Official Irate drone owners thread

I believe they are rated at 6 miles. I have never attempted to fly that far away but 2-3 miles is pretty easy to do at 67 mph.

There's something slightly unnerving with a drone out past a half mile or so. I know they have fly home and such, but it just seems a bit far...like, where's the line that the video transmission drops out.

If it does go down do you get gps cordinates or anything? I suppose you might have video all the way to the scene of the crash.
You get video and tracking. You can also use the find my drone feature that will direct you to it and make it sound an alarm.

There is a bit of wiggle room for flying low and behind small hills and trees if you are flying at 900mhz vs 5.8 GHz video.

My expensive toys output realtime gps coordinates to the goggles which are recorded so if I ever do lose a craft I will have a very good starting point to go looking. I lost a small one once and was really surprised that it was no where near where I thought it would be.

The less expensive ones generally don't fly far enough away to worry about losing them, you can see the crash site from where I am flying

Well I got my Holy STone HS7520 Drone yesterday, batteries require 5-7 hrs of charging. Let them charge overnight, this morning after breakfast I went to the school and flew it a bit. It has a beginner mode so it doesn't get too far away or too high up. It takes great pictures too.
The kit I bought came with 3 batteries, each battery lasts about 26 minutes.
I'll get a few more test flights under my belt before I unleash the beginner mode :)
Side note, it was a bit windy this morning too.

Long distance flight from a few days ago. After battery issues at the start I am really liking the plane and looking forward to pushing the distance limits. I did a bit of spirited flying in close after launch which brought the battery down, but then I slowed down for some sightseeing and it was just sipping the juice. Got about 20 min flight and still had some leftover. If I do a full on slow sightseeing flight I prob can get to 40 - 50 minutes.

Diggin' it!
Do you use a return to home feature or are you guiding it the whole way?
Problem is I don't live where there is wide open space like that, too many hills and mountains to do much long distance for me, I'm still in beginner mode on my HS 720

I do have a RTH switch and only ever hit it once to make sure it worked, and it did. With the distance/direction to home indicator in the osd it is easy to see where I need to go and is a lot more fun to fly it as a pilot, than to be a passenger

If I'm flying over my land and bush planes get in the way, who has right of way? Couple weeks ago I was about ready to throw rocks at one plane that kept circling overhead. I was trying to talk on the phone outside and was getting beyond obnoxious!

(a) Each small unmanned aircraft must yield the right of way to all aircraft, airborne vehicles, and launch and reentry vehicles. Yielding the right of way means that the small unmanned aircraft must give way to the aircraft or vehicle and may not pass over, under, or ahead of it unless well clear.

Manned aircraft ALWAYS have right-of-way over any unmanned drone.

Not sure if serious but if you are then the full size plane has the right of way
Yes I was serious.

Notice I said flying on my land. IE... I own it, so planes are trespassing. From what I've read, I own the airspace to 500ft and flight over private land cannot interfere with the enjoyment and use of the land.

I don't want to get in a pissing match over rules, regulations and laws but plain and simply if a MANNED airplane is flying 20 feet over my roof, I do not want to live the rest of my life with the knowledge that I caused the death of the people on board because I felt they were trespassing. If you are flying a drone anywhere and an occupied aircraft comes along, then just get the fuck out of the way. Is it really that hard to be a decent human being?

I didn't say anything one way or the other on what I would do with a drone. It was just a simple question.

Simple answer ........
Airspace over your land is not yours. They are not trespassing. It's spelled out pretty clearly by the FAA. And as posted above manned aircraft always has the right of way.

Fair enough it just seemed from your comments that "right of way" would influence your decision on what you would do in that situation. That's why I made those comments. I am as much "a man's home is his castle" guy as any redneck on this forum but really, I'll give up my right of way to avoid killing someone....unless they deserve it :)

The FAA has sole jurisdiction of US airspace. There is no private ownership of airspace in the US.

The FAA info I dug up with a quick search mentioned 500ft and up is considered "free airspace". Under that is land owner's and the planes cannot interfere with the enjoyment and use of the land.

No idea if the guy circling for 3+ hours was under 500ft or not. Was low enough that I could easily see him in the cab. Was loud enough I probably needed earplugs to be under 85 dB.

Reason I was asking is I was thinking about putting my drone in the air to get photos of my land to help with site planning. IE where I'm putting a 30x48 steel building I have, a house, rentals, etc. BUT I was concerned about all the planes flying over my house.
In theory, as long as I'm not above 500ft, I should be fine?

Fly your toy plane all you want if you can see it. If a larger plane is near by then bring it down.

Can't see them that far off. They aren't that high over the trees.

you own nothing above your property except that which you can reasonably use with structures. period.
If you feel that a pilot is operating in an unsafe manner, get the tail number and call the FAA tip line. Someone will remind him not to be an asshole and he'll have a bad day.
under no circumstances can you interfere with a manned aircraft in any way. That's a crime. A real one with prison time attached.

All I got out of that is I need to build something at least several hundred feet tall :homer::laughing:
