What's new

Official Irate drone owners thread

I normally take stills but they are all too big of files to post here. Made this video from a run with my Mopar group.

I'm getting good at smacking things with my Mavic Air 2. This time, however, it continued to fly, even with one of the rear rotating legs folded at about a 30 degree angle... also, at the end of the video, you can tell that the gimbal was going crazy.

After it touched down, I turned it off, rotated the leg back into flight position, and clipped the light pod back in place, and it started and flew just fine!!!

(I got confused on direction of travel - thought the collision sensors would keep me from hitting the building, but it was actually flying sideways and there are no sensors on the sides of the Air 2)

I need help from the DJI users!

The company I work for has a DJI Mavic 2 and it's been collecting cobwebs for about a year. We went to fire it up today and no one can get the app on their phone. Google says use the "DJI fly" app, but on android it doesn't pop up and my co-worker with an iphone has the app but the app wont launch.

Before I waste my time on idiots, anyone want a like new DJI RC-N1 controller? Complete with sticks and the 3 adapter cables. $50

I have the same thing. I am keeping mine in case the one with the screen shits the bed. I just got the Mavic 3 for xmas and GF bought the upgraded remote for my birthday. Personally, I don't think the upgraded one has the distance that the one in your picture has. Of course when I start losing video stream, my ass puckers and I turn that bitch around.

do the DJI dealios not have any kind of on screen display with RSSI information on them?

What is RSSI?

Honestly, I am still learning mine. I have been flying it just for shits and giggles and try to figure out things as I go along. I know it uses/connects to 20 to 30 satellites. Fuckers come with the shittiest, tiniest no information having instructing manual ever. I YouTube and read the manual online when I need to know something.
This weekend I was up in the Shenandoah mountains at a cabin and the map was not working. Just blank. I had a hell of a time finding my way back home until I saw the road. I could have hit the RTB button but there were so many trees and power lines that I didn't feel too good about in landing successfully.
I currently have it set to climb to 300ft for an auto return. Excessive but it gives me the warm fuzzies. I used it at the house one time when I lost video and map and I was like waiting around until the thing came out of the 300ft hover to the point I could hear it.

I bought some stealth blades for it but haven't decided if I am ready for that or not.

I have mostly used it for recording the kids snowboarding so far and for our YouTube channel.

Receive Signal Strength Indicator

It's the signal strength reported back to the transmitter in the telemetry. My TX has an audible alert programmed for anything lower than 40%. Hit 40, says signal low. Hit 20, says signal critical. it also displays the RSSI percentage in my OSD. Gets the information from the flight controller, overlays it into the video broadcast.

edit:
and strength indicator is a bit of a misnomer.
It's actually a guesstimate made by the software based on how much error correction it has to do to, but it is a useful metric that shows how tenuous your connection may be.

Yes, the DGI controllers give you that information. I don't know about an audible alert for it though. It is displayed in the top right corner, looks similar to a cell phone signal strength, turns yellow when low, goes red when critical. If you keep pushing it will go into RTH.

Any of you drone owners want to get rid of an old model? I'm looking for pretty minimal capabilities but will follow the controller.

If its for your boat while moving definitely look for gps lock to battle wind based over wifi to controller. ESPECIALLY if you are gonna land it on the boat (ask me how I know)

I've had the mavic 2 zoom since it came out 4? years ago and use it all the time for work and fun if we are doing something neat. Zoom lens is an amazing, underrated feature. I think it's 48x which has saved a lot of crashes. Brought a phantom out on a friends 54' Hylas before that and took some good shots but getting it back was a huge stressful hassle in the wind. The mavic gps will battle the wind for you and hold position.

Don't try and catch it lol, a crash is typically new props only. This was early in my suzuki build using follow me feature at a local park. lots of trees so had to stay high, this was the most open area so not too exciting. And I was gonna show my kids I wasn't waving at my drone lol

You can have it follow you from in front of you (or any angle) which makes for some neat shots.

This one is a little closer

Alright, you got me.
Any recommendations?
DJI Mini 4 Pro. I have the Mini 3 Pro and it has what they call Active Track. Basically lock on/follow mode. I use mine from the boat all the time. Also it's not hard to land on the boat or any small space with a little practice. The key is just to turn off obstacle avoidance when you do it.

edit: Search Marketplace or other classified outlets for a Mini 3 Pro. The Mini 4 Pro is relatively new and the "latest and greatest" crowd will be wanting to upgrade. But frankly there is not a lot of difference between the two. The Mini 3 Pro has been a real blast for a basic enthusiast like myself.

$350 fair?

I am not generally an off the shelf drone fan but this popped up in my emails today. I have a plane from Fimi, the Manta, and like it. Might pick up this drone for an easy option to pack around.

I just got a cheap little one, pretty decent for $56.00:flipoff2:
The camera is tiny but takes incredible video, haven't taken a pic with it yet, still learning the basics.
It did come with three battery packs , my phone doesn't work well in the holder, between the case on it and the fact that the on/off button is right there on the side it keeps shutting the software down.
It has one touch fly key, haven't explored that yet.
My dog doesn't like!
It gets pushed off course pretty easily so take that for what it's worth.
Can you update this link?

Does my link take you there? That is weird - link looks right in my post and when I click on it, takes me to the right spot
Oh wait, you weren't talking to me :emb4:

They sent me a 50usd coupon so I jumped. $299 us, and free shipping. Will report back when I get it

Finally received my Fimi Mini3 and I am impressed at the tech and features packed into this thing for $300. I won't do a review as there are plenty out there already.

I had an epiphany this weekend. There are these off the shelf drones that are designed for taking really nice pics and videos from the air. This thing is locked in. When in forward flight and I let go the stick, it stops, here and now. Designed to be super easy to fly. Trying to fly this thing in a fun, sporty way is like trying to untangle some kittens from a basket of yarn balls - it fights what you want to do, hard. Like if you want to go to the left just push the stick over there and it will go by itself. Dont try to fly it over there. The Fimi does have a sport mode, still have to learn about that.

My basement full of planes, copters, wings, multirotor - they are all designed to be fun to fly, taking video is secondary. When in forward flight, if you want to stop here you better pull back on that stick and actually fly the damn thing. If you want to go to the left, bank it over, give it some fwd stick, a bit more throttle cuz you lost lift when you banked and when you get there, pull back on the stick to stop your forward motion and then work the sticks to stop it drifting out of position.

How's this thing working for you? Still like it?

I didn't even know there was a drone geek thread. I bought a Mini 4 Pro before taking a trip to Oregon and I was glad I had it. Got some pics I wouldn't have been able to, flew it ahead to find out if a road was too fucked up for my van (it was) and just had fun with it.

I will have to go back and read through it when I have a chance. I still need to learn all the features and functions other than take off, take pics, don't crash, land.
