Oddball Heavy Equipment

Something like this perhaps? Rear Tractor Loader

Or more like a Pettibone?

More like the pettibone but built on a (possibly) prior built tractor. They were two wheel drive, big drive wheels in the back and little steers up front. You sat right in the middle of everything like the pettibone

I know what you're describing. Seemed like all the masons around here had one before the telehandlers came out. I'm looking for a picture, but not turning anything up either.

[edit] Something like this, but I swear there were versions like you describe with the big wheels in the back. Maybe that's just poor memory from fifty years ago... It would make more sense to have the weight on the bigger wheels.

Interesting, did the superstructure above the top go forward and back like on a pettibone? Did it have a forklift mast on it as well like the Pettibone in the picture above?

I've seen a fair number of tractors with a jungle gym type loader, but generally speaking if they made them purpose built the big wheels wet in the front for better off-road handling.
Something like this was common:

(Didn`t think this belonged in the "non skidsteer" thread)

This thing looks like a fuckin good time!

Bell feller buncher.

Edit... didn't realize it was a video. The potato internet here loaded it as a photo at first.

I don't think the superstructure moved, but one of the three might have had a shooting boom on it. I'm pretty sure one had a forklift mast at the end of the loader arms, but that one got turned into a drivable hydraulic power pack. I was little when he was playing with all of these, so it's a little hard to remember. I do know that two of them were identical matches though, like way better than a farmer could do. The third was a newer version of the first two

I do know where there's a fourth specimen parked though. I can get a picture from the highway I think, I'll try next time I'm in the area.

On the backward tractor forklift thing, I have a very real lust for a Case 586C. Looks like the same frame/drivetrain as my grandpa's 480LL that I grew up running. Pretty sure there's an Irate member who has one. This would be about perfect for any kind of NM backyard shenanigans I could get into.

This thread rocks.

The Menzi Muck digger pictured before is at home on 45+ degree slopes... I've seen operators do amazing shit with them on European ski slopes and rocky roadside excavations. Definitely not good for traversing terrain at any speed though.

I take it he's doing fancy pants shit. Around here whoever gets the highway contract just sends a wheeled excavator with a flail mower, no chase truck, no nothing.

Nothing puts a smile on my face like seeing that flail mower hanging over the noise barrier into a million dollar back yard when I'm on my way to work at 5am. Fuck those people.

I've run a few of those style machines. Case, Zetor, Lift-All, JCB.

The Lift-All could do probably 25-30mph. I say probably as it had a 4 speed Powershift and 2 speed low/high range.

Even in 3rd gear low range it was a handful to keep pointed straight.

The JCB was setup similar. 4wd too.

The Zetor was 4wd, and I think it was a 4 speed, maybe 3. (Been too long now to remember). Was manual trans with a clutch.

I have one of those.

There is another for sale nearby for cheap. Looks like the tires will need aired up or replaced and a starter put on it. Only $2500 though.

Oh lordy, if I was in a position to be looking/buying right now I'd snatch that up in a heartbeat. It isn't even that far away :homer:

Definitely the cheapest one I've seen. They seem to go for about 6500 in running condition

Yeah I know and it's even closer to me. I was hoping you'd snatch it up so I wouldn't be tempted to drag it home...

Still asking $38k
My buddy had same year Timbco 415 that had an 8.3L swapped in (5.9L orginal). Sold it a few years ago for around $70k. Was near $200k when new.

Alot of the new forestry equipment is beyond house costs now a days.

586C is a 580E backhoe drivetrain. Touch bigger than a 480. Yes, they are nice machines.

Was there a purpose to the Pettibone design over say like a payloader? seems like quite the mouse trap. But guys that have them love them it seems.
