What's new

Team187 4400 Ultra4

All good man. We did find a froze up passenger front caliper so that’s why we haven’t had great brakes. So we put new calipers and pads on the fronts.

The KillMat is a new addition for this race. It was pretty damn hot down there in the 5hr TDRA race with all the coolant lines and exhaust run under my feet. I think with the mat, and new foot rest it should help a ton.

Good deal on prep and on addressing some heat issues.

What are your thoughts on the exhaust exiting right under your seat?
I'm thinking about going that for my rig and wonder if the fumes, heat and noise will be an issue.

in my experience the KillMat may make the problem worse. you need air flow to take the heat away. the boat side combined with the rear radiator keep the air below the belt tube in place it will slowly soak up the heat. notice the boat side and the honey comb ...

So that’s another new deal for us, the exhaust before was pointed right at the rear axle and that thing was scalding hot in the last race and now with the side exhaust the axle doesn’t got hot at all anymore. We also put some black widow mufflers in to quiet it down a little (but it’s still loud as hell). So far we’re happy with it.

That’s pretty rad. We might have to look into doing something like that

A picture story of how the day went for us at Ultra4 Disney. We were severely compromised by tires in this race as we were unable to find replacement KSpecs from the tires we'd blown at TDRA and testing. So we ran our 2 best Kspecs (and then cut a sidewall in prerunning), had one very questionable kspec as our backup, and then an almost bald Maxxis razr as our last chance spare. Up front we ran Mickey Thompson Baja Bosses (again that i'd found on FB), but they were DOT tires. We had a chance to buy some Mickey Stickies but couldn't get them to us in time for this race. We'd decided that in both qualifying and the beginning of the race we would run 60-70% of race pace just to try and get the tires to last before starting to turn it up as we got deeper into the race. Running the DOTs up front really hurt us on waterfall as we strugged the first two laps on exactly the line we walked up easily in prerunning. 3rd lap we finally went to the left (we tried the left on the first lap but Ken didn't like it) and one shotted it. Nosedive gave us fits the first lap (like it did for most 4400s) but the 2nd lap we walked right up it no problem. We were feeling pretty good on our third lap especially after walking waterfall, and ken got a little too heavy on the throttle and stood the car up on Nosedive. I went to shift it into reverse like I've saved many a roll but unfortunately ken was still standing on the brakes so it wouldn't have mattered. When we came down off the ledge it stuffed the front end into a ledge and crumpled the front passenger lower chassis rail. The bumpstop was about 6" behind where it should have been and was contacting the upper 4 link bar. I also noticed the sway bar mount on the axle was broken, and the shock tabs on the axle were cracked so we decided to call it a day and not risk causing thousands more in damage to move up a place or two. Ken and I were both totally fine, and we'll live to race another day.

Those pictures certainly sum up the race day.

Glad y'all were alright as the picture and description of the damages from the wheelstand certainly look rough.

New roof bars are bent and slugged in. We’re changing up the rear tire mount from the horizontal high as shit mount to a slanted much lower mount that both will move weight down as well as make it way easier to access. We’re also moving the trans cooler to the back behind the radiator so that we can move the winch behind the grill (we’re adding a JK style grill and hood). Finally we changed up the dash and lowered it roughly 4 inches so way better visibility and has some cool lines to it and also a center console with the shifter to make it a little more ergonomic. Mechanically so far everything has looked real good other than the Busted knuckle BJE were… busted so we’re switching them out for American iron. We also picked up 10 Mickey Thompson Baja boss X tires and 10 raceline 8x6.5 beadlocks (redrilling hubs to get away from 8x170).

Good deal on the rebuild progress and tires too. That’s good on lowering the spare and dash too. I’ve never understood why dashes are so massive/give such poor forward visibility in race vehicles.

i would be very leary of that seam right in the middle of the roof bar. you should of replaced the entire tube

It’s 2” .250 wall sleeved with 1.50 .250. If anything it’s ridiculous overkill. A LOT of racers repair sections of their cage the exact same way but with .120 wall.

Call TMR and order the tubes needed to replace everything from the belt line up. Those gaps at the notches and that splice are hack as fuck and will get sombody injured or killed. You guys aren't playing with trail rigs....

How we changed up the rear tire mount. Way more better and one person can actually remove the tire now vs before it took both of us. We’re going to build a sheet metal box under the tire kind of like how the Millers have on their pro chassis. If we had more time we would have liked to try and emulate their design with how the rear tire swings down but we’re running short on time.

Wrapped up all the welding over the weekend, car is looking really good. It’s a relief to finally be able to be done with repairs and moving forward with putting the 187 back together. We still have a ton of work to do but are well on track to have it all done by the end of the month. We got the TJ hood and chopped up JK grill in and winch relocated to where the trans cooler was inside the grill. Still need to build a push bumper for the front but should be wrapped up with that tonight hopefully.

How did all things KOH 2024 go? I know y'all ended up with a DNF, but wasn't sure what ended up taking you out.

Honestly just overall pace was why we didn’t finish. I took a pretty good tumble in the Maverick R two days before in the UTV Hammers race, stuffed a G out pretty good at 50-60mph and that very abrupt stop into the ledge of the g out did a number on my body and neck. Car held up actually for quite a while (60-70 more miles) and then sheared an A Arm bolt in the lower an arm in hwy 19. So when I crawled in the 4400 Saturday I was still pretty sore but yeah, we were just realistically too slow in the desert, combination of Ken’s inexperience driving in the JV desert, and IMO a shit shock tune that we’ve figured was good since Phil L did it (but it was tuned before Ken got it). We had the radflos rebuilt on the lakebed which we thought would be good but meh. He tried getting up to a decent speed a few times but couldn’t keep up with the car and it got a little squirrelly. We made it to lap two, smoked a couple big rocks which really got my neck hurting pretty good, managed to get hung up on a few absolutely nothing rocks I had to winch him off of and had no issues cruising through all of the real hard shit, go figure. No missed VCPs or penalties, finished lap 2 with time to spare to go out on lap 3 but we’d never gotten a chance to prerun the lap3 stuff and I REALLY wasn’t looking forward to seeing it for the first time in pitch black darkness. So we called it a day. Considering Ken literally had never even seen rocks that hard before in his life (and didn’t prerun it) I was pretty impressed we made it that far. We haven’t really looked at the car too hard yet but for sure both trailing arms are smoked. Both driveshafts will have to be replaced. Pass rear Bypass is leaking pretty good (and it was just rebuilt right before the race). We also fought some fuel slosh issues in the big off camber stuff so he might have to look into getting a different pickup. Overall, car held up really well. We didn’t beat on it at all in the desert but holy moley it’s a bad ass rock crawler. We took some crazy lines getting around people that were broke and the car never missed a beat. Super impressed with the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss X Competition tires. Sooooo much better than the Nittos.

Thanks for the detailed race recap. I knew about the roll in the UTV but didn’t know about the various other issues throughout the 4400 race day.

Makes sense on cruising through the hard stuff but getting hung up on easier stuff.
