Talk to me about 1/2 ton trucks

I love mine but I’m getting more like 17-18 mpg with about 1,000 lbs of extra tools, ladder rack, ect, and 285’s. I might be an anomaly for MPG’s I’m always way lower than other people claim to get on similar vehicles.

I dont even have that much stuff in mine and I'm averaging 18. I do have the 36 gallon tank that I dont let get below 1/2 a tank. We got 21 on our mostly freeway 5300 mile summer trip last year.

Since we are all talking about newer trucks, someone explain to me the deal with the bedsides on the newer F250/F350. Are they really as tall as they appear or is that an illusion? To me those things look like it would be near impossible to lift anything over the bedside and into the bed. I am not tall and it's not real easy for me to lift things in and out of my Ram 2500, but every time I pull up beside one of the F series, it looks like their bedsides are 3' tall.

They are for sure taller than a half ton. I can get smaller items over the bedside. Anything heavier i am up on the running board or jumping into the back to get out. I am 5'9" for reference. It probably wouldnt be as big of an issue for someone taller, but im not going to mess up my back trying to pull anything 40+ pounds over the side.

I beat on my 99.5 1/2 ton Chebby. I seriously got a Wednesday truck because I didnt have a major failure until over 326k. Towed way more than I should. My 10 bolt failed firest but the trans has been slipping for 100,000 miles. Still drives fine just doesnt want to shift out of OD. If I did it again I would have bought a 2500 gasser. But I am currently browsing for totaled 2500 gasser to half ass it into a 3/4 ton.

Buy a 3/4 gasser.

In true ADD fasion, I have gone from looking at 3/4 ton trucks with a diesel, and a gas, back to the F150.

A new F150 4x4 v6 or v8 lariat can be had around 45k looking at online prices.
I can get a used one, 2019 with under 30k miles for around 36k

IT seems that 2016 F150's are around 25k with just under 100k miles (which is probably way more than I will be at.

I guess my question is, is the 10k discount worth the 30k miles. Lets assume that all of these are financed at the same rate.

Can confirm.

My tow vehicle is my 04.5 Ram 2500 with a 5.9. I love it, but I will tell you this, my brother has a 2018 f350 6.7 diesel SRW, and if I ever buy a new truck, it will be a Ford 6.7. That thing is amazing. Quiet, hauls ass, tows his 42' 5th wheel hardly breaking a sweat.

I went through this last year. Spent a little over a year in a 2018 Ram 2500 with the 6.4. After two plus months in the shop, and no real end in sight, I cut bait and went to a 2019 Chevy 1500. Dealing with Ram and their service left a pretty bad taste in my mouth.

Mine has the 5.3 and 8 speed transmission. Yes, the front end leaves something to be desired, but I don’t stand outside looking at it enough to be annoyed. It has grown on me over the past few months, but I also liked the cat eyed chevys. It has the larger 4 cab that came with the redesign. The bed is 69.6” or something goofy like that. The engine and transmission have been flawless over the last 14K. My biggest gripe is the mushy shocks.

Time will tell if I stick with a half ton, or go back to a 3/4 ton after this. Can answer more specific questions if you have any. I considered Chevy, Ford, and Toyota when making my decision.

I had a very similar experience with Dodge and switched to Chevy. So far so good. The couple of recalls I have had were taken care of quickly and without surprise.

This is not helping reduce my desire to get a 6.7 at all! haha

I test drove the 6.2, got onto the on-ramp, floored it and it was...meh.

Hopped in a 6.7, on-ramp, floored it, got stuck to the seat and had to be doing 90 by the end of it. I'd never be able to do traffic again. Every stop light I'd be spooling it up and launching. Wasn't worth the then $8k premium and nevermind ever working on the thing.

If you ever think there is a chance you would want/need a 3/4 for towing, just get one. After having my 6.7 i dont think i will go back to a half ton until there is no chance that i will need to town anything more than a couple thousand pounds. I just like the smoothness of the diesel. My other vehicle is an A6 with the supercharger 3.0, and i get irritated when it has to drop 2-3 gears and rev up to 3-4k before it starts pulling good. I havent been able to get the tac on the 6.7 above 3200ish yet. Guessing that is either still limited, or i just havent pulled enough up a steep enough grade that the computer wanted those RPMs

That's one thing I don't care for the 6.2. The thing screams when you're towing. Sort of meant that way. Downshifts in tow mode and kicks the motor to 5k. Kinda...yeesh.

That was my experience too. My wife loved it.

yes.

take that 10K and use a third of it to buy the factory extended warranty, enjoy coverage until 150K.
don't worry about shit cause warranty.

my brother had a 6. oh no CPO truck with a factory extended warranty, and Ford spent a lot of money on that truck between 60-80K miles.
drop it off at the dealer and get you a loaner to drive.

I'm just going to toss out that currently if you have good credit Doge is offering 72mo 0% APR and Chevy is offering 84mo 0% APR on their 2020 half ton pickups. You can get into the lower models for mid to low 30's. If I didn't have my camper I would be trading my CTD in on one of them. But I really don't mind payments.

Thanks, I have pretty much ruled out the 1500 after driving one, plus they now have the cylinder deactivation which seems to be $$$ a few years down the road. Chevy is in the same boat so I have not really looked at them either.

Chevy or GMC 1500 with a 6.2. I have both a 2017 8 speed and a 2020 10 speed. Love the engine and it tows 10k easily. And unloaded i consistently get 20 mpg on the highway doing 80.

This is very odd, i'm also looking to get rid of my 2002 dodge 2500 4x4 cummins and im looking at 2015+ 1/2 tons. I basically narrowed it down to a 2.7 f150 with some type of helper springs in the back. Had a customer with a 2015 2.7 f150 let me tow approx 8500 lbs with it and i got to say it tows with the same get up and go as my cummins when it was single turbo. it felt planted as well, but he was running timbrens in the back. i was impressed.

3/4 ton because solid axles.

I have an '07 CTD that I'll probably keep forever, but if I was looking, a tradesman level power wagon would definitely be on my short list.
