Nv4500 tech

Nope pretty sure the only issues would be shift fork placement, same same with early and late sm465 top covers.

Check alignment dowels are the same.

Thanks. I have the early gm version. Your saying I can put on a later gm version top and shifter and it'll still work? Does the early to late gm gear pitch change effect any of that?

A curveball might be the 1stgen gas nv4500 top cover.... Dunno if it had a different shifter position from 2ndgens.

Clarification please.

You say "1rst gen gas"
Typicaly when "gas" is said it refers to dodge nv's becasue of the input shafts. And when 1rst/2nd/3rd is said it refers to dodge body cummins trucks.

Afaik there is no "gas/diesel" specific gm reference to nv's (except for wtf pae's goofball nv is)
Doubled down with dodge "1rst gen" did not have nv's at all.

So are you talking about early/late gm tops? dodge early tops?

Not trying to come off as a dick, just not sure exactly what you mean when you said that.

Ya sorry, I mean 92-93 dodge gas nv4500 top cover. I wonder if its shifter is further forward than all the others.

Edit: I have nv4500s from 95ish gas and 95ish diesel (dodges). Visually these are the same.

Alright, need some help as I cant find shit. Looking at using a Gen 3 5.7 Hemi with a NV4500. Can anyone point me in the right direction if this will work or if I'm limited to certain years (03-05 Ram 2500).

I think you answered your own question. The dodge gaser bell housing will be the one you need. Otherwise, an aftermarket bell is in order. Just a guess as i'm not a dodge guy. GL

Hijack/necro resurrect as this is called the "NV4500 tech" thread:flipoff2:

What is the latest/best fix for the 5th gear nut backing off? I currently have the split nut with the lock screws, she backed off towing on Sunday:homer:

What is the latest/best practice for oil for these? Reading other, less enlightened forums leads me to believe the heavy tow guys are just running synthetic 50W like the big trucks run and they are fine. Is that the consensus? Just want it to shift decent but hold up as both rigs that I have with NV4500s are used for mostly towing and longish trips. That said, it gets cold here, so...

Wat IBB sayeth?

ETA: Already sirched the IBB, fuck everywhere else. Don't know those groups of assholes:laughing:

I believe it's the original carbon-fiber syncros that are fussy about oil. The aftermarket brass/bronze... not so much.

No first-hand experience as my nv4500's are on my shop floor for future projects.

Weld the nut to the gear. Works every time, and you can cut the off if you need to disassemble it in a few years.

For fluid, the company I got my new nv4500 from requires "75W 90, GL4, Synthetic. Recommended brand is Valvoline VV975" for warranty purposes. I overfilled by a quart to help that input bearing during low speed driving (off-road).

Really? That number claims it’s only for non-synchronized transmissions and is dual GL-4 and GL-5 applications. Claims it’s also limited slip rated.

Anyone having issues with the 5th gear nut backing off the dodge 23 spline versions? Putting one together to go behind a 5.7 Hemi.

Just curious on any personal experience, don't seem to find much discussed with these on gas engines.

Does say they only work on Dodge 4x4 transmissions so makes sense
Dodge and GM had different threads and shaft size at the rear.

New main shafts are gay shit made in China and they show (mine isn't a well machined piece of art.)

For the GM. I just used the only avail. Lock nut and lots Of red loctite.

Biggest thing that is said is don't fucking lug the trans in 5th gear.

Best place for parts and advise FMPOV

I only use the GM recommended fluid, as everyone says it will smoke the synchros with regular gear oil.

Yup, they basically say you're SOL. Don't matter what you do, it's gonna happen eventually.

It''s the cummins that rattles the 5th gear nut off

My V10 just did it Sunday

I typically don’t. I’ve known about the “low-speed/high torque issue with 5th in an NV as the cause for this issue since the early’00s and have taken care not to do it since owning one the last decade. Still happened.

They buy from a place in Zumbrota Minnesota that I bought my brand new NV4500 from was $1600.00 a few years ago.

on all of them! :lmao:

Anyone tried high impact's nv4500? It's a bargain at only $2,000 if legit.

Thanks for the breadcrumb.

Had an online chat with them. Below is how they say they remediate the 5th gear issue as of May 31, 2023:

"When we build them we check the 5th gear to make sure it is tight on the shaft, if it is loose the gear is replaced and if the new gear is still loose the mainshaft is replaced. We use the nut that has 3 set screws with brass inserts under them. The nut is torqued to around 170ft lbs (any tighter it will deflect the shaft enough to cause a vibration), we use a red locktite on the nut, then we stake the brass inserts into the mainshaft and use blue locktite on the allen screw, then we stake the edge of the nut into the grove on the mainshaft.

Typically the teeth on the gear will break off or it will overheat the input before the nut will back off."
