Tooth crown?

I know a lot of ppl getting implants lately and the dentist my Dad used has done 17k of them. On his last visit 3 patients were in with bone infections...

Also look into alternative root canal proceedures there is a lot of stuff out there you should look around at.

Family of Anaheim teacher sounds alarm on bone material used in surgeries - YouTube

No offense, but that is a cut rate product. All my materials are top notch and tested. You’re not going to die from bone grafting material.

Please don’t take this for face value either. The first 10 minutes were the only decent discussion. Teeth aren’t without a blood or nerve supply after a root canal. It is not dead. I have my own feelings about root canals. Especially since I have 3D radiography in my office. But she is wrong on a lot of things too.

I have 2 lower fronts cracked nearly in half (#23 and #26 i think) that have been that way for probably 15 years. I spit the pieces out after a faceplant on a mountain bike. Went to the dentist to get them looked at and he told me to fix them i'd need braces, fuck right off with that i'm out. Asked him what if I do nothing and he said they will probably fine.

They are still fine, can't see it when I smile. Real cold things bother them a little bit but hasnt' got worse

I'm not a doctor and never go see them, so take that advice for what its worth

Different styles of fractures. Yours are fine. You don’t have a potencio al root fracture and you are talking about single vs multirooted teeth.

Awesome good to know. Thank you. That was more informative than anything the dentist told me

If it is a second molar, not a huge deal.

Here is one thing I tell every patient (I never push treatment, as I don’t like stuff pushed on me). People live every day missing teeth. Ideal, no, but not needed to live.

I think back teeth are more important than front because they support your jaws. But usually I don’t replace second molars unless the patient wants them.

I broke my face on asphalt from a bike crash, back in like 2010 or so. I broke my front right tooth and the incisor next to it. The front tooth had been root canaled before so it just had a bad life haha.
Ended up with a veneer on the front center (you wouldn't notice unless you blacklighted it) and they filled the one next to it. Well, the next tooth in the series had superficial cracks but nothing pressing. Recently a chunk has flaked off of the back side of it and when it twinges it will send me through the roof. I've been procrastinating the dentist visit because it is not going to be pleasant haha.

The other two teeth that I had fixed have been fine after the repair so hopefully that is some comfort.

Come on big boy. I promise to not let SoFried show up here too

As someone routinely eating ice and/or popcorn old maids...I've had my share of fractured teeth and crowns. Had a crown replacement recently for that reason plus it caused a decay to start under the broken crown. Hairline cracks are not exactly easy to brush especially ones that open and close with eating.

Cracks that go below gum line on the tooth usually need to be pulled. Installing an implant can make sense and the smart way of dealing...pricey but best in long run. I didn't have the implant as its 2nd to last molar slot and not visible but can be a PITA eating sometimes.

The dumb way is to let it fester and cause an abscess at the root where it invades the body and causes long term issues...plus being a Pain every time you eat...

With me it was root canal and crown. Root canals are not fun, but they are the thing to do to avoid an abses. Root canals can be expensivs; north of $1K.
IMHO: Root canal's are your friend. :smokin:
I refuse to have another root canal. They'll have to yank the tooth or I'm leaving

Dumb question from a layperson. If the nerves/blood vessels inside the tooth are removed, how does it still have a blood supply?

The outside of the tooth also has nerves and a blood supply. It’s not a dead/free floating organ or the body would eject it for you (and will if it becomes infected enough).

Would you agree to a root canal, post and crown just because a dentist pointed to "decay" on an X-ray and threatened "we need to treat this now or it'll blow up and you'll be out of work", even if you had no symptoms?

I know it's not complete bullshit because my old dentist who retired warned me about these weak areas but never pushed to have work done. This new guy is so aggressive I can't help but not trust him.

Yes I would. It’s never going to get better, and will only get worse, and when it does, it’ll likely be at the most inconvenient time possible.

I had a filling come out and the molar had cracked. It wasn’t causing me any issues at the time. They offered to fill it but said it would likely come out again, and a cap was the better option, other than extraction.

It was expensive, but it has never given me a problem since, so I consider it money well spent. The whole procedure was simple and pain free aside from the cost.

I've had 1 root canal and NEVER again. They can just pull it.

My gold crown is going on 30 years old. It's probably my best toof.

Fixing to have to have another front one pulled. That puts me close to missing half of all my teeth. :(

I'm missing 4 molars and 3 of the remaining molars are crowns as are my two upper front teeth.

Don't get one of those 3D printed piece of shit that some offices offer now, they suck. Get a real crown. You'll have to deal with a temporary for a week or 2, which is annoying, but you'll adapt in a few days after the taste of the temp cement goes away, and then it's like it never happened.

Decay will never “go away.”

I don’t force people to do anything. I do warn them and watch. And when they ask me what I honestly think, that is exactly what I tell them. I don’t work on decay as I only do surgery. I’m not that aggressive thankfully.

Just curious, are you at a corporate office? Those are the worst about pushing treatment because they have to hit certain parameters just like a cop giving out tickets to get paid. I’m private practice so I’m not hard up to push treatment.

Find a good private practice. Get better service typically and someone who really cares. Where are you and I may have a specialist around you that I know and he will know the good docs. Or if you know a seasoned lab tech and ask them who does the better work.

Just outside of Syracuse, NY. I might get a second opinion at least.
