What's new

Trailer Sway

Nope. Both hitch and receiver are 2". The hole for the hitch pin on the receiver is a bit ovaled as is the corresponding hole on the hitch. The ball is 2 5/16".

<snip>

I ended up disassembling the weight distribution hitch and it was completely hacked together. I'm guessing that's where the majority of the movement is. I decided to replace the receiver and the whole weight distribution system while I'm in there.

Good call on upgrading. I think there are repair kits you can use to fix the hole in the receiver...

I wasn't ACTUALLY trying to say you had a receiver in a hitch .5" too big, or couldn't get the ball size right :laughing: I was more just using those as examples of how sloppy I thought it looked. Sounds like you found the culprit though!

I've done dumber things. :laughing:

I agree, there's no good reason to have 1 7/8" in this day and age, anything I have that came with 1 7/8" has been upgraded to 2"

i do the same but instead of 2" they all get 2-5/16" so every trailer is the same

That’s what I thought I did. I couldn’t believe it when I found it. I’ll be changing it to 2”.

That's a stock c-code leaf pack and a stock block. Truck is 100% stock, suspension wise.
Just because its stock doesn't mean its good. Lots of those trucks were specced out to be minivans, especially the 250s

If you are going thru the work of doing weld washers, add a nut to the top of the reciever behind the reinforcement ring. Then use a bolt to take the rattle/slop out.

To update this, I replaced the receiver with a 17k lb curt and the hitch with a 14k lb equal-i-zer setup. Took the time and adjusted it to have 75% weight distribution per their specs. At the same time I put new rear leaf bushings in and replaced the rear shackles with new oem Ford and did a Carli leveling kit with their signature series shocks and track bar. Yesterday was the first test drive.

No more sway.

Good deal. How bad were the rear leaf bushings?
