Been looking to put a 1/4-1/2 a cow in the freezer. Seeing all this grass feed and finished locally. I am not a fan of that and want grain finished just tastes better to me. Seems like the average price if I pickup is $4.50/lbs. cut, wrapped, butcher fees included. Is that the going rate or do I need to search harder. Going to be a drive to get to grain finished so if I am driving 2-3 hrs one way I don't want to over pay. So is 4.50/lbs about right?

Just checked the last one I got (in 2019) and it was 4.10/lb with everything. Small local guy, didn't really shop it

Did a 1/2 from a local rancher, was $5/lb all done and in the freezer. That was January kill date.

Butchers are backup up for months here and have been for a year. $4.50 isn't bad, I've seen it higher here in beef country.

Does this really pencil out versus grocery store sales?

I bought half a cow one and got burned by ****ty meat.

Ground beef $2.99lb

Tbone sales 4.77lb

Roasts for days 2.99lb-5.99lb

Ribeyes $6lb

Throw in $40 worth of filets if necessary

Just doesn't make financial sense to me, unless you're certain there's a better quality:homer:

I think even ground is about $6 a pound here, so yes it pencils out in our location.

Where are you getting T-bone for 4.77? That ****s $11 to $13 a pound at the store here. My stuff pencils out, but for different reasons than others would likely consider.

My beef comes from my parents hobby farm. The cow’s are pets while they’re here. They get over fed good hay and treats then grained out for a month. I’m paying what it costs them to raise Giant hobby cows. Not ones ran on a feed lot timeline intended to maximize profitability. I cooked ribeye’s last night that are cartoonishly large, like it doesn’t even make sense. The meat I get is better than store bought stuff, anyone who gets to eat it agrees.

That’s not important to some but I pretty much live on a paleo diet. Meat and vegetables only so I’m picky about my meat.

I paid $4.50/Lb for our last 1/2 cow back in Sept of 2020. We have been buying from this ranch for 12ish years now. Quality is there and we get great beef every time from them.

Wow, Kroger had tbone value packs, 2 days ago for 4.77, on sale

I get cranky if I have to pay $6lb for steaks

All my prices posted were sale prices, but, that's how I keep my freezer stocked

I just paid about $5.50/lb delivered for a 1/4 beef. The few cuts we have tried have been great.
The beef came from a good dude who lives a few miles from me and supports the community, so even if it costs a little more I will happily buy from him again in the future.

Can buy from a local grower for $1.40 live weight. About $250/quarter for vacuum packed. So just under $5.50/lb.

Call me wasteful, yuppie or any other fun name but I dont want $5 tbones or $6 ribeye. I know they are edible, but I want good food that I actually want to eat. I also drive a rusty 04 tahoe and tow my rusty utility trailer with it. I am cheap in some areas, but not food.

3.25 to 3.75 a lb hanging weight depending on size and how much I get (no hide head hooves or guts for those not in the know, you will loose another 30% or more of this weight in processing)
50 cent a lb to have it processed and vac sealed.

Well, I got burned on a cow

I don't buy meat at Wal-Mart, aside from the frozen 100% beef patties for quick meals

I get most of my steaks, roasts and briskets at kroger, while I have no idea on how to pick out a nice cut (aside from looking at marbeling), I've gotten really good at grilling/ cooking/ smoking and can beat a "good" resturaunt.

I haven't yet had a better steak than a $6lb ribeye I left on my counter for 90min, salt, pepper, sear flip sear flip flip flip pull rest eat. If you think I should try a magical $15 steak from a butcher, I might try it

My folks sell beef. They're 13-14 months out on appointments with the handful of processors still in the area.

They just took a pair in that could have used another 2 months of feed, because the processor called with an opening due to cancellation. It's tough to keep the customer base satisfied when you can't get them product for over a year.

Same here. We looked into a 1/4 and it didn't make sense dollar wise to us.

Sams club is $16.00/lb for ribeyes, 14 for strips, 21 for tenderloins. If you can't make $5 pencil out, I don't understand your math. We grow our own so it's a no-brainer for us, but we are starting to dabble in selling beef portions to the public and it helps us and the buyer for the most part if they have a deep freeze to hold it.

Ouch. I buy a cow every year bought two this year on for me and one for the inlaws. Been doing it for the last 4 years.

I pre commit the year prior to how many I want... I paid $3.00/lb Canadian on roughly 600lb hanging weight each cow at the butchers, that's transport, kill fee, cut and wrapped.

I wish we lived near each other, because I would love to show you a moderately priced CHOICE ribeye for $12.99 a lb from a local butcher. Everything is wet aged 40 days before going on the rack. I would gladly buy them just so you could try it. These are not organic foo foo grass finished yada yada cows either (which I will admit, I do enjoy). This is regular beef, not ****ed with, not frozen, just ****ing better than anything you will find at kroger.

So, just to add something. These opinions of mine are coming after eating nothing but freezer meat for 2 months, the rona hoard was out of control and I didnt want to waste anything. Most was cheaper kroger meat that I had stocked up on. Part of the reason to get rid of most of it was to fill the stockpile back up with a local 1/2 cow and 1/2 pig. I hope I dont get burned like you, the last local pig I bought into was gross.

Seems like most our area is 6.50 a lb. I just got 1/3 of a half and paid 4.27 a lb, but it came from warden area in Eastern WA.

It’s ok if you just don’t care. Some people just don’t need to be aficionados of certain things. I CANNOT tell the difference in taste between $10 dollar a bottle wine, and $300 dollar a bottle wine that’s crazy aged. It’s never going to matter to me regardless of how any wine loving douche bag needs me to validate his ability to pick apart the different notes.

I’m the beef equivalent douche bag. I think I’ve got the $300 dollar wine (beef) locked up while most can’t tell or don’t care. It’s just something I treat myself and my family with.

You're getting ripped off. We regularly get ribeye for $4.99/lb and filet mignon for $7.99/lb.

We've been buying 80/20 ground in 10 pound tubes for $3.79 Lb most of it has been canned or frozen into hamburger patties, made into chili and canned. Mom tried making some into salami, it's ok but we think it needed to be ground up finer. Tried my hand at Buckboard bacon, again it is okay but I think after reading some other folks I need to not wash as much salt off next time.
We don't buy steaks not that we don't like them, part of the reason for me is mom will turn them into shoe leather, because she is afraid of raw meat, and our grocery store keeps the meat case unlit to keep the lights from adding heat to the case so unless you have flashlight you have no idea what is inside.
We eat a lot of casseroles and stews because they are easy for mom to prepare at, 93 elaborate cooking isn't her forte, not that it ever was simple meat and pototoes works everytime.
Heard that the local meat packer is under new management so I going over to talk to them on Friday when mom is getting her hair permed, I have to do something for an hour and half.

:lmao: Yep. Sam's Club is ripping me off. Jacking the price up and throwing **** away on the off chance I come in and pay too much because the general public would never buy it at that price. Did you miss the part where I'm not even buying it? I just did a quick online search in case I wanted to swing by after work and buy it.
