When do you call it quits on a vehicle?

Considering most of the folks on here have rigs that they're put 5 times what the rig could sell for into their junk, this may not be the best group to ask.:flipoff2:

A project/toy is not the same as a daily in terms of how much fuckery is permittable.

I have one vehicle model that I know inside and out, I have parts, and know how to work on them
That being said. I buy them for 500.00 fix them and run them for another 75,000 miles, then send the smoking hulk down the road for the same 500.00 after I strip everything out of it

What is it?

I generally start looking for a replacement vehicle when a gas powered vehicle hits 200k miles and a diesel vehicle hits 300k miles. By that point, a transmission or engine replacement becomes more likely and would likely mechanically total the vehicle. So I might as well sell it while it is functioning and buy a replacement lower mileage vehicle.

I currently only have one vehicle in my fleet that is nearing the above mileage limits that I would spend the money to put a replacement drivetrain component in, and that is only because it has sentimental value. Everything else either gets sold or put in shitbox reserve where I quit spending money to repair anything beyond basic maintenance items.
I've never gotten more than 100k on a Domestic Automatic transmission... my 2004 gmc is on its 3rd.

The

(Toyota being the outlier and my Acura MDX almost made 200k before the trans went out, and I essentially just gave it away to a kid that was interested in it. )

im a 6.0 powerstroke owner, dont ask me :flipoff2:

part of my reasoning is well if i sold this what else would i buy? if i would buy the same thing or similar then im better off dumping money into the one that i have

at least i know whats good and bad on it

I suppose I've been very fortunate in that regard. Either I buy them after the trans has already been replaced, or I sell them before they become a problem. Knock on wood.

I like to leave em out front and pick parts off them with zero dignity:flipoff2:
If I had something like my dad's old bike I would fix it and put it up.

I may have a differnt view than most. I don’t drive boring vehicles. I never have. I spend too much time in them to drive something I don’t like. Keeping a vehicle is always cheaper than buying new. As far as current value, that doesn’t matter since I’m not selling. I don’t change vehicles very much.

To answer the question, I’ve only quit on 4 vehicles.

1. A Jaguar XKE that I totaled. Couldn’t find one I liked to replace it.
2. A Scout II that was replaced with a Full size Bronco. (It was better suited to my needs)
3. The Bronco rusted to shit in Canada. Replaced with a Bronco from New Mexico. (Parts moved over)
4. A Volkswagen Beetle that was replaced with a Delorean. (Better suited my needs)

The rusted Bronco is really the only one I “quit on”. (Canadian salt) But lots of stuff lives on the new one.

I will probably die with the HEMTT, Delorean and the Bronco.

Rust makes it easy to send to slaughter. I don't know how you guys in the desert states don't just keep dropping drivetrains in the same vehicle your whole life.

Buy a Range Rover... Spend $7k on parts and maintenance so you can make it "reliable" as your DD. :homer: Blow motor up shortly thereafter. Then you'll know when it's time.

Or... unzip pants, pull scrote out, open car door, slam scrote in car door, rinse and repeat until thought of ever buying another GD British anything leaves your head. Either way...

Don't be lame :flipoff2:

A project/toy vehicle it's perfectly fine to spend 10x it's value on fuckery....something daily driven just for A to B, it's stupid to sink more than it's value into modding it or even keeping it going. Different vehicles, different purposes.

And nobody says you can't daily drive your toy, it's just at that point it is a toy.

A unicorn, nothing out there for $500 that can travel additional 75k without a decent sweat equity/monetary investment...

Hmm, I could see late 90s fwd v6 gm cars fitting that, chevy cavalier, 90s explorer, maybe 2wd suburban, crown vics before the truck body swap craze, stuff like that. Probably not 500 on today's open market, but from door knocking or knowing a guy

I think a lot depends on who is driving said vehicle. I just sold off my wife's Jeep for a Bronco. Yes, the Jeep worked just fine. I just put a new front end (steering components) under it. Got rid of death wobble and drives great. But little things kept happening. A brake light (not the tail light) was out and some cop gave her grief over that one night. The factory zip ties let go and the radiator hose melted through on the exhaust manifold so it had a leak. Thankfully I was driving and Jerry Rigged it until I could get it a fix for it. She would have been stuck dead. The battery has some corrosion and has been giving her a hard time starting. Someone else drove her home until I could get out there and fix it. It just wasn't worth having to have her stranded until I could come and fix whatever minor problem it had. So a newer vehicle made sense to me.

I personally drive a truck w/330k on the clock and daily drive it everywhere with no worries. I can fix whatever goes wrong for the most part and enjoy driving it. And for whatever reason, the little teeny bopper girls love this stupid old truck. But I do keep it clean for it's age.

PJ,

How many of those cars are left without a crap ton of miles/being plain worn out.
Parts availability is not the greatest anymore.

Same goes for older Toyotas, Fords with straight six engine etc.

Fact still remains, if one purchases $500 vehicle it will need a serious baseline to keep it worthy of piling on 75k additional miles.

I have a 2005 impreza wagon as a grocery getter and for my 16yo son to learn stick, and drive to school. Bought it for $2k, head gaskets done in the last 10k miles, new clutch in the back seat for when he smokes the one in it.
Well, after only 3 months, my son decided to drive it over a curb at a moderate rate of speed, and he was too embarrassed/panicked to stop so he drove it 1/4mile causing more damage. Dented and leaking oil pan, needs front struts, drivers side control arm is bent bad, needs front wheel bearings, and both front wheels are damaged. Will need an alignment.

Total to fix everything wrong would be $650ish with some used cheap wheels/tires. I don't think I'd be able to get $2650 for it all fixed up, but it might be close. I do know that it is a somewhat reliable car, and I won't be able to get another somewhat reliable car for $650+"whatever I could sell it for as-is".

My son has shown no interest in fixing his fuckup, so I think I'm going to fix it and sell it, or keep it to keep miles off the nicer vehicles. My son will need to buy his next vehicle.

I know all the issues with this car. If I were to give up on it and buy a new beater, it would come with new beater problems that would need to be fixed anyway.
"The devil you know is better than the one you don't"

No shit:laughing: Still snag a rig for $500-$1k toss another $500-$1k at it. And have a halfway decent beater rig

Listen here fawker, a Walmart MTB is $500:flipoff2:

What we are talking about here is sustaining high mileage vehicle additional 75k miles. It will certainly cost more than $500 acquisition fee.

Now get back to mangling Ujoints:flipoff2::flipoff2:

Put a better cooler on them.

Going to guess you rarely drive in the snow and freezing temps. 200+° trans temps are normal?

I had an 03 with a stock 4l65e go 250k, and my 16 6l90e went 315k.
They rarely get over 180°, 6 months a year I'm rarely hitting 150° cruising down the highway for hours.

Never hurts to get them rebuilt by someone that puts the sonax or transgo fixes in either. A brand new stock unit will likely fail in the same way the original did.

I've noticed us northerners get about twice the mileage out of GM transmissions even back to the 700R4 days. :flipoff2:

Bought my son a Saab something or other turbo..

After a month it ate a turbo.
Cost almost as much for the turbo as the whole car. ($3500 for the turbo)
Radiator leaked, new radiator, I forget how much. Did that myself, but you can't believe all the shit that had to come off that car to replace the radiator because the upper support doesn't just unbolt from the car.
New alternator, tried fix that myself, but special tools required.
Finally sold it after that.

My Ex bought my middle kid a Volvo 850 wagon, in Arizona. No problem until she moved up to Colorado. Apparently the heater core leaked, so they just removed it. Pain in the ass source all the parts to fix that.
Wouldn't pass smog. Fixed several issues (EGR, Plugs etc) still no go. Wiring to the O2 sensor was bad apparently. But I also think crappy after market Cat converter was worn out.
I had to sell that car before I spent any more on it. Was a cheap car, but I liked it, and could see the bills growing.

Her next car was a Subaru.
New (Rebuilt) engine and trans. Thread about it on the old board.
In fact, she talked about moving to Canada.
I warned her there was a deal set for her hand over getting her a boyfriend/husbnd who could work on her car.
I never got the payment, but the deal was made. LOL

yet when it comes to selling they want 5x the parts cost :shaking::shaking::shaking:
