The other pieces are still in the water but the dad is trying to retrieve them today

edit: well, the pieces that weren't in the kid's face

Any barrel deformation, or is it all in the receiver?

It appears all in receiver. There is a similar pic that shows about 4" past the forend and barrel is intact. Looks out of battery to me with the way the carrier looks jammed in the back

Later 2 pics ...
I'mean on a SMALL SCREEN here, is that as far as it looks?
forcing cone toast, breech face lugs gone, bore burnt out, and some other issues....

I think you're looking through the hull of the shell, which is still in the chamber.

Was that a takedown style shotgun? Is it possible that the barrel rotated as it was fired or just before?

one of the lugs on the barrel extension looks sheared off, off to the ejection port side

firing pin still in one piece? Could see it being broken and the front half getting wedged in the bolt protruding just enough to give an OOB

Just don't know anything other than pics. The dad and son are still at their farm which is 3-4 hrs away. I last texted with him Friday. Sounds like son will come out of it with not much more than good story

That is good news. I've shot an A-5 maybe once in my lifetime and don't know much about them. Has Browning offered or asked to inspect it?

Glad he is going to pull through. Wonder if it is a new production issue? I have 3 vintage A5s and have never had any sort of issue with them.

gun was about 2 years old. I don't think Browning knows about it yet. Just happened 4 or 5 days ago

this is an issue with like actions. SBEs will do it also. People complain about these guns "clicking" but that clicking means it's stopping a fire out of battery situation. I have an A5 that I turkey hunt with and it will "click" sometimes when you are trying to ease the action closed to reduce noise vs letting it slam closed.

a different friend I showed it to was a LEO firearms instructor and he said they had a 870 do something similar, although he didn't remember it peeling the side off and dropping the trigger group

New A-5s are completely different actions to the old A-5s.

Good thing he didn't get hurt.

This is why I like my steel framed bps for goose and turkey loads.

Only asking because on a snow goose hunt last year we heard about a gun ending up in similar condition. Hevi ammo, supposedly the crimp didnt open. I wasnt there so who knows.

AFAIK, they just use commercial ammo. But I still don't have any more details

WTH kind of crimp can hold through locking lugs shearing off?

that is great news. that would give you a few minutes of oh shit. It'd be interesting to know once they figure out what happened, I'd like to know this story from here and not personally.

I dont know the details of what happened to the gun that had the Hevi ammo blow up. Thankfully I wasnt there, I just heard about it from the guides. Looks like you can see daylight through the barrel in pics from the o.p., I'm just curious it it was the gun, or the shell.

Metalurgy for $100 Alex???
good lord "hevi shot" aint THAT heavy?
looks like squib damage
