What's new

My shitbox needs a new engine

Stop using shitty gasoline-

but why though?
betty don't got deep enough rear gears for that

100hp & 100lbft in Betty

I want a not a4ld in my ranger. Should just scrap that iron turd for a 2.3 duratech but I’m too invested too quit now.

so get a m5od outta a later ranger, the 2.5 bell is the same as the 2.3

modular pattern manuals are scarce

Don’t want a manual, 4r44 is just a a4ld with turd polish.

4r70w or the 6 speed auto from an explorer would be tits.

As for Jasper, the A4LD I yanked from my Ranger had a Jasper tag on it, gave at least 12 years of reasonably reliable service.

I don’t think it ever had overdrive in my possession starting in 2016, upon receipt, I found the plugs for the torque converter clutch and overdrive solenoid disconnected, I plugged them back in the torque converter solenoid stuck on lock a couple of times once and then never again. The only trouble I had was it puking fluid on long trips. I could do 70-80 miles an hour for hours fine but as soon as I would stop or slow down, it would puke.

IMHO, either a garbage freight 10 hp, 3-71 Detroit, Or a Wright R-3350 will do. Those have the correct noise levels for your (insert application here)!

A 3.0 I doubt anyone could screw up.
There's some nuances but nothing crazy..

Edit: Realized that link is 20yr old and lord knows how much longer it has to last so here's a pdf

I'd trust a JY takeout more than a reman
I'd throw a bearing and seal kit in at a 100k junkyard engine before I bought a reman. Too bad I didn't do that when I did the Ranger but that was 5 fucking years ago and I had grand plans of getting it running that week.

The local junkyard had a 3.0 for a Tempo, or Probe or some 1990ish car for $125 on car-part, can't find it now though. :shaking:

bought a 454 long block from powertrain. The one in my c60 decided one of the valve seats wanted to take a ride on top of the piston. When I called them to order I told the guy 84 k30. That’s what the seat sucker was out of. I figured that way I’d get a four bolt main engine. All was good until he said, I want the serial number from the truck for the one year warranty. I explained the situation to him saying I’ll get you the serial number from the c60. He went full tilt. No fucking way we are warranting the engine if it isn’t going in the exact vehicle the engine is supposed to fit. I needed my dump truck fixed asap. So I told him I don’t give a fuck about the warranty. Sell me the engine for an 84 k30 in the 454 flavor. And I will return that exact 454 4 bolt core. He said ok but the paperwork is gonna say no warranty stamped all over it. I said take my fucking money and put that bitch on a truck headed my way. The nice 2 bolt main 454 is still being flogged in the non warranted engine bay more than a year later. Yes sir, I’ll send you the exact same motor because serial numbers and such. :mad3:

Punched in 1992 Taurus and did even better than $125

I had a good experience with sandjengines.com but it was just an old ford 400 going into my 78 F150. Way cheaper than having someone rebuild it for me ($2400 to my door), shipped fast, customer service answered all my questions. The reman had an “updated” timing set (not nylon as what came stock) and claim other updates/improvements over stock. I plan on going through them again to put a basic 302 in a 67 Bronco.

That is not what I would call reliable

So I did some more research and didn't like what I saw online about Fraser.

It doesn't look like they are a rebuilder, just a reseller who buys the lowest cost crap available.

Went with Powertrain products (Rebuilt & Remanufactured Engines by Powertrain Products) and it is ~$2600 to my door.

Yea, I probably could have done it cheaper, but it would have cost me a lot more time, so I call it a wash.

Now to hit up amazon et al for gaskets and consumables.
