rolling driveway gate design figures and/or guidelines

Not sure how he clears his driveway in the winter, but tracks will get the shit torn out of them by a steel edged plow. Or tear the shit out of a blower.
oh yeah skiddy steer would mean that angle iron would need a lot bigger footing than the 24"Dx12"W curb I was thinking
cantrilever more points for thereof yesyes

Hard to find pics of the vert tilt drive system. Most are either tiny pictures or have a honking cover over the get-it-done end.

The ones I could find were by LazyGate, but the pics arent very big or detailed. But their system is a hinge on the ground, a big spring to counter the weight of the gate and a normal gate actuator arranged to pull the gate up rather than swing. All well within diy for the Irate crowd.

They list a "Max Super Arm 2300" on their accessories price list. That sucker pulls around 1500 to 2300 lbs depending on model. impressive.

Except for the obvious problem of the track in a track it makes for a pretty slick setup to pour the concrete around a 2x4 laying on its side. It gives you a 1.5x3.5 track to put the v rail in and protects it from truck traffic pliws etc but if you have shitty ground covering (gravel dirt etc) it's for sure going to periodically fill with shit.

How bout a track on the other side , probably not called a track cause it will be about a foot high, anything in the driveway is gonna suck.

Also, IDK if you care or not. DOT wants these gates to be off the road enough to pull in a semi or box truck. I don’t know the exact distance. Are you wanting to plow snow off the road through the gate?

For snow on the track, a simple steel way wiper would work to plow it off or chip the ice off.

Build it on top of a scale railroad track and put a snow train on it. Easy replaceable parts too.

This is a customer's gate, it's two one on the left and one on the right.

I don't think that he'll appreciate me taking pictures inside of his yard though.

shit bro, thanks man

The whole rolling panel is 18'? Looks like two of them that meet in the middle

maybe my 10' between rollers with a 26' panel to make a 16' opening is a little optimistic, might need 15' between the rollers and a 30' panel which is getting pretty ridiculous

Nothing wrong with that setup, pretty standard commercial setup.

The ones I see that have a problem is due to the rollers not being locked to the posts and slipping either down/up or around. Once they turn even a degree it causes a ton of drag on the roller and makes it a full size bitch to close/open.

If I did that style I would mount the rollers on pillow block flanges or some other type of axle where the rollers would be locked on the same plane with ball bearings not bullshit bushings or just nylon wheel on steel axle.

Yes, and yes. It is heavy but they move freely. The rollers that guide the gate attach to the posts with u bolts, so they can be adjusted as needed.

This is at work, these gates are a mofo to open/close. They are also really weak and flop around like a wet noodle.

Are the rollers have greaseable bearings? The gate I posted has greaseable bearings.

mine got cast iron roller wheels and saddles, but otherwise look like the ones posted
grease zerks on them and all

was gonna go with 90deg rollers and run square tube on edge, but these ones came up for damn near free

Do y'all get a lot of wind there? We're currently on day three of 30 mph sustained, 50+ gusts. I'd be afraid it would blow that thing out of alignment.
Slow response, we have an occasional Santa Ana condition where we see probably 40 mph gusts, I've never thought too much about it, the gate probably weighs more than 1000 lbs, the perimeter frame is 1/4" or better. it uses 6 old school garage door springs as a counter balance. It has a huge amount of stored energy.

At Christmas I hang a huge lit wreath on it, pretty cool to watch this giant wreath open and close. When I do it I have to adjust the counterbalance to adjust. It's balanced so you can open and close it one handed. When I hang the wreath i'll get some pictures of the guts.

To add to what I said before about V-groove rollers on a track and snow...

We had several inches of wet, heavy snow yesterday. My boys opened the gate to get one of the quads out. The ground around the track was completely packed with snow (mainly from walking on it) and the wheel jumped off. They couldn't get it closed.

I'm thinking I'll have a 16' clear span, guess that'd be like 18' hanging past the first roller to get a little overlap going on both sides
ended up with 4 rollers for 2" pipe for $20, so I guess I'm framing it out of 2" sch40
what kinda spacing should I have between the rollers? pipes will be about 5' apart vertically, I assume the "tail" to it will be at least like 10' long but I have no clue at all

might do a roller on the front, would like to avoid it
if I did one it'd be a V-roller rolling on angle iron embedded in a concrete drive-over curb thing
I'm a little late to the party, but I've used some really nice hardware on cantilever gates. The stuff isn't cheap, but it holds up well.
The supplier has warehouses in Chicago and Texas. I'll try to post a link if you're interested.
I've got extra rollers in my shop I'd probably sell at a discounted price, because they've been sitting around for a couple years.

Depending on the series of the rollers I might be interested in them.

I probably won't get down to my shop until Sunday. I'll get a picture.
They aren't like the rollers for pipe. They've got bearings and ride in a square channel.
The channel can be screwed, or welded to whatever gate material you use.

Check this place for gate hardware etc.

That's what I'm looking for. Dura gate style
