What's new

RIP Bonhomme Richard

Question I have is the articles says none of the other ideas to save the ship made financial sense. Since when does the .gov care about financial sense? Is it they mean by fixing it the politicians wouldn’t get as much kickbacks vs building a new one would?

The navy still has a budget to keep in mind. When faced with a repair bill that would be about as big as building a new carrier, and remembering that there's at least one shiny new boat being built currently, it does make sense.

DOD certainly has a budget limit. As does each subordinate command. Yes, congress gets to decide how much money to print, but everyone below that has to live within what they say we get. Beyond that, all the stories aside, by and large cost and living within one's means problematically matters just as much to those in Navy procurement/budgeting as it does to anyone else. There's elements of truth to all the stories about golden toilet seats and wasting money, but they're more of a rarity than the norm.

Now, to be transparent, I am involved in navy program management & acquisition, so the naysayers would probably say any opinion I have is total BS, but take it for what it's worth.

Yes and no. High fire risk area, such as machinery spaces, magazines, hanger deck, vehicle decks, etc do have some form of fixed firefighting system. Some are water sprinklers, some AFFF and some halon or similar inert gas. General spaces do not. However, when you're in a availability these systems are shut down for maintenance, though only after the hazards are removed and with mitigations such as portable fire hoses.

thanks.

Sad to see the old Bonny Dick go down like that. A couple more of what I considered to be cool pics. An LCAC and 53's on the flight deck.

According to the article it would cost $3 billion to repair. LOL. That is just retarded. The US navy is getting dry fawked by its contractors.

Welp what we need now are shipbuilding facilities. There finally seems to be serious talk about it.

That's likely the low and only bid. If it cost triple that, it would be getting patched up.

Looks like it'll get towed here. Bremerton, aka, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, premier naval repair facility on the west coast, and also home to the largest decommissioned ship station. The Missouri was here for decades, between Viet Nam and re-entering the fleet for a few years. I had the chance to tour it as a tourist trap when I was a kid. They've scrapped an absolute crap-ton of ships and boats here over the decades. My go-to source for scrapping AMC cars after I pick them clean of jeep parts is Navy City Metals, and they've got a rail car direct from the shipyard, which is then broken down further prior to reselling yet again.

100%

When I was working in a shipyard over 10 years ago we were bidding 1bil per ship. After the economy tanked it somehow went to 3 ships for 1bil. (Approx bids, not exact)

lots of money in government work.

Any idea how much work is involved? In many ways it's actually harder than building a new ship - beyond having the strip all the burned junk out, you're also having to work around all the existing structure, whereas a new ship everything can be put together in a logical order when it's accessible before you start putting bits together. Probably every single electrical cable needs to be redone, entire top 3/4 of ship needs new paint, etc etc. Don't forget also that lots of the gear that burned up isn't cheap to replace either - lots of fancy computer systems and other complex electronic hardware that isn't cheap to buy.

By contrast, decommissioning the ship will cost roughly $30 million and will be implemented over the next nine to 12 months, Ver Hage said.

Which is why I give zero fucks about military funding, just wasteful spending. Park that bitch on a beach in Bangladesh or Pakistan and walk away.

But... the hope of dreams of the govt spending less money will never happen, so at least that 30 mil goes to private contractors/citizens.

Worst times and also the best times working the deck.

I don't know fuck all about ships, but a chain link fence on a billion dollar boat?

Those are called flight deck nets. Cable nets that keep your ass and equipment from getting blown over the side. Very useful for a flight deck sailor.

I'm going with this. Ship repair is a time consuming and costly undertaking. I was on 2 different aircraft carriers while they were doing a "mini-overhaul" and it's a nightmare what's involved.

Damn I thought you were talking about Old IronSides

USS Constitution. The Lil' Richy was sunk as it captured an English Frifgate the Serapis in our war of Independence. IIRC No Google fu. Someone correct me if I fail.

Yeah, the first BHR sunk after the battle of Flamborough Head.

My father sailed on BHR CVA31 as XO of CVW-21.

Sad to see this one go this way.

didnt open this thread till just now.. didnt realize it was a thread about a ship.. cuz the thread title doesnt say USS.. so the name was sorta familiar, so I finally ckicked it

interesting reading, and Im wondering if I know anyone who has spent a great deal of time on her..

havent noticed anything on facebook..

just cuz of life I know smoke damage can really screw with technology.. in the walls, and everywhere.. I didnt read this, but I would bet smoke damage is the worst part..

I remember when I worked on the USS Fife; I was surprised they had armed MPs at the entrances to the reduction gear when they were working on it.

I asked a chief why that was.

He said in case a sailor didn't want to go to sea, he/she couldn't sabotage said reduction gear.

Wow!

I don’t believe the story until they announce the name. Why not announce it? He is no longer protected by the Navy once he becomes a criminal and should be treated as such.
He probably is a protected ethnicity. Same/similar reason they wouldn’t release the name of the cop that shot Ashli Babbit and why they don’t give a description of most criminals.
