Questions for the Weightlifters

How do you know?

Also at different times- broken elbow, broken hand, broken toe (twice), broken collarbone.

So my wife visited her doctor a few weeks back and was talking to her about what she’s doing and what she can do now to help her as she ages. My wife runs 5 days a week and the doctor told her that’s good but she should use some of that running time to work on building muscle.

With that said it sounds like she wants to start lifting weights. She was asking what to do and I’m a rookie too so I really don’t know. Would the strong lift program work for her?

Stupid question time the strong lifts wants you to rest a few minutes between each set. Can you have 2 bars to alternate sets on different lifts to speed it up. Say squat and overhead press as long as they target different parts of your body?
You can, but you won’t be able to lift as much weight as you would doing one lift at a time. You can do your warm up sets for one lift between work sets of another lift without disrupting things as much.

Once the weights get heavy you’ve got to rest more than a couple minutes between sets.

Yes. Strength training isn't really any different male to female. Try convincing women that squatting heavy is what they should be doing though....

Have her do 3 sets of 5 and add weight, except deadlift, which is 1 set of 5. Eventually she’ll need to switch to 5 sets of 3. Maybe 2 sets of 3 instead of 1 set of 5 on deadlifts.

I’m was shocked by the fact that her doctor who is also female was suggesting she lift weights to improve her health. This is an actual doctor who wants to help improve people lives not just push drugs and treat symptoms.

Ask her if she wants an ass a dime can be zinged off in 20 years. :smokin:

At one point that wasn't even a warmup for me as it wasn't a full plate. Didn't do anything below a full plate until at least 405:laughing:

Now I'd be lucky to get that cleanly
What kind of plates were you using?

Nevermind. I was dumb. I get what you’re saying now.

Looking to start lifting weights to help increase my strength. I do not want to build extra muscle doing this. I don’t care what I look like, I just want to be strong and fast.

My chiropractor and another close buddy recommend foundation training. Bear crawls into crabwalks are really good too.

My wife does a modified version of stronglifts. It's a good program for men and women.

If your wife lifts with you though just be aware recovery is a totally different ballgame for women.

Its really good thing-helps reverse bone density loss, prevent osteoporosis

My wife has been lifting in our gym for yrs now, we dont lift together much but have.
Strong lifts is not great program for novices and def not female novices. Females once get to mid novice phase tend to need more sets less reps when you stall on 3x5, like 5x3

Any weight bearing exercises are great for women. Even band resistance.

Osteoporosis is nasty to the female gender.

Saturday - Deadlifts, Bench
Yesterday - Heavy Squats, Med bench, chins, BOR's

This am light Superset squats, med. bench, light press, chins

What Protein Powder are you using?

I’m on Core 42gram singles by Fairlife but at $4.50 each it sucks. Many Years ago I would put a banana, 1/4 peanut butter, shredded wheat, milk and protein powder in a blender. A few years back I was using a Hemp powder.

I need a high quality powder. Thoughts?

I just use the local cheese plants stuff. They buy material from me so I buy stuff from them.
This whey is $1.09 per serving for 25 grams protein.

Been using the body health perfect aminos. They are about $1.25 for 30 grams of protein. I can definitely tell my muscles are not as sore the next day after a big workout after I started taking these. 2 servings at breakfast and 1 before bed.

Big bag of Optimum Nutrition from Costco. Also buy Fairlife there when they've got it.

20+
weigh 205ish
can do 5 with two 45's and a 5 hanging from belt

I weigh 160-165 (5'8).
I've maintained 20-30. Max ever when I was rock climbing a lot was 40. I feel like I could probably work up to that again, but a lot of that is ego talking :flipoff2:

Thats really good. Id say 90 percent of dudes cant do 20

which is why i asked the question. i recently got a pullup bar and was shocked that can barely do 2 maybe 3. im 5'7" 205ish wouldnt consider myself weak but man, that was not what i was expecting. making it a goal to get to 10, then evaluate from there.

15-20 depending on the day at roughly 200 lbs body weight. Honestly I feel like this is pretty a body weight specific metric, when all I did was swim and I was 175lb I could easily do sets of 15+. Now I don't have that endurance because I'm at 200 lbs but my weighted pullups are significantly heavier.

I’m at 6 maybe 7 in a row at 190ish for a legit pull up. I haven’t done a set to failure in a while. Maybe tonight I’ll try and see how many I get.
