Been building this 88 Comanche for 3 years now and decided to do a build thread on it as I have a ton of pics to go back on. Was hoping to race last koh but life got in the way. Picked this up from the previous owner who rolled it on its side and roof, crushing the roof in the back and blowing the rear window out. I don’t want the purist hating but it was slightly tweaked when I got it…

Here is the jeep slightly cleaned up and interior out. At this point I was trying to figure out Dana 44’s or tons. What drivetrain and how I wanted it to look.

Pretty much a rust free interior and ready for some much needed love, this jeep was a factory bucket seat black interior and all that is moving to another Comanche build I’m saving parts for. That one will be a daily driver with 5.9 magnum and ax15 on tons and 37’s, with ac…

Stripping the jeep of all its drivetrain and getting ready for the frame stiffeners and grabbed a set of 99-04 superduty axles

Axles, 12” radflo shocks, 2” bumps in pinch and pin top for front and back. At this point I was trying to figure out what leaf spring setup I was gonna do. Either junkyard build re arched, Deaver, national… ended up going with some 60” Deavers built to my spec for some go fast which I’ll share later on

I decided to do a 2x5 1/4 wall rocker replacement per the class rules. I kept the stock door bottom as it was easier to French in and gave great clearance over stock already. And those are 2x10” 44” tall wood jack stands holding up a bare shell…. Been using those for years for xj builds for the undercoating removal and frame stiffeners. Flame away 😂

Deavers showed up and they were stripped and set at block height and cycled. I didn’t like how tall it was going to be with a compression shackle setup so I drew up a tension shackle setup and decided to go with that. I lost a little clearance in back but I will get way smaller lifter and a lot more compression and droop out of it. On paper it shows 6” up travel and 9” droop with the tension. Pics later on of the new rear setup, these were initial setup pics

Front axle stripped, artec truss on, inner engine bay frame supports on, PSC one ton xj steering mocked up. Ended up doing 1/8” plate on the entire inner chassis from front bumper almost to rear bumper and the outer chassis got 3/16” bumper to bumper. Ended up not like the artec coil mounts, trackbar, and swaybar mounting points as I realized this needs to be custom. I reused most everything but redid everything on it.

Picked up another 4.0 and started building a stroker 4.5 for it. I built a 4.5 for my other Jeep yj and it party’s pretty good so I changed the recipe up a bit on this one

Did you consider spring under?

Port matched the heads. Smoothed the bowl transition. Raised the roof a hair and took it to the flow bench and checked uniformity across all ports. I wasn’t going after a flow monster but I saw an improvement across the board and called it good enough. On paper this motor will be 270/320 but will rev fast and hard. Hypereutectic pistons in the stock bore size, balanced rotating assembly with flywheel.

I did but didn’t want the hang up points as the leafs would be in the dirt on 35’s. Looking back I would do spring under and portals. I’ve been talking with 74 weld and the have portals made for the superduty. I have more pics I’ll be posting later on of the new rear shackle setup

And I’m just photo dumping/ tech dumping as I go through my camera roll. The jeep is currently a roller and am working on brakes, fuel system, and interior currently. Ask away!

Engine done, cam picked out to not lose low end but be a revver, roller rockers in and compression ended up at 9.6:1 so gonna run 91 or 93 and call it good. Picked up a Dana 300 Behemoth drivetrain flip kit/cable shifter setup. Has all stock internals but I bought every option from JB conversions. Now has 32 spline front and rear outputs. 4:1 gears and a cable shifter setup. Ended up changing my mind once this was in and bought an atlas so this is on the shelf for another build

Wheels and tires showed up, got 6 vision beadlocks and had them powder coated safety orange since they will match my other jeep, got 6 kenda klever mt’s for a good price and got them mounted up. Lesson learned on changing powdercoaters, make sure they mask the bolt holes otherwise you are sitting in your living room with a drill and tap cleaning out 384 holes…

Decided the racecar deserved a shop to be finished in, 24x36 shop in the backyard

Finished the shop and electrical to it. The foundation is 6” and 8” in some areas where the mill and lathe are going, and the footing is a 24” deep x 18” wide with 1/2” rebar 18” on centers. Finished the floor epoxy and started moving in the lathe and mill and moved the blue Jeep in to stop cats from sleeping in it

Happed to go to pick n pull and there were two Comanches, I tried buying the shortbed and and they said no. Thing was spotless so I stole to roof from a pillar to below the window, the bed and I cut the long beds roof off to swap my roof with since it was pretty crushed in

Swapped the roof to a straight roof to start with. Jeep is getting partial exocage so the new roof should stay somewhat decent throughout its life

Added door stiffeners and started to 97-01 interior and exterior swap. Decided to use the ironman4x4 belly pan for the build. I bought another long arm crossmember and ended up using that on my other Comanche as it won’t need belly protection since it’ll be a street queen

Cool build, have you wheeled at the hammers before? I always suggest wheeling there as much as you can before race week.

Also, I wonder how you will like the 4:1 it will kick ass in the rocks but may limit top speed in the choppy crap

Ha I think I saw that Moss Landing one online but never got time to go scavenge parts from it.

I’ve been wheeling hammers since 17’ timeframe and go twice a year, we go new years and koh, I am planning on going up 4 days earlier than normal (usually are there the Saturday before the 4400) to go play in the desert and rocks. And I ended up buying a 3:1 atlas and have 5:38 gears on 35’s. It should go pretty good in high range and I’ll have plenty of gearing in the rocks with my manual ax15.

What do you need? I have a ton of sheet metal parts. I have 3 sets of doors, hoods, fenders, a bed and a spare roof if need be. I’m tearing the entire drivetrain out of my other Comanche for a v8 swap. 4cyl 4spd 2wd

how complete of a 97-01 interior swap are you doing? I assume you aren’t keeping hvac or much if any of the stock electrical for a race car.

Are you swapping columns and gauges?

Nothing in particular, I just figured at the least grabbing tail lights and tail gates for spares. That’s weird / lame they wouldn’t let you take the bed.

Was swapping whole interior in at one point minus hvac/heater. Now gonna do a sheet metal dash and the interior I have is black. I am doing to 97+ obdii swap and colum/dash so I can tune it with a hp tuners later

Oh I took the bed, they wouldn’t let me buy the whole car for spare sheet metal, I don’t have spare taillights but might be selling the stock tailgate off this so I can make a sheet metal one per class rules
