New England trip advice end of Sept/Oct?

Grittys is awesome.
Long Trail brewery in Bridgewater VT.
I wouldn’t go out of my way to stop at Whetstone in Brattleboro.
Mt Washington auto road.

Hit me up on your way from Newport RI to Manchester VT. I’ll have some irate Maple syrup for you

Last time I was in Portland, ME the fish & chips at Gritty's was so good we went back the next day for lunch before heading back to CT. Huge portion, super crispy and seasoned well (plus good fries too). If it's anything like it was when I had it, you won't regret it. Gritty McDuff's Brew Pub | Portland, Freeport & Auburn, ME. Portland's a cool place to wander for the day, need to get back up this fall.

Ditto on spending time in Stowe, it's a great little town. There's a good swimming hole near the mountain I found last fall, was cold but worth a dip Bingham Falls Parking & Trailhead · 6524-6892 Mountain Rd, Stowe, VT 05672

for the New Haven side, Stony Creek's a nice spot to have a beer. Though I'd agree Counterweight is a better beer for craft side of things, though I haven't been to their brewery yet. Lawson's is somewhere around there too I think and pretty popular.

Treehouse can be really busy, and has 2 locations now. Think 1 is just for takeout and one is for hanging now?

IMO New Haven is going to really extend your driving time and I'm not sure it's worth it. You can find plenty of other food/breweries without tacking on another 2-4hrs that direction. Dont think you had Burlington VT, but that's in the same general area as Stowe and may be a viable alternate

CT doesn't have toll roads. Mass uses pay by plate now so be prepared for some extra BS convenience fees from the rental car company. Don't think ME or VT have tolls anywhere.
Yeah we do. Coming up 95 from NH you hit a few tolls on the way up towards Bangor

I'm in too.

Whetstone sucks.

Route 8 heading northeast from Bridgeport is a beautiful drive. You can grab it from New Haven. In East haven is the Branford Trolley museum. Worth it; the trolley cars run and they sometimes let you drive. In New London there is the Nautilus (first nuclear sub) and you can board it. If you are up that way, Woodstock Vermont is voted the most beautiful main street in the US. The Boston Science museum is the tits. Have a beer at Punter's Pub on Huntington Ave. Get a Lewisburger at Lewis's in Norwood Mass. You will not have a problem carrying in VT or NH. Check the other states.

My daughter's employer has a winter residence up that way and my father in law was born in Bar Harbor but left when he was young. My wife did a mini-vacation up there last year in Oct with my daughter and they are headed back there in a few weeks, so these are all her recommendations.

Acadia Park has a lot of neat areas such as
Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Jordan's Pond any of the nature cruises have great scenery. Shore Path (walking only) has great scenery. Walk to Bar Island at low tide. Good restaurants are Testa's, West Street Cafe, and Stadium. Carriage ride in Acadia with Carriages of Acadia is also nice.

Schoodic Point is another area of Acadia that is a little more remote.

Book any tours in advance and if you go to Caddilac Mountain you need a pass in advance.

Fort Knox and Observatory in Bucksport (about 45 minutes away) is cool. The scenery is neat and the Fort is known for ghosts/haunts if that is something of interest.

As far as Pubs, she said there are a bunch of places on Main Street in Bar Harbor and you can also have a brew and look out over the water at Jordan's Pond, but not sure how well beer would go with their famous pop-overs.

Hope that's helpful.

If you're in New Haven you can eat literally anything in the world and have it be good. The big three pizza places are Pepe's, Sally's, and Modern, with Modern being the only one I'm willing to deal with the crowd every two or three years. If you want to try a pizza place for locals lemme know, there's a few right outside of the city that imo are just as good but have a parking lot and no wait. Zeneli is right on Wooster street and is probably the best meal I've had in a while. Post up what you're in the mood for that day and more than likely I can give you a rec.

There's a bunch of breweries around here. Counter Weight is probably the best, I'm not into the craft stuff as much as my buddies but their stuff is consistently good even for my taste.

Parts of New Haven are nice, parts are really nice, and a bunch of it is a place where you dont want to get out of your car. Stay around Yale/the green/downtown and you're set. If you're into architecture at all try to walk around Yale a bit, there's some really nice stuff hiding on those buildings. There's the Peabody museum in town but I'm pretty sure they're shut down for renovations right now.

If you're coming from Newport to New Haven you'll be driving pretty close to our casinos. Even if it isn't your thing it's worth walking through foxwoods or mohegan for the experience of it. Foxwoods is one of the biggest in the world and a good spot for an overnight. I'd rather stay at one of them than any hotel around here

The covid stuff can go either way. If you wear a mask when the sign says to nobody will break your balls and that's pretty much the end of it

Any highway route I can imagine going Newport -> New Haven -> Vt will probably suck. It'll suck less if you can avoid the rush hour times
Oy! What's the locals pizza place that's just as good as Pepe's?

We had lunch at Hamilton Market in New London today and it was awesome!

Bit the bullet and waited for 20m at Frank Pepe's, that's some mighty fine pie! Definitely top 5 pizzas I've had.
Never had a white clam before and it exceeded my expectations.

Looking at onX hunt, the road going up there is a town road. The cave is on private property. Land in front of it (maybe even the entraces) are town property.

Ah I'll have to check it out. It's about 25 mins from me.

Did he weld his gate shut? Who's property is it?
Yes he welded the gate shut :mad3: The guy that welded it doesn't own any land adjoining the quarry or road. According to Vtrans it's a legal trail.
I went and talked to the town manager and the land in question is in limbo so to speak. If I had the funds I would sue them all. According to manager the land belonged to the quarry, then the finance company, apparently the finance co folded up shop and the land reverted to the town but they don't want to be responsible for it. It's fucked, I told him to sell it to me for $1.00 and I would deal with it.

What's the gate made out of? Something heavy enough to be useful for fabrication projects? I might have to perma-borrow it if I'm in the area.

I can't see anything out that way staying locked if the locals don't want it to be.

10" plus I beams, each end embedded in the ground with cement, the weld is a lock with a cover welded over it.

The quarry (cave) is actually on the towns land. Maybe we should start a "sue Dorset and the dink" fund?

Sounds like some free decent metal. :flipoff2:

New Haven is a confirmed shithole, wish I could've convinced my wife about it before we stayed here. :flipoff2:

Can you still hike up there?
Yes, we found this out when we were up there 2 weeks ago. It takes about 30 minutes to hike up. At least there wasn’t as much trash up there since the gate has been closed. I didn’t see anything welded shut but there was a combination padlock There is a map on a quiosk next to the gate, so it doesn’t look like you aren’t supposed to be up there. The abutting property owner has a tractor trail that joins the road 1/3 of the way up
A couple from the resort, that were from L.I. hiked up with us, she was really interested why I was carrying :lmao:

So what did you decide on doing/seeing?

Stayed in Newport instead of Providence, Newport was pretty nice for a total tourist trap. Would 100%go back there! Went to two of the mansions and drove around. Ate too much and drank a little.

Went to Mystic and went to through the whalers village historical site. That was pretty cool!
Then to a badass brewery on a farm, that was really weird in you had to reserve seating outside.

Then drove into New Haven, checked into hotel and had a Louis Lunch burger! Fucking awesomeness! Walked down to Frank Pepe's and had pie.

Now we're driving to Vermont and no idea what we're going to do. :smokin:

If you are going up 91, take exit 2 in VT, 9 west. Head over to Bennington, Madison brewery was good. Take 7 North to Manchester. Head from there up to Stowe would be my suggestion.
