What's new

Why is littering so common? Someone help me understand.

Can't stand it. One good thing the Marine Corps instills is 'pack it in, pack it out'....sure, it's a pain in the ass to pack all your trash back into your backpacks and such. But once you're engrained with that mentality, it's hard not to think less of people that don't have it.

I hate smokers for this reason and I know most of you that smoke on here do that shit. No problem flicking those cig butts anywhere despite that it takes fucking forever to decompose....and they tend to pile up where all y'all nasty MF'ers congregate.

Sure, sure... "I don't do that!" :lmao:

99 out of 100 smokers I personally see flick them on the ground without a second thought.
Back when I was riding a bicycle for transport in college, every gutter at every stop light waqs full of butts where smokers just dumped out their ash trays

I learned my lesson on dumping shit in fields.

When I was in HS my mom gave me some cash to take a truck load of stuff to the dump, being a budding entrepreneur I figured I'd pocket the cash and dump the stuff in the local field that accumulated a bunch of shit. (I wouldn't do this now, I was a kid at the time)

It had rained the night before and I got my 2wd dakota stuck in the mud. My buddy and I tried for about an hour, shoving stuff under the tires etc. Finally had to break down and call Grandpa to bring out his 79 F-250 and drag me out. He was old school, his recovery gear was a chain, he about jerked my head off and shot my truck into the pile of shit I just dumped putting a long gouge in my cab.:homer::lmao: Of course word got back to mom and I caught hell about that for years:lmao: That's what we need more of, relentless shaming when you fuck up, rather than all this rehabilitation and forgiveness bullshit.
I had a dumbass friend in high school. He had a budding yard work service. He got busted dumping trash bags of lawn clippings because he threw out trash with his name on it. They tracked him down and gave him a fat ass ticket. :homer:

I see it all around Austin. Side roads lined with junk people dump. Fast food trash every where. It blows my mind people are willing to be so trashy.

In my area, I entirely blame the no ingles retards not knowing that the landfills in the counties they reside in are free. Pisses me off to no end.

Its everywhere...all over the world.
Now that those trails have become popular and campgrounds that cater to the sxs, they look like a fucking dump.
The sxs "messicans" are the worst offenders of all ohv. I've seen all different walks of life liter in one way or another.

Firm believer in pack it in and pack it out, I'll fully burn paper and other items that won't leave remnants in the camp fire to help with packing it out.

What’s laughable about this. I live on the border of the Navajo Nation. They are the litterers here. It’s a huge problem.
I see this as well. Also this is the NM state flower

Local BLM area around me is a dumping ground too. Not just the 100’s of homeless people who live on the outskirts but you’ll see tons of very obvious truck/trailer dump sites of yard debris, drywall leftovers, construction trash, appliances, everything. IMO the dumps around here charge way too much and maybe that’s part of it. I fill up an 8ft pickup box a few times a year of my own junk and it’s always around 20$ to dump. Then add on fees for used tires, and hazmat is also a PITA to get rid of.

Trash and people that feel the need to carve their fvcking name into stuff. Oh look at this beautiful historic site... I think I'm gonna carve me and memaw's initials into this 200 year old structure. That pisses me off more than litter. At least you can pick up litter...

Com on lets hear from the liter bugs. I know you fuckers are watching. Admit it.

I only throw banana peels and apple cores out the window in rural settings, and they make it to the weeds on the shoulder, and it's only once in a while. Last core I threw out the window was several weeks ago. Don't even remember the last time I pitched a banana peel. Ants gotta eat too! I hate it when I open the door and the wind blows a paper towel or receipt out. I try and get them back. Usually can. The funny thing is everyone that drives gets gas and gas stations always have trashcans- that are usually overflowing.

Wherever I go, I see litter. Trash, everywhere. It's deep in the deserts when I go wheeling. Offramps. Neighborhoods. Schools. Parks. People just leave their trash behind when there's a trash can no more than 50 feet away. And it's not just "them", as the hammers were absolutely wrecked with empty beer cans and refuse after KOH. I really, genuinely, do not understand why people litter. People don't pick up after their dogs. It's insanely irritating, and I need to understand why people do this.

I'll use a metaphor;
When I was looking/researching to move out of S.Cal. back in the mid-'90s I discovered, in general, the amount of crime in a given city is equally proportional to it's population size.

To your point;
There are more people in the U.S. today than there were 10 years ago/20 years ago/30 years ago/etc, etc.
I'll W.A.G. it looks like there's more litters but I think proportionally it's about the same percentage of people who litter.

Bottom line; it still sucks.

So if we banned SxS's from trails and KOH the litter would instantly stop? :lmao: What the fuck did you smoke this morning before typing that?

He's not entirely wrong (hear me out)

The SXS lends itself more to the newb that bought his way into the hobby and has little experience with the hobby. Therefore, there's a bigger ratio of DANs in the SXS crowd vs the buggy, jeep, trail rig groups. Each of these groups have DANs obviously... its just that the SXS has the highest ratio and also the highest overall numbers simply because the SXS outnumbers everything else.

This does not mean SXS's suck, or SXS riders are DANs, or trail rig/ buggy guys are somehow better. SXS is the jet ski of the woods. Jet skis are fun as hell. Some jet ski owners are great users of the wayerways... some are c-units.

Replace the word SxS with Jeep/Bronco and it's no different.

I must be that one smoker you dont see doing that because I don't EVER throw my butts on the ground or out the window. If I'm outside the head gets flicked off and the butt goes in my back pocket. While driving I always have a bottle or cup with a lid to dispose them in.

What about all the non cigarette butt litter? That's OK with you because a smoker didn't do it? You funny....

Looks like I struck a nerve, but points for the deflection and "whatabout-issm" :flipoff2:

Obviously I'm not OK with other types of litter. The fuck kind of question is that :homer:

Yes, but that’s the point I just made.

And it is different, because (at least not out west wheeling) there's about 10x the number of SXS out than Jeeps/Broncos. So if you have 100 sxs at Gilmer on a weekend, and 10 jeeps/broncos... then you have 80 DANs in SXS and maybe 5 DANs in the jeep/broncos.

Nothing wrong with SXS's. It's just numbers.

Opposite time-

When i was a kid (up until the mid-late 80's) everything in the rural area where i grew up was a dumping ground. All the backroads that had maybe an old unused driveway, open spot into the woods... literally anywhere you could back a truck in out of direct sight had junk. Not garbage like the McD's sack or coke bottles and beer cans... but actual junk. Old couches, mattresses, TV's, etc. etc. It was fucking everywhere. Funny thing is there was a dump 5 miles up the road that would take a truck bed full of anything for like $1.

Now it doesnt happen anymore. Ever. Anywhere.
There's a few spots on very rural gravel roads here that have been dumping spots for as long as I can remember. Appliances, furniture, animal carcasses, you name it. Every couple years there will be news articles about it and the DNR will try to get people to stop, but it never changes. It's pathetic.

I wonder how we got it to stop?

Even weirder.... it stopped around the same time the dump closed.

It didn't just stop in that area... it stopped everywhere around here 25mi radius at least. Sure there's car trash all down both sides of the road, but zero "dumping".

Boyfriend reminded me last night of our biggest fight to date, him throwing gum out the window of the vehicle. OMFG I have lost my shit. For some reason there are people that don't think used gum is littering.
My GF at the time chewed on me cause I threw out some gum. I now put it in a napkin in my door pocket to .......

The funny thing is everyone that drives gets gas and gas stations always have trashcans- that are usually overflowing.
....Usually throw it in this among everything else that accumulates. :homer:

I usually drive a little loop on the weekends and it looks like someone piled up coors light cans every 20 ft or so, usually 5 cans per pile on a stretch of road.

I'm soooo irritated with litter.
Last time I went to a bouncer race I started packing out shit from the ground.

Someone told me " Good on you for helping keeping the park clean". So I told him I had another trash bag if he wanted to help. All of a sudden he didn't care anymore.

Fuck litter bugs

I'm not hatng on all sxs/ owners, and I think 45acp nailed it. People suck in every sport and I know this conversion has been had multiple times here. The most common offenders I witness are tan in pigment and operating/riding in a sxs.

Also I'm known as being toyota trash, so it's nice to finally pass the torch. :flipoff2:

I saw a guy in a brand new Audi throw a cup out the window last week. :flipoff: I feel like a road killing should be acceptable punishment for the offense.

People are always quick to say how awful a "road rage shootings" is, but I ALWAYS gotta ask.... What did he do???? And if the guy who got shot was throwing a McDonalds cup out the window..... Maybe it's not as big of a deal. :homer:

Father-rapers sitting right there on the bench next to me! And they was mean and nasty and ugly and horrible crime-type guys sitting on the bench. And the meanest, ugliest, nastiest one, the meanest father-raper of them all, was coming over to me and he was mean and ugly and nasty and horrible and all kind of things. And he sat down next to me and said, "Kid...what did you get?"
I said, "I didn't get nothing, I had to pay fifty dollars and pick up the garbage."
He said, "What were you arrested for, kid?" and I said, "Littering."
And they all moved away from me on the bench there, and gave me the hairy eyeball and all kinds of mean nasty things, 'til I said, "And creating a nuisance," and they all came back, shook my hand, and we had a great time on the bench,

SWAG- You're really pale, shower once a week, keep your stomped down Keystone Light cans in an old Reebok duffle bag bungee corded through the handles to the cage, blasting Days Of The New through some Optimus 6x9's you got from your ex's brother.

:flipoff2:

I do think for purposes of discussion define littering.

I've known people go absolutely ballistic when something blows out of the back of your truck at highway speed (like a beer can or wrapper) and you don't immediately whip a shitty and get it.
I've known people who think you're the devil if you toss an apple core into the ditch
I've also known people who figure anything that's "biodegradable" (paper, cardboard, wood products) can be tossed wherever and it doesn't matter.
I've also known people who chuck everything they are done with out the window because they don't want it in 'their car.

I think I fall somewhere between my second and third scenario. I'm not killing myself to pick up a McDonald's napkin that flew out the window, and I'll toss all the apple cores and banana peels in the ditch.
However, purge my vehicle weekly of stuff that I pick up out of the road and off the side of the road that either constitutes a hazard or I've got time to pick up. I'll even pick up the piss jugs if I have one of the McDonalds napkins floating around the cab (won't do it bare-handed as I know enough truckers to have heard how they live their lives if they are true road dogs.)

I feel like that is a major part. You pay to purchase something, and you have to pay again to get rid of it. Why aren't people recycling TVs, tires, etc? Because you have to pay to dispose of it, and it's easier to just dump it in the trash/woods/gravel pit.
