What's new

Napa prices

Recently found that my O'Reilly's stocks Wix filters. Might be buying from there from now on. Granted... 2 oil filters & an air filter per year aren't really that much $$$.

So shittier parts are coming down the pipe that they need to get ready for.

I'm looking to do a jeep steering shaft "upgrade" for the c10, I was looking at all the options, including the Dorman replacement steering shaft just for comparison sake.
Rockauto price was around $268 (not including shipping).
Amazon Canada $395.
Napa Canada... a whopping $518 for a fucking dorman.
A borgeson that is application specific w/u-joints also happens to be $268 (not including shipping) from Summit. I never thought I'd see the day that getting a Borgeson anything to me in Canada would be the economical choice.

Alex.

Borgeson is good :smokin:

I do find that Summit has good prices. But their shipping is usually more than others.

If I'm ordering small parts that I don't need right away, I usually let my cart fill until I hit the magic $100 mark for free shipping, then hit order.

Just went to the Napa 2 blocks from my house, looking for a Torx45 and a 5/16 shallow socket.
"Out of stock on the Torx, and we don't go down to 5/16 in 3/8 drive."
OK, tards.
Drove a 1/2 mile to Oreillys, both in stock. :( I want to keep shopping Napa...

don't sell 5/16" for 3/8" drive? WUT!?

You should destroy and burn down buildings, and riot. I mean... uh... "protest peacefully". :lmao:

Screw Napa. Had too many rebuilt alternators and starters from there that were junk.

I had same issues back in 03-05. I'd just only buy their filters when Im in a pinch. They were quality but when parts were bad
receipt were needed for proof of purchase.

I stuck with Duralast Gold on electrical relate components at Autozone.

I recently moved to a new town and trying to learn the new best places to go. In Grand Junction Colorado, Napa is open 7 days a week, they close at 1 on sundays but keep the same hours as their competition the rest of the time. That Napa stocked stuff no other store in town did (1 other napa, 3 autozone's, 3 O'reilly's 2 carquests). They were the most expensive but if you needed something on a sunday they were my best bet and usually had the american version of whatever it was I wanted. They also had every counter person in town that didn't rely on the computer and it's list of inane questions to get me what I was looking for. Now where I live the Napa isn't even close to the same, they are run by the same computerized morons as the cheap stores.

For instance, the main stores might stock one or two lug studs for any specific vehicle. Napa kept cases of them, so if you wanted to put all 32 new lug studs and lug nuts on your 8 lug one ton on a sunday, Napa had me covered. You can't even do one whole corner from any other store.

RockAuto has every option available and I buy all my american made (or american owned) parts from there. I gotta be pretty hard up for parts to go to an O'reilly's or Autozone.

long time hey hey

Hard to give up the service and inventory of Napa in GJ.

Been using Factory motor parts alot lately, they kill it on batteries, filters, and ac delco stuff for prices.
Just gave smith auto a shot and they stayed open late and walked the part to my truck because I needed something immediately and couldn't get there before closing.

Been using rockauto much more as well if I have the time to get stuff ordered.

Napas prices have been getting wild lately.

Hate dealing with the morons at autozone and orielys.

But napa counter guy got all stupid with me about not having a mask on. So wont be going there for a while or ever again.

To hell with NAPA. I dont think I've walked into one in 7-8 years or better.

Walmart for OEM filters and inexpensive fluids. Online for everything else. Typically rockauto for big ticket items.

I keep a fleet of vehicles so i rarely need something "right now". Along with shelves full of spares and parts trucks.

We have a farm account at napa. It is definitely more expensive, but the counter guys there know their shit and it's the same guys every day. I dont have to worry about getting the wrong thing and things get here fast if they dont have them in stock. It just still feels like an old school small town parts store. Seems to be worth the extra money to me.

For my personal stuff and not fleet vehicles, I usually find the brands I want like gates, spicer, etc off rock auto or amazon.

My brother owns 3 Napa stores. They are generally expensive, but my brother usually price matches. I use all Napa parts, but I get all my parts at his cost, so it works out.

I do have to give Napa props for honoring their warranties.
My wife's Legacy ate another lifetime warranty rebuilt alternator, so the manager gave me a brand new replacement.
While doing a waterpump on the same car, I found a rattly timing belt idler. New set, no charge. (I'd done a Gates set a couple years before)
Some things are worth the up front price.

I got tired of replacing new Auto Zone parts over and over until I got a good one. NAPA is close to my house, and the guys gave me an account for shopping there so frequently. If it's crazy expensive for something like a US made wheel bearing, I'll call my dad, who works for a part store and use his discount. If it's something I NEED right then and there, it's NAPA.

If I have time to order I'll use Summit Racing, if there's more than $100 for free shipping, or Jegs. I've noticed Summit has been shipping a lot of my stuff right from the manufacturer which takes forever.

I been using rockauto since forever. Many options, 2 day shipping, and cheaper parts.

I'm a RockAuto fan too

It's bizarre

They get stuff to my door, all the way to the bottom of Oz, easier, quickr and cheapr than if I walked into a store and ordered it locally.

And I get a cool fridge magnet in the box

I think its like any other parts store, online shopping has killed a lot of their business. You have two choices, a store that has knowledgable employees with parts at higher prices, or lower priced parts with "my computer doesnt show that".
Used to be a profession with dedicated people who knew their shit. Now it's no better than " would you like fries with that".

Yep. Long gone are the days of the oily stainless steel countertop and the smell of burnt Maxwell House emanating amidst the lingering odor of a Camel nonfilter being smoked at that very moment by the owner in his office. The counter guy also had a cafe brown tinge to his mustache that to him, looked sexy. His name was Fred, as displayed by the embroidered patch above the cigarette pocket on the thin navy blue poly-cotton knit shirt. You could smell hypoid grease coming from somewhere very close by, but couldn't find the source as you glance left and right. A clear plastic display of "marvels mystery oil" with the handle sticking out so you could turn the gears and watch it lubricate... was unmistakably drawing you to turn it while "Fred" looked at his parts manual because the days of a digital database were yet to be born...

Ya, NAPA was expensive back then too.

Except Advance Auto and probably AutoZone and among few others.

I "order online, pick-up in store" from Advance Auto a ton. Advance Auto is very good at showing in stock or not in stock and which next nearest AAP have it. Best part is free shipping at a cool low minimum of $25.

I order a ton from RockAuto too, but have found out couple of times AAP is about as good or cheaper than them without the shipping cost. I always use RockAuto's 5% off coupon, or AAP's 25% off coupon.

I cannot disagree that NAPA is retardedly expensive!!!!!!!!!!!! Last resort!

Been a parts guy for almost 27 years...left automotive behind 15 years ago, saw the writing on the wall.

You have no idea how frustrating it is for me to walk into a parts store....shit, I went to Auto Zone yesterday to grab some vacuum line and fuel line for my Nova...kid has to take me to tha back because remembering 5/16 fuel line was too hard. As I'm cutting my own hose, he looks at the vacuum line and says " these are sure weird sizes, 5/32, 7/32..."

Ya.....bet he can roll a burrito tho...

Do you guys have a specific counter guy you deal with?

I have my main guy, a wheeler I've known for 15+ years, then the guy beside him, and there's a chick there who's pretty good too, if she can't find something in the computer, she will go raid the first guy's book stash and we can usually find it. If none of those 3 are working, I usually don't waste my time.

We are not a big shop, usually around a couple grand in parts per month. My local napa store pissed me off a couple months ago and I have not been back. I try to buy everything I can locally with the idea they could buy a vehicle from me some day so Luckily there is another parts store locally, an independent. He's a good guy and just bought the store a few years back so he is trying to make a run at it. Because of his newness he keeps less parts in stock, so often times I have to wait a day. If I have to have it I will go to the next town over to the oriellys store.

Napa counter guys are working on commission with bonus levels, business discount will get you maybe 30%.

I thought (assumed) this was the case, but I bought 10 (yes ten) of their 800 CCA Group 24 Marine/RV batteries. The counter monkeys were more interested in answering the phone, than helping folks in the store, should add that to the pet peeve thread. After being ignored by a couple guys, someone finally asks what I needed, I told them, and confirmed, yes I needed 10, no one was ignoring me anymore, but one of the guys that decided to answer the phone instead of help me, said to the guy actually helping me, 'too bad we don't work on commission." That stuck with me, because I always assumed they did.

I went to NAPA to get brake hoses for the W250, wanting to get decent parts, I got the Napa Gold line, "Made in China" on all 3 boxes, I guess everything is nowadays.

is someone chopping onions? :frown:

this is why i try to still go to napa

its fun to see freds face when you tell him the chevy parts are for a toyota

i did buy my last oil change online tho, its just so damn easy

and then in my town theres like a weird local knock off napa (S and P auto supply) that i try to give some business to as well

used to hit strictly Napa and another local shop with the old timers who knew their stuff. It was the only option when owning Scouts, the other shops just didn't have the cross references or willingness to help.

Haven't been to a NAPA in 10+ years. Prices drove me out. Stopped by the other day for a foot of 1/4" fuel line for a moped - they didn't have any, somehow. Over to Oreiley across the street

A few years ago I was in a napa for a simple part for a mid 90s vortec. Guy said 'Not in stock, I can order it.' I thought, 'so can I', walked out, and have been using rock auto or amazon ever since. I can choose from OEM or knockoff, and it comes right to my door.

And don’t forget after 430ish. Beers are cracked and hidden under the counter. Sneaking sips between customers. 5pm rolls around and it’s time to close the doors and thats when the regular customers show up with a 12 pack in hand. Roll the back door up, crank the swamp cooler down, the counter man is doing day ends and counting the cash box, he’ll be back there in a minute.

Every time I drive by the old warehouse, I sure miss those nights. I wish I would’ve known that era was coming to an end. :frown:

There's a problem when I can buy premium parts from Rock Auto and pay a good chunk of change to have it shipped to my door for less than economy grade parts from the local shop with a 40% discount. If I need it faster I type the part number into Amazon and pay a bit more.

There's a few small speciality shops that are good shit for 4x4 parts, batteries, tires etc. I'll continue supporting those guys.

I'm not seeing what is so much more at napa.

I called yesterday for a 96 4runner radiator, orielleys and napa were within $5 of each other. I went with orielley incase it ever fails and I'm out of town.
