Ray Charles Tacoma build

chays2464 do you have any insider info if they are still going to be making the MT2s? I know pro comp is in that hoonigan BS, I see they still sell them but in like 4 dumb bro dozers sizes and 40s. I really don't feel like doing all the work to upgrade to 40s:laughing:, this tire is damn near perfect for my use!

There ilare so many radial Mt tires in 37s and 40s, I can't imagine not finding another one that's super similar.

I'm not sure, I heard they discontinued the 40s. This second set I am on have sucked, Ive already blown sidwalls on 2 brand new 40s. Defintely not gonna get these again

Ahhh that sucks to hear they went to ****.

It was to much load on that long shank, I bent 3 of them and the final straw was snapping the threads off last Rubicon trip

Why not the old tried and true y link style?

made it out to JV for a weekend before Thanksgiving madness, the trails seemed extra chewed up. No breakage for me surprisingly.

Ran Turkey as a warm up, then Chunder. Hit clawhammer then went to Kings Veto. Kings Veto was no joke, I can see why the rear steer guys like it, we wheeled with a lot of rear steer buggies this trip and it makes it intimidating when you are in a trail rig on leafs lol.

That night I tried backdoor and finally made it! The second ledge after backdoor is harder than the first ledge surprisingly. After that we ran Resolution and then hit the hay.

Next day we ran jackhammer (which Colin and I both broke driveshafts on earlier in the year). After Jack we went down Sledgehammer then up Wrecking ball. Someone winched a rock into the main line on the waterfall so everything changed. Colin rolled on it, got him recovered then winched him and Todd up it. Tacoma made it one shot due to the wheel base.

That night we ran Chunder again and Colin broke a front driveshaft so we called it quits, turned around and headed home Sunday for the long 6 hr drive home. Taco worked flawlessly and new steering felt really good, no driveshaft breakage!

What's your wheelbase again? You only bobbed the bed, didn't shorten the wheelbase right?
I am at 128" I haven't messed with the wheelbase to much just bobbed the bed. I am debating shortening it a few inches when I link the back. It works really well for most trails until I get into the tight stuff and then it feels like wheeling a limo

I've done some really steep climbs with ~105" wb, (in super low sling rigs) I don't know how you guys wheel ~130"

But I can see once you get used to it, you might not want to change it too much.

so far its worked really well for everything we have out here, there are times I want shorter wheel base but going up or down super steep stuff its stable and planted.

Got another JV trip in the books, Thanksgiving was a blast! So many people and rigs out there. We went up and down Blueberry, Off Your Rocker, lots of Chunder and Turkey laps, hit Sunbonnet and Outter Limits and a few others I forget the names of. Taco worked great, only thing I found was some broken tacks on the new 1550 shafts. Apparently the caps like to move around in the ears on the shafts so I needed to tack them a few more times in camp.

Todd broke a long side shaft on Susan and then the ring and pinion decided to let go pulling onto the trailer on the last day.

I worked up the nerve to hit backdoor during backdoor bash, it was slick as **** from a rolled yota that leaked oil all over the left line. I gave it a good effort but lost my brake master fluid out of the cap so I couldn't hold brakes and bump it up. Overall Im stoked to not have any breakage, I laid the taco on its side 3 times and was able to drive out of it each time, of course that was during night wheeling so I don't have any footage of that.

Good job on the bracket fix.

Just a PSA, I want to point out the reason it cracked was because there was a major stress concentrator right where the crack started.

IMG_9260.jpeg

Stress concentrators happen at inside corners; the sharper the corner, the higher the stress. Any inside corners (especially in structural applications like a panhard bracket) should have large fillets to distribute the stress. So if you have any other sharp inside corners on any other structural brackets it may be wise to either modify those by filleting the corner or reinforce those otherwise a crack is destined to form.

Ya not the best design on that bracket looking back, it seems to be holding so far. I got 2 yrs out of it before it cracked so if it does it again ill just keep fixing it or cut it all off and go full hydro

Taco survived another JV trip, went out for New Years, smashed a lot of trails, the usuals, Turkey, Blueberry, Offyour rocker, Resolution to Guacamole. Also hit Sledgehammer, Hwy 19-21 and down spooners. Tried backdoor on both lines and just coudln't get it to bump over the top. Truck worked great and had no issues the whole trip!

well I am finally updating this thread, I started a new job so I am not at a desk anymore with time to check the forums. I drove the taco out to KOH for the weekend to help our buddy John Webb in the pits. KOH is a **** show and it reminded me why I don't go anymore. Way to many drunk idiots out there.

Went back out mid march for a buddies birthday trip. My ARB compressor stopped working day 1 so I had to wait for parts to arrive. I had a buddy bring me a new compressor the following day. I thought it would be a good idea to run resolution with no front locker and immediately broke my front drive shaft. It appeared to be only tacked on the shaft so somehow its survived the last 3yrs of wheeling. We welded the shaft back in camp so it was ready for more action. Got the new ARB mounted but the compressor harness was all different so I had to remove the old harness and rewire the whole thing on the lakebed.

Once I got the taco back in action we ran Hwy 19-20, spooners, outerlimits, claw hammer, off your rocker, guacamole, resolution, turkey, chocolate and I went down backdoor when I had the broken drive shaft. Got down backdoor and had to get pulled out of the hole because its so deep.

I don't have any trips planned until Rubicon for 4th of July so in the meantime the taco is serving as daily driver.

I finally solved my air filter issue, I had a K&N filter that sucked up so much silt it stalled my motor out and almost killed my maf sensor. I got a dry filter and filter sock that are huge compared to the K&N and so far haven't had anymore issues with filtration.

Part numbers that I ordered through Kartek

I like that little stud on the end to add support if needed.

K&n filters have been known to let a ton of dust by, I surprised people still run them.

I didn’t realize they were so bad! Never running oiled filter again. Eventually I’ll tab it and tie into that stud with a sheet metal guard under the filter to keep water out. Similar to this
