"Warning! Austin defunded police. Enter at your own risk!"

Meh............. All federal, state and local budgets could be trimmed by 30% and we would continue to be fine, actually probably better as a nation.

the biggest issue I have is that it results in unfunded mandates, the laws remain on the books and this can ONLY (well proven in history) lead to sporadic enforcement, which is the worst and most bigoted kind of enforcement, and degrades public trust. I strongly agree that this country could save substantial enforcement budgets, but it must be done from the stance of removing the laws. End the war on drugs and end gun control and watch just how quickly police shrink and nonsense justifications for detaining people drops

Other than the claim that the budget was cut 30% there is a whole lot of stupid shit and emotional childish comments in this thread :laughing::laughing:

The example given was Denver where the redirected money went to social services applied to 911 calls. This enabled social people to respond and try to mediate non- life threatening emergencies or calls. It is pretty common knowledge that social calls can be the most dangerous for police. The perps are wound up really tight. Think intoxocated dads with child custody type shit. Ready to die. Temporary insanity is a legit diagnosis. In these cases, a qualified trained social worker MAY be far better and effective some bumbling 2-bit doughnut eater all trigger happy ready to blast, and mag dump through a gypsum wall board into a room where they cant see what or who they are killing. Coming in full SWAT and armored car, AR-15 and door ram. If you dont like that or agree with me on that tough shit. :flipoff2: Part of a redirect COULD be a great thing. Not saying DEFUND the cops. Not saying I agree with or have all the facts. Just pointing out, {gary}-esque, how reactionary and thoughtless some of us respond.

If you were into conspiracy theories, you'd believe that the Cop Unions would believe that eventually, on certain calls, they will be deprecated and take orders from a granola-munching Therapist.

Which is exactly what I think should happen. And if that happens, then how much less revenue do Cop Unions get?

In fact, you could believe that the Unions being behind female cops would be a way to head-off a Social Worker involvement, because they claim that women talk down situations (I see mostly the opposite, female cops suck at de-escalation and tend to overcompensate), and female cops still pay Union dues.

As many here have pointed out when this all began, it's the Unions.

Do you think an armed escort for the social worker is a good idea? If a social worker has any authority and is unarmed do you think that a person is not going to harm that individual? I am open minded about your scenerio but at the same time I see the "temp insanity" issue stepping into the fray here. You often hear about the times fire and EMS crews waiting to go in for backup, I feel like the same would be needed in this situation, the first time a social worker is taken hostage or killed will be the end of this program.

I understand completely... I’ll do my best to stick to the rules

I’m guessing collecting the right thumb and picture ID (if available) for a proper identification of the perpetrator is standard procedure ?

Yes but you have to keep them on you at all times till weigh in. No stashing them in the bushes and shit like that.

They'll just "train" some officers and have them become licensed social workers. No need for anyone else to come in now. Just send the social worker with a badge & gun.

I like this idea but paramedics and firefighters aren’t allowed anywhere even slightly risky until cops have cleared the scene. How does this work with social workers? I am fine with calling them expendable but others may not be.

If you look at the reallocation of the funding from the chief this is going to have the opposite effect on your everyday citizen on the street. He gutted the DWI units, sent back to patrol ( that unit had something like 40% of DWI arrest last year). He also removed a large portion of the Organized Crime Division, you know the guys pulling northbound meth, and southbound cash out of the hands of cartels, working human trafficking cases... The parks unit (the guys dealing with the invasive transient population) are gone as well. That's just the highlights, there are more far reaching effects that will be felt for a while.

The reason that all this is happening is the removal of the funding for the academy classes. Cops are still gonna quit and retire, and now there's no way to back fill them till late 2021 (at best). The only way they can keep patrol shifts staffed is to pull guys out of specialized units, and have them hump DV calls, and respond to Karen's loosing their shit over their "right" to not were a mask.

Will that change anything from the looters standpoint? The Lancaster shooting was an individual with a knife that ran at the police when he first saw them, before the officer had a chance to even say "Hi,". If the officer had social skills or not didn't play a part but that didn't matter, stores have to be looted and burned.

honestly, maybe we don't need cops to patrol the roads and highways looking for reasons to pull people over? dumb ass laws like loud exhaust and license plate light bullshit need to be repealed. that would give departments enough staff to cover the major shit like organized crime and gang units imo.
