Turned it around and got the winch mounted up. Favorite way to clean the shop is to actually install some parts and get em off the floor. Have some cracks to chase out up here and I'm gonna beef up the bumper mounts a bit.

I'm not planning on anything elaborate, just a few pieces of angle iron to stiffen the firewall, just curious how it works out for yours, so far I've left the pedals on all of my CJs more or less a factory style going through the floor instead of the firewall, this will be the first one with a hanging pedal.

Stitched up a couple cracks, added some gussets on the bumper mounts and gave it a good old fashioned aerosol restoration. I might chop the top of the which plate out since my fairlead obviously isn't going way back there.

Set the bumper back on so I can start figuring out fairlead mounting. As much as I wanted to just bolt it right on the bumper and be done, the winch ended up too high for that. Will have to set up above it slightly and I'm probably going to end up frenching it into the bumper so it's not the first thing finding obstacles.

Wilwood clutch slave showed up late last night so I installed that after dinner. It's a little shorter than the Speedway one so I had to drill an extra hole in my bracket but after adjusting the free-play in the system and bleeding it I've got a functioning clutch again, and it's not a bear to push like the old shit was. Fucked around with a pry-bar and unstuck the headlight switch, those somehow still function and even the dimmer switch is okay. Didn't trust the mangled switch to not burn the shop down so I did swap in a replacement.

Hooked the battery up tonight and the heater fan kicked on when I turned the key so I guess this thing is self healing now? I thought the old man disconnected most of the body wiring when he got it running last. It's still gonna get a full re-wire soon-ish since it's all pretty haggard but signs of life are always nice.

One redeeming thing about running a carb is you can plumb the whole fuel system in less than a hour. Hard line instead of front to back rubber hose and I moved the filter up where its a little nicer to get at. Someday this thing will probably get a 1 barrel sniper and a fuel cell but it ain't gonna happen today.

I like that the tie-in wraps over the top of the frame. no idea if that makes it stronger or not, but I bet it made it easy to hold in place :D

Pulled the windshield off, small but easy weight loss, better visibility and the glass is hammered from many years of accidental grinder spark blasts. Bought a tube bender and wasted the little bit of tubing I had left attempting to make tie ins for the B pillar hoop. Will try again in a few days and hopefully suck less.

Put the exhaust back on, barely clears the cage now but barely clearing is still clearance.

Ruined a seal assembling the box so that's holding me up but I did get it cleaned up and painted. These oil radiator heaters are awesome for getting a casting up to temp.

I double sheared the pitman arm while I have it out. I didn't think it was needed but my buddy that's built and broken way more shit than me was looking at this thing a while back and heavily recommended it. Fun fact, that pitman is home made out of a chunk of plate with the ends from a production arm welded in.

Has not been a busy week around here but the steering box got built and reinstalled.

Turned my attention to the rear today. Low hanging, leaking fuel tank out first.

Small amount of debris between the tank and skid...

Knocked the existing shackle hangers off, looking to get rid of the stink bug stance. This is where the leaf ended up at the ride height I want, just gotta figure out how to mount it there.

I considered it before I started cutting. I think I can go up just a hair and put a shackle tube through the frame. The trails around here are so blown out by big tire shit I don't want to lose the clearance

Definitely have looked at sliders a lot, 1 3/4 springs means a fair bit of fucking around to make any of them work though. Could build some to suit too.

I stuck some 1 inch blocks between the frame and spring last night and the ride height is pretty good there, I think that will be enough clearance to run a shackle with how flat the springs are.

Well, went ahead and ordered some AFCO slider boxes to play with/hack up/ruin. Not super keen on the roller bearings but they should be easy to make bushings for if they become an issue. I think they're gonna be an easier install than the shackle through the frame if I can make them play nice with the skinny springs.

Sliders arrived, I was home early anyway so why not hack fuck some shiny new parts?

Initial mockup. Spring width, bolt size and the bumper are all issues. I was able to drill the bushing sleeve to fit the 1/2" bolt to work with all the slider parts.

Snipped. This was the wrong place to cut, other one will be better and easier to jig up for welding Also cut a bit too much.

Glued back together.

Boxes tacked in and it's back on its weight. About out of gas for the welder, might have to run to the other shop and rob the bottle off the other welder temporarily. Definitely way less crap to hang up on back here now.

Grabbed a fuel cell from the satellite hoard, not sure it's gonna work out. 16 gallons is probably more than I need anyway.
