Official Cast Iron thread

I've moved to a new house, so most of my stuff is still in crates, but this is most of mine.

Yo dawg, we heard you like cast iron, so we put cast iron on your cast iron...

Love cooking on this old girl - Made in 1958 and still going strong. Not sure on the pan's date, but it's real old too...

Post a picture of the bottom of that skillet. The handle looks....off.

I have an 18 gallon cast iron kettle and a stand that has been sitting outside for +30 years as a planter.

My grandmother used it to cook in for large groups in the 60's when my mom was a kid. Then it got put in her front yard and i drilled 4 - 3/16" holes in it in the late 1980's for drainage. Plants lived in this thing until she moved into assisted living about 5 years ago and i drug it home.

it has continued to sit outside since i've had it. i have battled with how to fix the holes, and finally did it. I drilled and tapped the holes 1/4-28. i used a taper tap and only ran it in part way. i then used a piece of 1/4" steel rod and cut the threads on with a die. this gave me a threaded hole that had some taper, and a threaded stud with some taper. i ran the studs in until they got tight, cut them off both sides with an oxy-acetylene torch, and then peened what was left to tighten it up like a rivet. it has been sitting for a week and it does not leak. i am going to grind the studs flat with the surface and you will have to look really hard to find the plugs. This seemed like the best way to fix it without welding and the steel will still hold "seasoning" if it is ever used to cook again.

My plan is to sell this monster and then buy a #8 Potjie (4.75 gallons) that i can cook with.

After being used as a planter, and with a rough and pitted interior surface, what should the future owners do to it if they want to cook in it again?

Thanks!
Matt
