Crawler/Broverlander YJ Buildup

Got the transmission lines insulated and routed. The belly lines are the same as the Hydro-assist, so I only have to carry one spare.

Off to a bachelor party for the weekend. I hope to have this running next weekend.:jester: :lmao:

My brother bough a house, so I've been helping him move stuff and work around the house.

83.jpg

Sunday I got back in the shop and got the Transmission coolers and PS cooler mounted to the radiator. I really like how the Novak Radiator mounts. It has a steel mount with rubber bushings and its pinned in. Really easy to remove it.

88.jpg

I got the 9" rear end clearanced for the 10". I don't know what the difference is between Spidertrax housings, but this one went in pretty easy. Mainly Just opening up the face and light grinding on the path of the ring gear. Put the Carrier and gear in the housing and used some tire crayons to mark the high spots. I ran out of grinding wheels and the ADHD kicked in and I started bending tube for a Truck bed cage. :shaking:

I like that canopy over the door:smokin:
Thanks! Backstory, That building is entirely down hill and used to flood back before I moved in. (the reason nobody wanted it) My shop used to be behind that door and I put a berm up in front of the door to keep the water out, but it caused the rain off the roof to funnel directly down the berm and under the door. I found this out working on underneath something and put that pallet and 2x4 up with some leftover sheetmetal. Bonus points of cheapness. The chimney is held on with an 8' aluminum bedside cover.

Pretty productive weekend in the shop, I got the rest of the material removed to clear the 10”. If you plan on racing it, I’d order a larger housing, but since this is a bro-dozer :flipoff2: clearancing will be fine.

IMG_2276.jpeg

After that, I welded some 1/4” plate on the bottom, just in-case the mall parking lot has some tall curbs

IMG_2275.jpeg

Next, I got the gears setup on the Hi-10, I'm still fighting the arb main line, but it’s together with the upgraded 3rd pinion bearing.

IMG_2278.jpeg

Cut the axle shafts down to clear the locker center pin. And did some housekeeping.

Turns out another friend wanted to get into crawling, so he found a heep that needs a lot of things redone :shaking:, and I’ve been helping them try and get it ship shape for GER next month.

Not much of an update, but this thing officially turns liquid dinosaurs into noise. I found 4 leaks and overlooked them until after the fire up. :grinpimp:

Only thing that stumped me was the lack of fuel, but I had the supply and returns backwards.

Also, the belt came off after a few blips of the throttle, I think I need to get a longer belt.

IMG_2576.jpeg

Got the ARB tested out on the HI-10. Since I didn't get any control stuff for the ARB, I'm just going to use a valve and mount that to the center console.

89.jpg

The adapters came in and I needed to test them for science.

Parts delays will keep the hi10 out of the axle for now. I slapped the hi9 back in it with the new upgraded 3rd bearing. 40s back on

1 day til Good evening ranch. Let’s see what we can’t figure out

IMG_2699.jpeg

Took the day off, currently wrapping up the wiring and interior.

IMG_2704.jpeg

The buddies had a little delay, so we won’t roll out til Saturday morning. The 350 through a rod and they are frantically putting a spare in. Old motor was out at midnight last night.

Jesus. I admire the dedication.
Thanks, I was supposedly called out as having the most money tied up in a paperweight. Gotta love the club that calls me out the week before a big trip. I feel bad for the guys with the motor swap. They have a kids birthday party that’s going to be hosted at that garage this evening. Supposedly the new motor is in, with a high volume oil pump

Supposedly a lot more stuff is done on mine, but I won’t mention anything about it until tomorrow/sunday

Make sure they overfill the crankcase a bit, or at least watch the gauge like an hot chick eating a banana. Oil pumped up is oil not in the pan.

It’s a girl!!!

IMG_2710.jpeg

Man, these gender reveals are getting out of hand.
Bwahahahahahahaha!

Quite the assplosion there. :flipoff2:

Well this sure is a fail of the ages. The heep went together amazingly and didn’t put up too much of a fight. Got everything buttoned up at 10 this morning and on the trailer it went. It’s Having a bit of a transmission tuning issue, but I was gonna ride around the trails and try and tune it out.

image000000.jpeg

Loaded up the trucks and head to the gas station. Immediately notice that the f350 is down on power and developed a miss, :mad3: Injector #3 has left the chat.

Okay, we’ll go back to the shop, drop my jeep, big gooseneck, and f350 and take old reliable and the little car trailer. No problems here.

IMG_2711.jpeg

Problems here. 20 minutes out…. Trailer tire blows out, so we stop and fix it nascar style.
Pull back on the Interstate and the duramax is staying in limp mode, no matter what we do, it’s having injector related problems. Pull into the parking lot off the side of the road and the rear end in my truck is making noise. Rear axle seal has left the chat and it sounds crunchy. FAWk. We headed back to the house and called it a trip.

IMG_2715.jpeg

No wheeling this weekend, but it sure wasn’t for a lack of effort. I probably won’t post much on this thread for a while.

So, the original tuner moved out of state and I’ve been threatening him with a road trip 3 hours (one way to Baltimore) to get this stupid computer tuned, he didn’t upload the 4l80 map on the 5.3 computer, didn’t add the axle gears, or delete the evap stuff.. He says he’s busy and can’t get to it. Okay. I’ll find someone else. Called around and found a local guy who can tune it and he is 1.5 hours away. Talk to him and he can do it, he does all of his programming in the evenings. Great! I’ll pop over and get it done and drive back. Nope, I show up and he tells me that it will be ready tomorrow for pickup. So I drive home and come back the next day and pick it up.

TLDR Jeep runs and drives well. :flipoff2:

Wait, wut? Reported as a spammer because no one here actually wheels anymore.:flipoff2:
:flipoff2:

A small group of friends came out and wheeled this weekend. The green xj was open/open and kept up for a while! He got the doors later on!

I found a nice undercut and didn’t think much about it, but the long side axle didn’t like it too much. I was told that these are chromolies, but I think this is a re splined axle or the chromoly work hardened. You can just see the discoloration in the splines. They are extremely sharp in the middle of the splines and the end of the shaft looks like someone shortened it with a dull beaver. The breakage totally wasn’t my right foot, water in the stickie's, or a motor with actual power. Definitely not that. I'm impressed the HI9 held up to the abuse, I beat on it pretty hard to see what would let go first. I'll rip it apart this week to check out the new bearing.

Brown santa came by and delivered the f150 calipers and an Ibooster, so I'll play around with them this week.

That xj has seen it all. He drove it to community college, It had 300k on it, and it was rolled before it got the HP44/9" and 37 Sticky Treps. It's just been slowly work hardened by the rocks for the last 10 years or so. Up until this year, all 4 doors opened and closed.

Side note, temps never got above 215* with no fan shroud. Scaled with a Spare, water in the front, tools, and a cooler, The Black jeep was 2800lb front, 2200 Rear.

Nathanial beats that thing HARD.....i think it has RCV's? Its pretty wild where he takes that.

The splines being sharp and shiny in one spot makes me think the housing is bent and the shaft is working the side gear or locker splines as it rotates. Might check the splines in your locker, and toss a straight piece of tube in your empty axle housing for a quick look before reassembly.

Yep! He finally broke one at GER on Memorial Day. That rig gets no love and he’s not afraid to let people drive it either. He’s the one who got the cj3 in post #6

That sounds more like it. I was talking to the people who built this thing 20+ years ago, and we think this was a stock shaft that was cut down. It just never broke because it never made any power, and we put the water in the front.

The new Chromoly shafts are on back-order for 2 weeks, so I slapped this thing together to test the second computer. It's defiantly less power than the race tune, but a lot nicer to drive down the road. I took off for a nice road trip on saturday and visited some old friends way out in the sticks. I put roughly 150 miles on and got some interstate time in. Average MPG on screen was 13.2. I've never had a vehicle without a windshield go that fast. I'm still 99% sure that when it downshifts to 2nd, that the front tire lifts off the ground for a second or so. Pardon the "doing it for the gram" shot. I didn't take it. :flipoff2:

Okay, back on the build-up on this thing.

1. Dutchman got the new shafts made in less than a week. Turns out the PO cut the passenger side down, but no big deal. New Yukon Super joints to finish it all off. I'm glad to have spares now.

91.jpg

2. I need to finish the floor in this thing, but don't have any sheetmetal laying around. Poor barrel didn't see it coming.

3. Off to the races. Nevermind. I got passed by a dude and his Lambo-Feeties. :shaking:

Good Evening Ranch is one of the best parks on the east coast. IHMO. My buddy had already gotten a camper spot and they had been wheeling since Thursday. We wheeled Cripple creek Friday Evening and the jeep did amazing. No real issues and a really nice evening with new friends and swapping lies about other friends we knew. :smokin:

Woke up Saturday morning to Cooper B warming up the 427. MMMMMH that thing sounded good. Went over and talked to them for a bit and let them borrow the CO2 tank to pump the tires up. Nice folks. I listened in to the drivers meeting and walked the course to find a good spot to watch the downhill stuff. I might upload the vidoes later, but It was an awesome event, and Tim won the style points again. That man can drive.

95.jpg

After the first round and lunch, we drove down the trails and did Chadalac.

After that, Michelob light.

Finally, we where tooling around Snake den and I got stuck between a rock and a hard place (the same rock). I touched reverse and it split the body mounts off the frame. Whoops. It split the Cowl off the floor section and cut the lower radiator hose. I left enough hose on there to cut it shorter and wheel for a little bit longer. It cut again and I didn't bring a spare, I wrapped it in electrical tape and drove back to camp. It was getting late and I called it a day.

98.jpg

that last picture looks like a bad time
Tis but a scratch. It looks worse than it is. The Radiator didn't get hit, the wiring was all good, and it drove on the trailer under power. I'm pretty happy about it. I'll have to get a new body mount and redo the front end a little bit. I don't know what I'm gonna do about the floor line yet.

Also, I just watched the 2nd heat of the bouncers on the Utube. Turns out Cooper won this event and is now 1st in the Series! :bounce2:
