The Mountain Bike Thread

Probably the easiest bike build I've ever done.

Was only like 20 minutes after casually walking to the workshop with a cup of coffee.

The brakes didn't even rub.

This one is the Foundation build, I think it's a hell of a bike for 4500 MSRP.

Performance 36sl. Float performance rear.
Eagle 70 stuff, with an eagle 90 cassette and a GX chain.
Oneup dropper
DT wheels

Pedaling around the yard and it feels really nice. Super supportive rear end.

I'll do a deal for an irate, FWIW.

I’m back to looking for used mountain bikes. Looking at 27.5 or 29 full sus must be XL and looking at under $2K. Found a bunch on pinkbike. The problem with being stuck to extra large means I gotta ship. Never find anything plus sized near me that I’m interested in.

Not interested in Santa Cruz, Scott, or Trek.

Got my eyes on a Devinci, a couple Intense, Yeti, Transition, Cannondale, Specialized.

Anybody got anything for sale in the full figured size range before I buy from some rando?

If you need an XL, then stick 29s or a mullet and stay with 2018/2019-ish or newer for the better geometry.

What are you riding these days?

I have a few good carbon 29’rs found in my price range no older than 2020. I’m not as tall as you but monkey length enough a Large doesn’t cut it.

Pay attention to geometry. I'm 6'4" with XL frames and there's a huge variation in reach numbers across brands and just a few years.

I know.

That’s why I don’t want a Santa Cruz or a Trek. Yeti’s run large compared to their competition and the best fitting bike I’ve ever ridden was a SB95 Yeti XL. I’m lanky with long legs and long arms. My ideal bike looks like a dirtbike with the engine pulled out of it.

Santa Cruz’s are odd shaped and I don’t like the geometry.

My buddy Clemsoncrawler from the old place is 6’-1” and has a 30” inseam with T-Rex arms. He fits M/L just fine. I’ve got a 38” inseam and orangutan arms. I look like a clown in the circus on a large.

Analog bike is a Yeti SB150 Turq 2 XL. Waaaay more bike than I need, but it has saved my ass many times when I've over committed in some gnarly stuff (well, gnar, for me that is).

E-Bike is a Specialized Turbo Levo Comp Carbon S6 (XXL) series 3(?) It's new, I've only got 25-30 miles on it and most all road miles. Still healing from a broken leg and torn tendons from last summer.

I'm a huge Yeti fan, best climbing & down bike I've ever ridden, they've also been the bike to push the geo, everyone else seems to follow. BUUUUTTTTT I'm no expert, so take that as it is.

The SB95 is pre-2018/19 geometry, Fairly steep head tube angle at 67-67°, try bit newer Yeti, like a SB130 or 150 with a slacker angle in the 64-65° range.

And unless you are going to start cross-country racing, go with an enduro bike with 130mm minimum travel. You've never want less travel and probably never regret more travel.

I've done many 20 and 30+ miles days on my SB150 and have never regretted the extra travel or little bit of extra weight.

A quick check on FB marketplace up the hill in Durango shows a few good looking options:
(Yes, I know you said not interested in Scott, but this is an aluminum frame, not prone to cracking like their carbon frames)

Don’t know if the geo suits you but look into an ibis ripmo af. Buddy has been on one for a while and it works good. I see a lot of good deals on them. They are a little heavy but pedal good with the DW link setup

you need this JR4X

2big bronco can pick it up for you and deliver to the norcal rock race on may 8/9th

My kid is moving out of a Alm sentinel. Bought it used (year or two old) and he beat on it five days a week at the local resort (chunk and big jumps). He loved it, just to small now. Solid bike usual suspects for carnage- rear wheel and derailleurs. Solid bike.

He’s moving on to a Zink Vacay, so there’s a SM frame for sale if anyone is looking. Pivots are still smooth and tight.

I absolutely love my Ripmo AF. Mine's a 2023, so v2, I guess. Yes, a bit heavier, but I figure it just makes me stronger when the time comes to upgrade to something else.

IIRC your looking for used but something to keep in mind maybe for the future. My friend is 6'9" and has 2 Reebs built to fit him. He said they are the first bikes he's owned that actually fit him.

JR4X

What style of full suspension are you looking at? How much travel are you after?
Trail. Everything I ride is 50/50 up/down. Hard pedal up, fast rough down. I’m not looking for a downhill bike or a coil spring rear suspension. Trail or enduro will be fine. I’m getting fat and old, just want to go pedal again.

I really love my intense 951 trail. You might even be able to find one of the brand new ones on clearance somewhere near your budget.

I decided to take my old Jamis Komodo 7005-T6 to have the failed components replaced. It’s just a 26er hard tail but I’ve got a lot of good parts on it and it’s a good ride. The Hayes disc brake levers and calipers are bad. The Deore shifters stopped shifting. I’ll have a good bike I like back under me for under $300 bucks.

Want to see if I’ll go ride like I want and that’ll really spur me on to go buy a full suspension again.

Do a 27.5" fork up front ride a mullet.

If you are willing to ride that at all, you will be real willing to ride a 2018+ bike. The hard part about the plan is jumping on a old geo / parts bike and getting tuned off due to the ride sucking due to the uncomfortable riding position, barely adequate brakes, and a rear cassette with limited options:grinpimp:. Dropper post?
