School me on 9" ratios

Who the fuck asked about SD60s?
My point was there's price and build points where a 9" works and a 9" doesn't. Whether or not you can use a stock car or pickup housing matters a lot to that.
This ain't shit shat keep your derails out of tech threads and stop fucking up one of the threads I've enjoyed following
Give the piece of shit carpetbagger some credit too.

9” related question…

is the distance between the two inner shafts inside the carrier different compared to a 60?
I think I remember the answer is no, but if so how much difference? I’m trying to figure out WMS on paper, so I’m pretty sure pulling shafts from a 60 is going to wind up like an inch or two narrower than the 60 the shafts came from?

The locker you choose matters in the 9" at least. My rear axle shafts are perfect length for a zip locker, but broke the side gears out of a Detroit because they didn't engage enough for the Detroit.

Some info on the spread sheets and yootube on this page:

I can’t remember what thread we were talking about 9/10 spools and spline landings in. I’m back on the 3rd bench today and picked up a Gearworks 35 spline spool that has the splines ran almost all the way through like someone asked for. Thought I’d throw out a couple pictures because that makes this spool, axle shaft cross compatible with an ARB or Detroit style locker. The other two spools I have on hand are the kind that have the splines in the same place as an ARB does with a pin space in between.

For the 40 spline guys, are yall using the 3.25 case or stepping up to the 3.8 case for the insurance of the larger bearings and area at the carrier? Our use would be for u4.

So random fun fact about the big 3.812" bearing 3rds, it's been a while so I'm not 100% (and maybe JR could confirm), but IIRC they use super common 387AS/382A (Set 76) bearing and race, the same as 14b carrier bearings and old front D60 inner wheel bearings I believe? Not that it means much but I enjoyed that little tidbit, they're plenty common and reasonably priced, 2.25" ID for a nice large carrier with plenty of meat at larger shaft diameters

Yeah, I'm not even sure 40 spline is an option in the 3.25" version. Seemed like everything I saw for 40 spline required the 3.812"

You can get 40 spline in 3.25 9" forsure. Would have to check gearworks site again but I believe there is also a 10" spool for 3.25 which I dont fully understand why because they are the same pattern as a 9" unless I am missing something.

I don’t think you are missing anything. I’ve done a lot mix/matching. Regular 9” and gearworks stuff use the same blue print architecture. The bolt circle for the R&P is the same. The load bolts are in the same spot just outside the OD of the spool or locker.

I could be incorrect because dad procured the parts. He has me believing that if you want a 40 spline ARB (which is what I assembled for his front axle) that it can only be done with the 3.812 bearings. I have not verified that to be true or untrue.

I did GW 40 spline spools in 3.25 case for a guy. It's not my first choice. There's just not a lot of material between the carrier bearing and the shaft hole.

It was me in the Junk yard 9" thread!! That's pretty dang close to what makes the most sense in my head. Splines from face to face!!

How far in would you say the splines start on the long end? Look like close to 1 inch in.

That sounds about right. I didn’t measure and I already have it crated up and in the trailer

On a 35spline GW spool it's 2.25 to the splines and about 1.125 to the step machined in. I might have measurements of a 40 here. Let my dig around a bit but I think nm it's 1.125 to the splines.
