My deer rifles always been a good ol' marlin in .35 rem. The price has gone through the roof and it's hard to get now. I do reload it but .35 bullets and brass are also not that popular so I need a change.

I currently have a 30-06 but I don't think I need to go that heavy for whitetail. I also have a 260 Remington but that's set up for long range not sub 100 yard shots.

I'm debating .243, or 6.5x55 but I'm open to suggestions. Not interested in 30-30 though.

Load your ought six with some bullets designed to expand at 30-30 velocities, load them as such

Everybody oughtta have a 243. Howa mini in a grendel wouldnt be bad. 223 with a half decent bullet will knock the stuffin out of a deer just as well as anything else.....

Not sure about NY but I know .223 isn't a legal deer hunting caliber in CT. Minimum for us is .243

I bounce between my old 30-06 and my .308. Typical distance is 200 yards or less up on my hill where others reach out to around 300 yards hunting there. I hunt mostly with my .308

The caliber's they use are .308, 6.5 creedmore, .243 and a 7mm08. I may be missing one in there.

The guy with the 7mm08 is thinking about hanging to a .308 as he complains about 7mm08 ammo.

When I hunt in the woods I typically will use my 30-06 carbine as it’s a light gun and very easy to maneuver around.

I’d like to get a 6.5 creedmore and try it out a year or too.

Why would you go for another scarce round like 6.5x55 when you already have a .35 rem you cant find amm9 for? You have a .260, why not just buy a deer gun in .260? Or if youre hell bent on a similar cartridge why not a 6.5cm since its nearly identical and you can find ammo everywhere for it.

If not those Id go with .243.

You can find 6.5x55 everywhere. Brass and bullets too. I could get another 260 I already have dies for it. 6.5 man bun doesn't tickle my fancy. I think I may look into .243

No argument that ammo for the creedmor is easy to find. But the 6.5x55 is pretty easy to round up ammo and brass for as well

tikka has been sending out some 243's with a 1:8" twist if that means anything to you. Though I think a 6 creedmore is goona take off before long

6ARC could be a badass lil round as well.....
Your talking about calibers that are designed to poke out past 400+ yards. I'm needing 100 yards max and good performance sub 20ish yards. My last deer I shot at 7 yards. He about sniffed my boot.

Why would it take off? Lower barrel life than 243 and for what purpose?

Ok. Then 257 Roberts it is. Or 44 magnum.

I've havent killed much past 100 yards. Have still shot rocks at 1500 with the 243, because fuck yea!!:grinpimp:

Last buck I shot was with a 6.5grendel. Maybe 80yrds. For a slow tiny round it kicked ass. I was impressed. 6arc is a bit more velocity. I will probly swap one of those barrels onto my grenfel soon as I burn up all the factory ammo I have for it.

Fuck it
Not even close to the same scenario

Is a 6.5 creedmore more or less a 260 with a shorter case, allowing a longer bullet in a short action. Thus making factories use a faster twist barrel?

I dont see why the 243/6CM will be any different

30-30?

I'd say 260 with shorter setup to keep the ammo the same.

6Arc is a cool round but ammo is real hard to find right now so I'd skip that.

243 would still be my pick but it's a 400+ yard round as well.

If you need 35 rem components, brass & projectiles, just let me know in a pm.

If you want a new rifle in a different caliber, go get one. No need to hem and haw over it.

Pm coming your way!

I'm not hemming and hawing, just making a little conversation. It's not like there's a right or wrong answer that's going to make a catastrophic difference.

I wasnt aware it was that available. Anymore I only haunt 2 or 3 lgs' and 6.5x55 isnt something Ive seen much of, same goes for .260 but youre set reload for it and i know the components are common.

6.5cm has all kinds of factory target and hunting rounds everywhere. Same with .243. It seemed like you were looking for easy available ammo.

Im not pushing either. I have roughly 50ish deer guns in .243, .3030, .35 rem, 6.5 swede(or 55), .32 win, .25&30-06, 6.5cm,7mm08, 8mm mauser, and honestly I cant even remember the rest.

I havent used most. Ive generally used the same 2 rifles since I was 12, but when I come across someone selling grandads really nice old sporterized mauser or carcano or whatever old gun for a steal, i tend to buy it. Its been a sickness for about 30 years.
