Shop and Tools: Tips and Tricks

I don't even use spouts on gas cans any more, this is my go to, and part of my trail kits in my rigs.
Alternative for when you can't get the can up high enough to siphon feed it. These things are $9 and work surprisingly well for the price....especially on thinner stuff like gas and diesel. I pumping transmission/gear oil for my little car the other day. I moved about a gallon and then really slowed down.

I'm always leery using those on my four stroke snowmobile. The fuel pump is in the tank, and I'm not too happy about banging into it with that thing.

Over-cautious?

OEM pump assembly is near $1000 CDN I believe.

Makes a reasonably good vacuum. Not sure I would do that with gas as it looks difficult to collect the gas into a bucket.

Great way to make a fuel/air bomb. Don't do this with gasoline.
The air blower just starts the vacuum, you don't leave the air running...
If that's too wreckless for you guys maybe don't try it :lmao:

i have one of these and love it. it keeps from spilling fuel all over with the dumb new gas can spouts. It works perfect in a Jerry can and is a lot faster.

Anyone know were to get replacement hoses? the attachment to the pump is a little funky and mine has a small crack in it.

For $8, just get a new one. :flipoff2:

I'd actually pay a reasonable amount for a similar, but higher quality version of these. Especially one that could pump gear oil a little better.

Where are you finding them for $8? I see them on Amazon for around $20.

Stolen from GJ.

Just some flatbar with holes drilled in it for threaded rod. First pic in the thread used a ton of stacked washers, but chopped up copper pipe, or plastic tube looks cleaner and is probably cheaper.

Obviously can be made much prettier/cleaner if you know how to weld...

I need to do something like this as my vise grip drawer is about 3 gallons of chaos.

No pic, but a friend asked if I had a 12 mm 6 point box end wrench to get an exhaust manifold bolt off a kubota tractor.

Couldn't use anything else as it was under the exhaust pipe elbow.

I didn't have one, but suggested sacrificing a 6 point socket by slicing a ring off the tip, then welding a handle to the ring.

It worked.

Scrap bar grate hogged out with the plasma or torch would probably work well too.

Yoga mats...

A few years ago I was out walking on trash night and someone had a yoga mat on top of their trash can. The gears turned, I picked it up, and threw it behind the seat of my truck. It's great to roll out if you need to crawl under the truck or sit on the ground or such. Works in the shop too when you're not using a creeper - a lot nicer than laying on concrete or gravel or... The other week my neighbor's wife called me over to see if I wanted to take some old garden tools they were getting rid of. She had a yoga mat on the pile that she said was ratty (looked fine to me) and she had bought a new one. I took that too.

Yeah I did floor mats or razor blade out rear carpet from SUV too many times. My mom's old yoga mat work perfect. I bring 1 for each person so I ain't the only one crawling around under the trucks.

How many times did you sniff them while they were freshly used?:flipoff2:

Door panels or greasy floor mats? Look around for a second and lay on a pre-removed hood. They are form fitting. :flipoff2:
Last dana 60 I pulled I threw a hood under the truck to lay down on. I dropped the axle on the hood and it made it a whole lot easier to get the axle out of there cause you just slide it instead of wrestling with it and getting a hernia.

Another good one is old vinyl banners. Doesn't have the cushion of a yoga mat, but they keep you clean and dry, come in all different sizes and you can get them free after events.

Foam sleeping bag mats are mucho better. Less than $10 at wally world. Nice 1/2-5/8" foam.

Some of the dollar stores sell them for a few bucks. $5 below here has decent black rubbery ones for $4.99.

I grabbed a 1-5/16" crows foot wrench for my buggy tool box for tightening up jam nuts on 7/8x3/4 rod ends on a trip. Today I found a loose jam nut, and of course it's the worst one to get a wrench on. But... the crows foot had no problem. Looks like I'm grabbing one for the shop, too.

My friend always used old carpets In his shop. At work I use cardboard boxes to lay on if I’m outside my shop or somewhere a creeper is too tall.
Go to Home Depot and get one of the husky kneeling pads. Yes it’s more than a free yoga mat but well worth it. I have one at work after my garden style one was permanently squished.
