What's new

Starlink yea or nay?

Another thing to note... you need a clear view of the sky. I mean CLEAR clear. Unobstructed. Virtually any obstruction what so ever will lead to interruptions.

I used the app when I set mine up. Pretty easy for me to have no obstructions.

The streaming issues cleared up so I checked the speeds again. Back up over 40 now. Still overcast but the clouds cover must be thinner now.

I have never had an issue with cloud cover. Currently snowing, and no issues. Mines still sitting on its tripod, but I am feeling motivated to get it moved soon. Weather has been very mild for this time of year, so may just go get it done.

I’ve never had issues with just clouds or even snow, the one time I had issues was under heavy rain, like pouring buckets, Noah’s Ark type rain. I have a nearly unobstructed view of the sky with it mounted on the peak of my roof.

Rain has picked back up and streaming started struggling again. Yep, back under 7mbps again.

That's good to know. That would be a limiting factor for me.

This is the first day I've had these struggles but yeah, it's definitely weather related. The dish sky view is 100% unobstructed. Streaming has cleaned up and it's improved up to the mid-teens now.

It still beats my alternatives. Current broadband was topping out around 7-8mbps and they gave me a $10-12k estimate to run new cable, so yeah...

I'm trying to figure out how to work with it. I have to video feeds going up and one coming down. Just not sure that Starlink will work for me. I'm certain that it won't work under the conditions that you had today.

Have seen quite a few pics and reports of the cable burning up around this area from the dish heater.

I got setup with AT&T 5g home internet. $55/month and around 3x the speed of the $110/month DSL I have.
That speed is with weak signal (1 bar) bought a booster to help a few weeks ago but Amazon shipping has been crazy slow lately.

Only a local observation.
Neighbor just moved in from Washington, mounted their starlink shit in a bad location due to snow sliding off the roof, and their reaction was "it snows another here"? When I told them yes, you'll have 4-5' of standing snow for several months they were not impressed.
Guess 50mbps bonded vdsl isn't good enough for them, it's plenty for my house.

Wife went and got a new phone and while there they talked her into taking the Verizon 5g home internet box home free for 30 days.

I had previously checked their website and it was unavailable but whatever.

Seems to be working well. Easily 2x as fast as the SL has been. Even running off a netgear wifi extender out here in the steel shop when the 5g box is 100' away.

Going to give it a go with my work from home duties for a few weeks but so far, SL may be getting ditched...

My uncle is off grid outside of Winnemucca. He works as a contractor for Microsoft. Doing programs security and conflict resolution. He loves his Starlink, and gets his job done with it.

Biggest problem I had with those was data limits.

That's the only thing out here that works all the time. Weekends and holidays are bad for internet connections.

So I decided to order the service.

Got me my antenna and router in 2 days. I was hopeful.

Got it plugged in, found a clear spot of sky and it connected.

Then it told me that the antenna and router aren't associated to my account.

No biggie, just need to get it fixed. Contact online customer support with issue, photo of box with kit number and wait.....and wait.... And wait....

So far it's been over 2.5 days and not a single acknowledgement of the service ticket.

It's kinda impressive that they give so little fucks

This has not been the case for me. I don’t know if it’s getting worse, but definitely not getting better.

interesting.

when i first hooked mine up it was about the same as my cable internet at the time ~20-30mbps down. and iirc up speeds where around 5-7.

just checking it now, i have 116down and 10.7up speeds.

i'm very happy with it for 2 main reasons. 1- fuck comcast 2- when the power goes out i can fire up the genny and still have good internet and phone service. before when the power was out the internet was almost always down too, and with out internet our phones dont work where i'm at.

Seeing almost all the teams in the paddock now using Starlink for at track access. Heck my current team wanted me to purchase the portable starlink so I will be in contact next month when I am in the bush in deepest darkest Africa. Cannot get the system in time before I leave so they are covering satelite phone costs instead.

Wanna buy mine?

I had planned on just tossing it in storage in case I ever wanted to go back... .but it could be sold.

FYI if T-Mobile 5g is available in your area, for $30 a month were ditching Comcast. The only thing I've noticed is the wifi signal isn't the best and you probably will need some sort of mesh wifi or a range extender.

Also, I'm not sure how it works but this thing has a way better signal that the phones do. Our phones barely work at our house but on the 5g wifi they work great.

If you have cell coverage, ATT Internet Air is pretty good. It's $55/month.
I shut down my DSL a couple weeks ago. The basic plan was $110 and just went up another $5.

The internet air is much faster too.

Mine's been working okay here at KOH. I'm working during the week and on video calls all day. So far it's been mostly reliable.

I've had mine 8 months or so now. When I first got it I was fairly consistent in the 40-50mbps range, now I'm consistently over 100. T-mo and at&t 5g aren't available where I'm at yet. When they are, I'll try them and see if I can save some dough, but I'm happy with what I have.

assuming your is the standard house SL.

The "portable" system is backpack sized, runs $2500 and $500 for global roaming.

The standard systems will not work in countries not served by SL, but the portable systems will.

Musk will not entertain the idea that any Starlink Company in South Africa has to be :mr-t: majority owned. And I fully support that.

The portable system is even smaller than the rectangular RV version. Target market is folks who are going to be way off the grid. Way off.

My problem mid February is I will be in the middle of an ancient collapsed volcano / caldera, so while there may be excellent cell service and high speed connection just 10 miles away, we get none of that in the bush camp.
