Saunas... Learn me something

MTU alumni here, as are wife and kids - still spend a lot of time up in the Keweenaw
To keep in the theme of the thread - Gotta love that the Wads dorm at MTU has a sauna

In 2005/2006 mcnair had one as well, guessing they still do. The "stove" was a 100+ year old cast iron radiator with a 1" ball valve connected to the 60 psi steam line from the central heating plant. I've been in a lot of saunas, and that thing was the most powerful heater I've ever experienced. You'd crack that valve about 25%, throw a pint of water on the radiator, and hang on. Only issue we ever had was the exterior doors locking at night. We got locked outside with no way to get back in after jumping in the snow, finally got someone to let us in and our hair and shorts were frozen solid.

I was there in the late 80's/early 90's....no door locks on the exterior dorm doors back in those days that I recall! We also used to sauna at an old farm house out on LIminga Rd. that was the unoffical "club house" (MTU 4 wheelers). Lots of good memories.

All 3 of the halls had/have saunas. The sauna in Douglas hall was the closest to outside, I don't remember getting locked out though.

Coyote is your son a part of the MTU 4 Wheelers group? I was just up there for their annual poker run.

What's the appeal of a sauna? Is that a cold climate thing? Around here, 10 minutes outside and you're sweating your balls off in 90% humidity.

My son Nathan is not part of the MTU 4-wheelers, I was.

He is in the Forestry Program and is currently staying at the Ford camp in Alberta.
At that camp they have a Sauna building with a century old wood fired sauna in the basement.
Every building at the camp smells old, neat place with a cool history.

I was in the club mid 80's.
Did you ever help with the POR Rally?

By far the best club experience I've had. No politics in that club just wheeling and beer drinking. Low drama.

Yep, it was a great club, we did some camping too - Gratiot River, Keystone Bay, Rocket Launch, etc.

For the POR, I was usually pit crewing for a rally team, (Tortoise Pro-Rally - A buddy of mine ran a Jeep Scrambler. I co-drove for a while in the 90's and still pit crew for him on occasion.)
The club did help with sweeps and corner marshalling. It was quite a highlighted event in the fall!

Start a fire, put a few decent milk jug size rocks in it, (not from a place where they’ve been submerged in water for decades)

Dig a hole

Cut 3-4 saplings, bend and bury the ends to form a dome around the hole.

Cover with tarp

Put hot rocks in hole

Pour water on them.

Sweat.

The rally hasn't happened in the keweenaw area for years now, last I remeber was 2010 maybe? Marquette area now. Travis Pastrana used to race and he would do a presentation at mtu while in town.

Hard to describe, but I really enjoy them. If I had time I'd sauna every night. Some finnish ancestry yoopers still do. Has to be wood fired, and has to get to 212F on the gauge on the wall for me. I don't enjoy electric/safe/cold sauna's

A buddy and I were embedded into the race with a medic. So we ran the course as fast as we could mixed in with the racers. I navigated. Big fun!!

Did you know Steve Hanna ?
Yep, was a good guy. Unfortunate I only wheeled with him a couple times, but used to swap jeep parts with him too.

This. Just relax and sweat. Not humid.

Hard to describe.
