Waiting on an O2 sensor bung, trans mount, and a few other things.

Might be driving this weekend?

You do any thicker wall or thicker flat stock on that saw?
I think the heaviest I've done is 1/4 wall. It didn't care.

Ironically enough, I cut a bunch of stainless for my exhaust and that killed the general use blade. So I'll be investing in a stainless specific blade...

Did you do any internal bracing on the x-mem? I built a similar one out of same material (same Evo saw too) and got some feedback on how to improve corners from collapsing. Basically weld a cross section shaped piece in between the two. In this case a rectangle (that could cap the end). Weld all three together. Then the inner part cannot fold in/collapse, and is not visible from the outside.

Evo will mow through mild steel but as soon as the blade is dull it's fucked. So no hard shit like rebar or some types of stainless. I keep an extra sharpeded blade on hand and swap it in as soon as need. Else it breaks the teeth off and repair/resharpen is more expensive.

You mean like this? (filler plate is exaggerated)

Well, hit a major(?) snag. While prepping the trans for t-case installation I discovered that the nut securing the damper to the mainshaft wasn't even finger tight. Subsequent disassembly found a possible crack in the tailhousing. So now I'm back to waiting on parts.

Well... it's been a hot minute.
Work, family, vacation, work, weather... all slowed me down a bit.
But as of last weekend, the NV4500 is installed, and I drove it. Woohoo. :grinpimp:

A few weeks ago (so frustrating to admit the glacial pace that this has been), JUST after I installed the transmission, I noticed that the nut securing the damper to the output shaft wasn't even finger tight.

Refer to previous post for lock nut buggery.

So I pulled the output housing... and found this.

Turns out it isn't a crack. It's a casting imperfection. Yay.

So... I ordered some parts, and made a tool.

Progress.

Forth of July Weekend- swapped the fluid for Redline MT-85 (an NV4500 group on FB says it's "the right fluid"... so... yeah)
Finally gave it a more accurate alignment- it was at 3/16+ toe in, and I reduced it to 1/8". Tracks a bit better now, but I think it needs some caster, or my steering box is worn out, or it needs a stabilizer, or all of the above.

After all that I put some 50? miles on it.

Do you even overland, bro?

Wife and I ran to get some wood, stopped for ice cream, built a gate for a buddy, and performed some deck railing updates at my house.

The kid and I stopped for some sunset photos after installing the gate.

The transmission is ok, but I have a feeling it needs some help.
It was purchased used and supposedly in good working condition, but after finding the loose nut (and missing lock washer) I have my doubts.
After the first drive I was concerned because 3rd gear makes a lot of noise. I swapped fluids in hopes that the noise would be reduced - it wasn't.
All other gears are smooth/ reasonably quiet, and it shifts smoothly. Cruising in 5th is just lovely. (...it's the not so little things, right?)
So... I'm going to try to nurse it along and see if I can get through a few months- I need to get another project done before I tear this apart again.
Also need to replace/ repair the floors... I removed the carpet when I installed the trans and found more holes than I expected. :shaking:

Overall a good :usa:weekend, and a successful swap (in spite of the 3rd gear noise)

Cheers America:beer:

Maybe for a bandaid fix pour some lucas down through the shifter base so the trans will end up a bit over level from the side fill port.

I assume you know all about the $25qt fluid and over filling it by a quart?

But even so, that's to prevent wear, yours may already have damage

Sounds like someone I'm going with people before you were grabbing 3rd hard. My v10 5spd came back funky in 3rd every other gear happy as ever. And believe it would either hook and Go go go or blow the skins off.. before it was stolen then returned wet and ridden hard...

I'm running 4 quarts Redline MT-85, and yeah, spendy.

The shifting (synchronization) is fine- it's making noise after the clutch pedal is released and power is applied. The intensity of the noise increases with driveline speed, and goes away in all other gears.

I may try adding a bottle of Lucas Synthetic. But, I'm expecting this will require a mechanical repair.

Sounds like it could be a simple bearing\bushing, obviously still sucks to tear it all the way down but part itself might be a rather cheap fix. If you end up doing it sooner rather than later maybe try to filter and reuse the fluid.

Try the Lucas. However I'm sure that transmission had a hard life in third gear yes same symptoms or the had their hand on shifter all the time in 3rd rocking it around as well.. just sayn..

MT-85 is really thin, I tried it in my Jeeps T-18 and it was terrible, tried MT-90 and it was terrible...Redline 80-90 is perfect and they make some that is yellow metal compatible.

FML- I just spent $90 on this frickin gallon.

Buuuuttttt, I think the T18 is much more tolerant of heavier lube... ?

Been a while...

I've been hauling firewood-

Spent a few hours faffing about with the alternator/ belt this past weekend.

It had a nasty shriek on start up- I think the bearings were damaged from sitting for 8 years.

New alternator, new belt (shorter to put the adjustment lower in the bracket), and it was nice and quiet.

I had it loaded with old building materials so I drove it to work today to dump that stuff in our "recycling/ wood" dumpster.

This was the longest trip I've taken with it- 60+ miles one way. Everything seemed ok. Curious to see how much fuel it used.

Weekend update 15-17 September 2023

Forgot to tell you all that I'm a moron.
I was chasing a "Dead spot" in my steering ever since I got this truck on the road.
Turns out I forgot to fully tighten the pitman arm nut. :emb:
FOUR turns later it's a LOT better.

This past weekend was my 4th annual "camping" trip with some buddies.
We go to a local race to drink, cook food, talk shit, people watch, and possibly watch the racing.
I decided to take the shitbox.

If you know, you know. Pour one out for the old park.

Drove home early because we all had other obligations.

Properly motivated I pulled my other shit box out of storage and started scheming on how to finish this entirely too long project.

Primary take aways from this trip- these BDS leaf springs are AWFUL (100# or more too much rate) and this used trans is USED.

Hopefully the trans isn't a big hassle for you. I looked for over a year and couldn't find an early NV4500 for less than $1500, bought a aluminum top SM465 for either $100 or $125 and figured I'll just go taller tire or less gear lol.
