kick ass compared to all the other aftermarket fans

Super limited on space. Mine flows alot of air, you can feel it from the grill. Pretty sure the triple pass Radiator was my problem.

I recently acquired a full set of Canam X3 coilovers for a price that I couldn't say no too...

My neighbor has the bench and Nitrogen to do shocks. My coilovers I've had for 5 years, and I got them used and never opened them up. I wasn't really happy with them. I ordered the rebuild kits and when we took it apart, it was ancient... and my kits didn't fit. So I grabbed my Canam shocks, pulled them apart and removed the 2" spacer. So now they are 14" shocks. Pressed out the lower bearing on mine and swapped them into the Canam shocks and used the misalignment spacers. Swapped my springs on, and installed them. These have the 3 position low speed adjuster on top as well. See how this handles.. supposedly they were extra shocks for a race utv. I'm gonna run this valving and see how it does and go from there.
