What's new

Week in Moab

Milts Stop and Eat has great burgers including Bison, and awesome milkshakes.

We did cliffhanger...er half of it in a pouring rainstorm. Our resident Raptor pilot said he was less scared with SAM's being shot at him.

Back in 2010 Trav and I took the old 4405 car to EJS.

Ended up "wheeling" Golden Spike and Poison Spider with JR at like 1am.

Wheeling in quotes because it turned more into a "bombing at KOH speeds all over the place"

We stopped after a while to kind of find our bearings in the darkness as JR wheeled some crazy obstacle in the Fat City Bronco working his rear steer...and I happened to look to the right.....

And saw the 1,000 foot + (Or whatever it is) drop off to the river.

Let's just say that we slowed our roll after that. :homer:

Here's JR launching the Bronco earlier that day when we were wheeling Hells Revenge with him and Loren. It is one of may favorite wheeling pics of all time.

Will that take me through no left turn? The wife will murder me if I do that. She's not afraid of heights... unless she's stuck in a jeep with me. :grinpimp:

EDIT: On second thought- that route looks cool enough that I can probably get her to suck it up for a minute or two while we run through that.
That won't take you through No Left Turn unless you dive off and go on Rusty Nail. Going that way you'd be going up No Left Turn.

Milts has good food, but he is an anti OHV-er

I'm usually not scared of heights, but fawk everything about the Cliffhanger part of Cliffhanger. I noped right out of there.

How is he anti OHV? We pulled up in our crawlers with no grief. This was 2010 or so.

Utah is 5% tap.beer or grocery store beer unless you buy it canned or bottled from the brewery or liquor store. :flipoff2:

I really liked the Elephant Hill trail and seeing the confluence of the Green/Colorado rivers. I think you need a permit to do it and it was basically an all day side trip out of town.

Not sure if Milt's has changed owners... Had a burger there last weekend, and it was better than it has been in a long time. Not super greasy like before.
Thread hijack. I'll be out there with the family the first week of April. We'll be wheeling 1 or 2 days while there.
Solo stretched YJ on tons, 40s, atlas, winch, etc. Been wheeling for over 25 years. Looking for low drama trails to take the wife and kids. Don't care about wrinkling up the body, but I also don't want to be doing trailside repairs while my wife taps her foot.

After reading this I was thinking:

Hells Revenge
Posion Spyder
Maybe Fins n Things(or too boring?)

Close to town and shorter loops are better in case the family gets bored and wants to go ride.
Hells is a decent trail, not really challenging, but scenery and terrain is cool. Fins is fun in the dark, but kinda boring.
Hell's and Fins are loops just a couple miles from town.
If you haven't been before, I would hit the "trifecta" or whatever they call it. Poison Spider, Gold Bar, Spike. It's a long day, but has some good obstacles. If you don't have all day, run PS in to where Eagles Dare and turn around.

In the SxS we run PS to Golden Spike up to the Golden Crack then double back. Then the following day run Gold Bar Rim down to the Crack.
Since you're street legal you can run the entire trail south to north and come out on Gemini Bridges trail and take that back to 191

Got one more dumb question- anyone know of a good place to park their empty trailer for a week in Moab?

I don't mind paying for some sort of short term storage, or just leaving it when a hitch lock in a lot no one cares about. We're staying at a hotel that upon first glance in google maps doesn't appear to have a lot of room.

Which hotel? My buddy just stayed at the Homewood suites and they let him keep his truck and trailer in the covered parking. Most hotels have an area to park

Ok, last dumb question before we leave for Moab tomorrow, I swear:

Grandma has offered to watch the kids a few nights. What's everyone's favorite place in town to grab some food and margaritas? Emphasis on the margaritas. :flipoff2:

Elephant hill is cool! It's definitely way the hell out there but it's a cool ride!

I’ll date myself I think it was 1984 when I wheeled over elephant hill my first time 85 was the last time.
We camped in a place called the devils kitchen or devils campground or something like that.

It’s a nice mixed ride, a little rock, a little blow sand

Grandpa’s Garage usually has some space. Worth calling Danny to ask.
Danny is a great guy😎 we stayed at his place during EJS and the XRRA race a long fuckin time ago. If there’s a kid sized T Shirt on the wall that says something about grandpas garage, I found that at a Cracker barrel in AZ I think

So, our week has come and gone. Did some awesome wheeling, realistically could have done even more but had a great time any way.

Day 1: 1st half of Fins and Things (buddy broke a 1480 U Joint in 2wd (spooled front) 250' into the trail lol. Did Hells Revenge, exiting out through Tip Over Challenge. I attempted Escalator but backed out once the Jeep was smoking due to PCV sucking oil. We didn't make a run at Hells Gate due to there being literally noone else around the area, and just having 2 rigs and my buddies 7 year old with us. Would have been more comfortable with 1 more rig to keep up top if shit went South. Plan was to come back later in the week and run everything again, but we didnt make it back.

Day 2: Poison Spider Mesa - Golden Spike - Gold Bar Rim. This was a long day. We hit the trail at 10 till noon (looked at dinosaur tracks/petroglyphs etc. in area first). By the time we were done, and out off the Gemini Bridges road it was 10:30 that night. Did all of Gold Bar in the dark, i had to winch on the Gold bar waterfall due to piss poor lighting, and not being fully committed to the trail that day (got a text 3 hours in that my mom had been transported via ambulance to the ER and no consistant cell signal for hours to come to get any updates). Overall, the trail was awesome though. We did not do Where Eagles Dare or Rusty Nail, but did do the entire PS loop, Skyline, and everything else. Again, buddy broke a U joint on the other side, but this time we heard it and caught it before trashing the shafts, or so we thought. These are Richmond replacement shafts for 99-04 SD D60 with their Excel U joints already installed. Caps are loose in the bore, and just plain weak. Would not recommend the shafts or joints to anyone.

Day 3: After a long day on day 2, we did all of Fins and Things, while not difficult at all, it is a cool trail for sure. Spent the rest of the day at some shops in town with the 7 year old, and restocking on groceries. Gave everything a good once over that evening as well on the rigs.

Day 4: Steel Bender. This was a pretty damn fun trail as well, We didn't do a blistering pace, but did everything on the trail. Buddy heard a pop on the front end of his rig, didn't see anything obvious so we continued. Turns out he had broken a locking hub which we noticed at the end of the day. Were able to address that one at the house that evening so no biggie. My tie rod loosened up on me (continuous battle due to offset TRE's), noticed it quick and snugged it up but it did cause my ram to move and allowed one of the 90's to get hit and overbent. No issue on the trail at all. Back at the house I was getting it set back exactly where I wanted, tried to bend the 90 back and ended up cracking it. This ruined us getting anything else in that afternoon as I had to get a hose made (I had spares, but the 90's I had on hand were -4 and not -6 oops...)

Day 5: Kane Creek Canyon. Another badass trail, come to find out though we were running it backwards.. OnXoffroad shows the Trail head off 191, when in fact that is actually the end of the trail. That being said we went down Hamburger Hill versus up it. This was still a technical dropoff, I needed a winch on the back to keep me stable, it was VERY SKETCHY for a few minutes teetering on driver front and passenger rear only.. Buddy was able to drop off a little easier on same line, but slightly more stable due to having just a little more flex and keeping 4 tires on the ground at all times. A spotter would have probably helped me a bit as well. Everything else was pretty mild, but a cool trail nonetheless. Did a little body damage on this one as well, crushing in my driverside rocker. My modified Shittybilt "Rubirail" wasn't up to the task. After wrapping up here, we were going to run up to Chicken Corners, and try to sneak a peak at the Potash ponds, a few miles up the road my buddy got a battery indicator light due to alternator crapping out. We turned around and he was able to make it back across town to our townhome and we got it replaced that evening.

Day 6: Flat iron Mesa. This was was better than expected as well, not crazy by any means, but does have a couple optional climbs that are not exactly a cakewalk. Also a nice tight 90+ degree turn on a cliffedge with less than 4' of extra room to the dropoff. Enjoyed this trail as well, and it had a great mix of terrain throughout.

Overall, had a blast, like mentioned we could have easily squeezed in at least 2 more trails. Already planning the next trip back for either later this year, or early next year.

Tell your buddy that broke on fins an things he's officially the first person to ever have a drivetrain failure on that trail. I ran it following a guy in a 96 Honda accord on 33's and he never had a problem.

:flipoff2:
LMAO. This was definitely a crappy parts problem for sure. He heard a pop, let me know and I got out to listen. Had him put it in reverse to roll back so I could look at things and the cap came flying out lol. Originally thought it may have lost a clip, but when the second one went and we got it torn apart quicker we found the piss poor fit of the joint in the bore, cracked cap, and all clips present. I'd rate those Richmond shafts/joints right there with Moog U joints now as complete junk.

I can’t imagine a spooled front there and I loved mine on 39 reds and spool…. But never took it to Moab. Just drove all access trails in front wheel so I could turn. The rear tires scream when turning when locked, grip!

Nah, we call it Fins the Destroyer. For such a stupid easy trail, it seems there's always one person in every group that totally destroys something there.
