What's new

what to do in your state for fun

Should see NYC once. Not like normal tourist stuff but just wander around all day looking at buildings, bridges, subways, and crazy people. Hot dog cart and pizza. Random bar in some back alley. Construction site with some of the biggest steel you'll ever see. (Not much going on currently) Intrepid is cool. Museum of natural history.

Upstate has some nice parks, lakes, rivers and land that makes it such a shame the place is poisoned.
I'll chuck into this pot.....

Nathans
Coney island
Jewish deli
Upstate bfe
Both beaches
The hole in the (ground zero)
Gun free zone

White Mountain National Forest has a bunch of good hikes and other family fun stuff around there. Hiking Franconia Ridge is doable in a day and is mostly above tree line so great views. Can hike, drive or ride a train to the top of Mount Washington but that gets $$$.

There's also the ocean if you're into that sort of thing.

Drive endless logging roads, depending on season-salmon fishing up river or on ocean. Steelhead fishing. Camp on beach. Eastern side of state shoot ground squirrels, hunting is huge statewide. Hundreds of miles of sand dunes to ride, many rental places starting Coos Bay and north. Many waterfalls to hike to. Outdoor recreation is everywhere in Oregon. Eastern side is completely different geography, lots of volcanic terrain to explore. Watch out for rattlesnakes east of the cascades.

I'll guess that's worse than these swarms.

Do cicadas cause accidents and shut down freeways?
 not that I’m aware of but they are crazy eyed looking.

Jones and I forgot the name of #2. Family is from there ( zoo york and L.I.) and no not lit.

:flipoff2:
Geeze guess I could have said.

I posit that one could place up for consideration the following items of visual exuberance....:flipoff2:

We go to the mountains, we go to the ocean where the waves crash into rocks. We can do it all the time nice and easy.
Those were the two things I don't think I could do in Texas or Florida. It's probably why I stay in CA.

Syracuse has a bunch of canal museums and the green lakes. The Adirondacks has a ton of hiking and free camping. There's also a bunch of boating stuff around the great lakes and fishing.

Nevada has a desert? Must be below 8,000 ft.

Hike/trail run. Fishing. Horse watching.
Mountain biking with some sweet jumps. Motocross tracks.
Float the river for hours.
Paint or visit museums. I think the State museum includes a tour of where they printed money back in the day.
Local AAA baseball team is really good.
Rodeo comes to town every year.
Decent amount of rock crawling. Fordyce isn’t far. Rubicon isn’t far. Moon rocks isn’t far.
Endless amounts of off road exploring.
old mining locations. Active mining locations.
Pony Express Trail. The 40 Mile Desert. Petroglyphs. Lots of historical places to visit. Valley of Fire state park.
Go check out Fly Geyser (owned by BM people I think)
Indoor rock climbing. Outdoor driving range where you hit balls into water with random targets. For a while they had a geo metro to hit.
Bowling. I think the national bowling league comes to town every year.
Rock hounding. Apparently geologists like this state.
Skiing. Not water and snow.
Critter hunting. Tarantulas. Scorpions maybe. Praying mantis. Butterflies.
photography. It sounds dumb but you could start taking pictures of wild animals, buildings, artwork, stars, a few street performers, nature, and not even have to leave the big city.

Visiting California is cool if you’re into crowded spaces with rules no one cares about. Casinos have some good restaurants if you want to watch Californians gamble and talk about no state taxes. They have some concerts from performers way past their prime.
Farmer’s (daughter) markets can be cool.
Hot August Nights (meh) Street Vibrations (meh), Vegas to Reno race (meh),

So stay away. Don’t tell your friends about this place. All you do is stay inside. It’s too crowded with Californians including me. It’s desert, casinos, and Californians. At least the 100F temps are a dry heat. DO NOT bring your kids either. Everyone here stays inside and plays video games until they’re old enough to hang out at dive bars.

Rent a vrbo on a lake in northern Wisconsin or the UP. Take a sxs on the endless trails and enjoy the forests. Rent a boat for a couple days and fish the lakes.

If the kids like camping and hiking, check out the driftless area in the NE corner of Iowa.

For just relaxing, Gulf Shores was one of my favorite vacations. There's plenty to do other than just sit on the beach too.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has lots to see along both Lake Michigan and Lake Superior shorelines. No big cities. Waterfalls, sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, early settler forts, Mackinaw Bridge, Soo Locks, porcupine Mountains (not mountains but beautiful) copper mines and small towns. You can easily spend a week or two.

The flume and the gorge are ones we always seem to do with the kids.

Theres no good ocean beach in NH, gotta go to ME for that.

So good beach to you means rocky shithole, got it. :flipoff2:
Wells, York, and even Ogunquit are nice. But if you drop your wallet in Ogunquit you gotta kick it to Wells.

I'd take rocky shithole over Hampton any day :flipoff2:

Yall got cheap lobsters though. And a ton of swap meets. I'll be going back up next spring for another one.

VA has a ton of free stuff to do. Cave diving, Kayaking, Swimming, Forest Roads, Camping, Haunted bonfires, abandoned insane asylums, and there is Civil war stuff everywhere.

Says the guy who runs for fun. :flipoff2:
lol I don’t run for fun I run so I can build a gas tank for my boxing. It is no fun when you get tired and have a hard time holding your hands up.

It’s how I got my current 2 black eyes :lmao:. Last round sparring last Friday paired up with the pro in the gym. Everyone else was hiding from him cause they were tired :homer:.

Last minute of the round he caught me dropping my back hand after throwing a cross and he responded with a beautiful cross himself to the bridge of my nose. 100% my fault for getting tired and careless after 15 rounds of sparring.

So you don't run for fun....you get punched in the face for fun. Got it :flipoff2:

Go down to Seattle and whack tweakers with a 2X4.

About the only thing people do around here is is massive amount of drinking:lmao:
Only people I've known from Wisconsin were rugby affiliated, so they drank a lot, and apparently they were lightweights when they were back home....:flipoff2:

Washington State has everything, as other people have already said. But the one really cool thing you could do on a vacation would be to come out and dig razor clams on the beach. It's about the easiest and highest yield foraging activity you can do and they are delicious. :smokin:
