The Mountain Bike Thread

I decided to take my old Jamis Komodo 7005-T6 to have the failed components replaced. It’s just a 26er hard tail but I’ve got a lot of good parts on it and it’s a good ride. The Hayes disc brake levers and calipers are bad. The Deore shifters stopped shifting. I’ll have a good bike I like back under me for under $300 bucks.
I just want to know what’s bike shop is doing for $300. Pretty sure that’s how much it cost have them top the tires off anymore. Maybe it’s cause I live in a ridiculous tourist town, but I’m not exactly sure what I could get for that price.

If you like the bike, it’s worth every dime you put into it.

Both front and rear SRAM brake levers brake lines and calipers, front and rear shifters. Tune it so it all works.

Or maybe my bike is gone forever

That's a killer bike for the price.

SRam levers and brake lines are hydro? If so, and they've been sitting, the dot fluid sram runs might have eaten all the seals in your levers by now.

Looking at saddles... Man choices are insane. Either ergon SMC men , Ergon SM Comp or Wtb solano, volt or silverado... But. I'm right at the split for Wtb saddles between medium and wide. Do you go wider or go on a medium? Ergon says M/L but they only run the 2 sizes not 3 like wtb.

Currently on a medium wtb rocket for 8 years and its started numbing my ass, bits and right foot. Nosing it down helped a bit but still after 1 hour it just gets uncomfortable. (I am wearing chamois under cargo shorts.)

Probably one of the (if not THE) most personal preferences to have on a bike.

I tried so many over the years....many that you mentioned. But settled on these as my every bike, every time, can-ride-it-all-day saddle: The Specialized Power Mirror with ***anium rails in a 155 width.

EDIT: This was discovered purely by accident. Was riding my usual ERGON and the carbon rail broke, so went to a shop to get a saddle to make it through the rest of the trip. Got a Specialized Power one to use. It was a "Wait.....this feels awesome!" replacement. Came home....went to my usual shop to get a Power for my Enduro bike and they said try it with the Mirror addition. I never looked back.

Ill look into that one as well. Ty.

This is the problem I could spend thousands just trying seats lol.

Sometimes (although I've never used it) shops will have a bunch of 'trial' saddles you can use and see what works. Maybe look into that locally for you?

If your bits are getting numb, get a saddle with a wide center slot like RedX shows below. You don't want to punish those nerves and blood vessels too much. There are a ton of cyclists that have serious damage down there, causing issues with getting the wood to work properly.

Switched to bibs and a Special shell. holds the sack up nicely. I ride three different seats, np.

Different bike same saddle. But it was doing it to me on the old bike too before I bought the new (used) giant. Same stem length. And yes 8 years. I only ride max 3 days a week during the spring/summer fall 20-25km rides normally. No winter riding **** being cold.

The saddle is in just as good shape as the day I bought it minus some scuffs. If it ain't broke don't fix it mentality here lol.

A few of the guys I ride with use bibs, but I never understood the fascination. I have never had issue with the regular padded shorts. Current are Baleaf from Amazon. My "riding" pants are the stretchy ones from Costco. :lmao: I don't generally ride in shorts. My legs are not happy with brush contact.

Ya, I usually get the poison ivy/ poison oak bad every year, but now any time I ride, I come home and shower right away with Dawn Ultimate dishwash soap and it's cut the amount of incidents down to almost nil, if I'm out camping I scrub down with the same. Frig even had a severe bout with Juniper that got so so bad I had to go to the ER. If i wash off within 1-2 hrs post ride or post forest excursion I've been good. Now the ticks are so bad already had to go get the anti lyme pills this spring for a tick attached past 24 hrs.

I just got a couple pairs of the longer Sportneer riding shorts on amazon and they're nicer then the previous baleaf ones I had. I tried those Souke ones amazon recomends and they are ****, they crush your junk and give you and inny...

Bibs under shorts is the way. Ride everything from gravel bike to DH that way now. Also works great with pants or at least my MT500s.

I currently got it on my elbow from a climb trail as I forgot my long sleeve. I also have plant allergies, so fox tails leave me with marks. I got home and someone was already in the shower. Didn't think about dawn.

Ended up ordering an Ergon SM Comp M/L and some new one up flat pedals which actually look flat not higher on the outside than the inside edge. Will see if it makes a difference. The new long chami shorts are much better as they don't ride up and bunch up.
