What's new

Week in Moab

95 degrees Moab is like 80 anywhere in the south. You're in one of the most shockingly beautiful places in the US and it feels like 80 degrees. Quit your yankee ass bitching and go have fun.

:flipoff2:

It definitely does not feel like 80.

I’ll never make a comment to desert dwellers again about “dry heat.” It’s still HOT.

Now, 95-98 here with wind feels really good. In Moab there’s almost no wind so it’s just stale hot. Ken’s Lake it felt great with the breeze blowing.

Sitting in the 4Runner with the sun cooking you through the windshield is rough. I don’t know how some of these Jeeps are out here with no top. Unless they’re not off roading and just cruising faster paced roads.

If I could get my family up and moving and on the trails at 7am I could see way more. But that’s not happening.

We were out there for Labor Day week in 2017. it was over 100 everyday. It may be a dry heat but it felt like 130 out on the rocks. Tried to get our friends that we were with to get up at 4 and ride from 6 to noon then go back to camp to lay up in the shade during the heat of the day. "we are on vacation we aren't getting up that early". Well then don't bitch about the heat! :homer:

We ended up riding 'til about noon in the valley then going up into the LaSalle's in the afternoon. 100+ in the valley and 65-70 and hoodie weather on the mountain. :smokin:

I’m up right now outside at 6:41 and it’s perfect. Morning wheeling and then heading into higher elevation is the only answer. 130 is a perfect explanation of this place from noon to like 6 in the afternoon.

Yesterday I noticed right around 6,000’ it started cooling down. So we’re hitting Onion Creek today and then going swimming. I’ll be that non-resident out there swimming with a long sleeve shirt on and a hat. :flipoff2:

Onion Creek is a good trail for running in your daily. probably 30 creek crossings. I probably woudlnt get in the water though.

I see the weather is predicting 107 today. So might just run that, then head up Geyser Pass into the mountains for the day.

Fridayis the coolest day, so we’re heading down into Canyonlands to hit Elephant Hill. Only way I’m going to hit Fins n Things is if I do it alone early in the am.

"Do not hit moab in the summer." Got it. :flipoff2:

We've done a few trips there around this time of the year. Best answer for us is out of the house by 630 with everything prepped (snacks, lunches, coolers) the night before. We'd get back to the condo/house whatever by around 1 then hang out with beverages planning for the next day. Kids are happy to get off the trail with enough time to play, adults can take a nap and leaves time to do a once over on the rigs before the next day.

JFC "not even a breeze". Shit man, yalls clothes ain't even wet! :flipoff2:

You'll like Elephant Hill, it's pretty cool. From what I remember it's got one steep-ish climb that's alot easier than it looks and the rest is gravy. I'm gonna have to dig out my Moab pics disc and do some reminiscing now.

We did discover that if you soak your self down with a spray bottle of water it feels fantastic out here.

I’m not even sweating, which would really help, but I can’t drink enough water here.

We already explored that area for 7 days. Very nice, but those trails are swamped with people in the summer. It’ll be nice being somewhere no one goes to in the summer because it’s too cold, like Breckenridge.

Also, Route 50 has a huge detour right now so traversing from mountain to mountain is not easy. We’ll hit 70 to Silverthorne and drop into Breckenridge. 4 hours from here.
I suspect Breck will be busy AF also, but the temps will be much more tolerable.

Moab isn’t busy at all. Breckenridge seems like a ski town. There were also a lot of VRBO’s available.

Anybody know where to get passes for Fins n Things and Elephant Hill? Utah state said licensed vehicles don’t need OHV permits?

Make a run down to "Hotel Rock"....Fun trail, and higher elevation. ..I have never done "Elephant Hill"... Maybe this falll when it cools down a bit. Onion Creek is a blast...:smokin::smokin::smokin::smokin:

I don't know Elephant Hill. You pay at the gate for Fins and Hells.

Tomorrow is the last day here to explore. After seeing the wind caves off Chicken Corners I kind of want to hit Dome Plateau for the arch, caves, and old cabins. The kids like seeing that stuff.

The Blue Pig was awful when we were tehre.. service was mediocre. drinks were good but kinda pricey. the burnt ends were inedible. like they were in the steam cabinet all weekend. greasy, chewy, and gross. fries were half cold and greasy and the baked beans were way overcooked and dry. Wife said her pulled pork was good. Second time we have been there and the food was bad..

There were also like 8 customers, so they weren’t busy. :flipoff2: Or they just don’t like you.

This place is so dead it’s ridiculous. Saw the most people I’ve seen all week on the trails today…so like 15.
