This is another of my projects.

This was my first Jeep. I bought it from a friend in about... 1998ish.
Was a "CJ" that had been rebuilt with a YJ tub- 4.2, T176, D300, AMC 20/ D30.
I wish I had photos of it because my 23YO self fell deeply in love with Jeeps because of , or perhaps, IN SPITE OF, this Jeep.
I drove it "stock" for a bit, until it caught fire sometime in summer of the first year I had it.
The shop that "restored it" had routed the main wiring harness in such a manner that it rubbed on the clutch pedal, and eventually, the main power feed to the interior rubbed through and shorted out on the clutch pedal. While my Dad was driving it. He was everything but amused.
I bought a painless harness, and a new cam, and an Offenhauser dual plane intake, and a bunch of other shit I needed to fix the wiring.
Took me most of the summer, but I got it all squared away and back on the road in late autumn. Drove it all winter. Put a plow on it. Etc.

The next summer I decided I was going to V8 swap it.
And install a NP435.
So I sold the original power plant/ transmission, and swapped a Ford 302 and NP435 into it.
This was my first engine swap, and my first time welding, etc. It was quite the project, and the learning curve was steep.

This thing was an ANIMAL with the new V8. Enjoyed it for another two or three years before some kid offered me twice what I paid for it, and I ... did the thing. Deeply regretted it.

FFWD to spring of 2006- I'd been in touch with the kid all the while, and he was ready to sell.
Unfortunately he had entrusted the Jeep to a friend of his for storage, and the friend had "kept the motor oiled" by beating it around the woods.
The tub was ok, the engine had a tick, the clutch was slipping, and the frame had cracked/ rusted through. I paid him less than I originally bought it for.

Pics from when I got it back...

Brought it home, stripped it down, and... parted it out. Keeping the tub, grill, hood, title, and some other parts.

I had started another version of this "rebuild" on the other site. I was going to stretch it, tons, links, atlas, etc.
For reasons I don't recall (ADHD) I quit on that project too.
The tub languished on a trailer under a tarp for several MANY (12?) years.

FFWD to March of 2018.
A buddy was parting out a YJ build. He got into a fight with the buyer and basically told him to engage in intercourse with a rolling donut, or something.
He was so tired of dealing with idiots on the internet that he called me, and arranged to dump last remaining part, the rolling chassis, in my yard...

This was the scion for the S'Crappy Rebuild.

The chassis came with a 14bolt rear, converted to discs.
The front is a low pinion D44, w/ Reid Knuckles, and behind the axle high steer arms.
My buddy had stretched the wheelbase a bit 103? IDK.
Steering box needs some revision...

I needed an Engine. My coworker gave me a Chevy 4.3. Check

I needed a Trans/ T-case. buddy sold me a SM465/ NP208. Check.

A few years passed. (Shut up, it's a theme!)

Spring of 2020 I found myself with some time on my hands.

Mounted the engine / trans in the chassis.

And for the first time since 2008? the tub went back on a chassis.

Ordered JBA stainless headers, TBI wiring harness, Goatbuilt Fuel Cell.

A few other friends pitched in with some other stuff - power steering pump, shocks, etc. (Thanks guys!)

The original motor mounting brackets left a bit to be desired, so I ordered some RuffStuff universal SBC mounts, plated the frame, and got that all painted. Because turd polish.

Cleaned out the years of "Stuff", and mocked up the fuel cell.

Slapped some YJ fenders, a CJ hood and Grill, and stood back...

Hmm. This needs bigger tires.

March 2021... It's Spring, let's be "productive" (Avoid doing shit I should be doing).

Let's tune up a jeep that doesn't run or drive!

The TBI needed some love too.

Rebuilt that, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, installed a new water pump, and power steering pump (again, thanks to my friends for the parts)
Vacuumed up all the mouse stuff.

Time passes... I think I ignored this Jeep for the past two years.
I've been working on a Dumpsterfire XJ, and my Chevy K20, so... give me a break.

I recently went on a ride along wheeling with my neighbor.

Freshly motivated, I'm back at it.

This past weekend I pulled the transmission, replaced the rear main seal, oil pan gasket, and installed new flywheel, clutch, and then my wife and I reinstalled the transmission.
I provided the cursing, she ran the come-along.

I had a D300 in the shop, so I stripped the input shaft out of that so I could mock it up behind the SM465 (32 spline output shaft didn't mesh well with the 23 spline input of the D300)

Then I poked around and discovered that I have driveshafts that SHOULD work...

I also sanded down and painted the original dash panel.

Weekend report-

Pros:
  • installed 32 spline input and new bearing in T-case.
  • changed oil filter and filled engine with oil.
  • built battery cables.
  • connected battery/ engine/ starter and cranked it over for the first time.
  • installed power steering pulley, water pump pulley, and fan.
  • mentally planned the implementation of the revised front frame rails.

Cons:
- need billet clocking spacer ring to accommodate the new input shaft. :shaking: (I will have 1/4 the cost of the NWF "Ecobox Integrated" in the damn clocking ring/ input... but no 12 week lead time SIGH)

The couple of Astro boxes I have messed with had a spacer inside to limit the piston travel. The easiest way I know to have a look see is to take the pitman shaft out the top. One side is basically a bent wire, and the other side is the cap with some nubs on it. Turning radius was horrendous.

I've never heard of that.... interesting. I'll have to check. thanks
