What's new

Motortrend!

The new motor trend show with Derrick is good if you liked his YouTube show. It's basically exact the same with better production value. :smokin:

My wife came in when I was watching the MT version and asked what was wrong with him. It seemed like he tried to fit all of his catch phrases in a shorter format. I'm hoping it settles in, but I prefer his YT version.

Im glad they didnt make him stop saying sparkolators or bring the thunder and shit like that. It would be funny if they used subtitles.

The funny part is that I think he genuinely uses that verbiage day to day. I went up to his place before he moved to buy the GT500 and he was definitely the same person off camera as on. Seemed like a really good guy

He's also not the one editing the show for MT, entirely possible that he's saying the normal amount and they chop it up to catch all of em.

Watched the newest HRG and saw that Lucky had covid again.

A quick internet search shows the Savoy they were working on was done back in August.

The opening weeks were spent dealing with COVID-19. First, Lucky was infected and missed the first ten days of the build. He would return after the required quarantine period, only to have the pandemic rear its ugly head at the start of week three. Several members of the cast and crew, including Alex and Dennis, tested positive for COVID-19. Fortunately, the symptoms were mild, but the set was shut down, forcing the group to move off-site. And Lucky was once again sidelined when the rest of the group got sick, healthy but he was unable to contribute. Work continued in what became known as Quarantine Garage, with only the infected members allowed to work together.

The lack of tools and time began to take its toll on the crew, doubting they were going to meet the deadline that was just two weeks away. It looked bleak until their luck turned around when Gregg Petersen, longtime friend of Dennis, got locked out of a family cruise when he, too, tested positive for COVID-19. Hailing from Orange County, just an hour south of the MotorTrend headquarters, Gregg had two weeks cleared on his schedule, and he was legally allowed to mix with the other infected team members. The bonus: Gregg is well-versed at working with sheetmetal, and he jumped right in building wheel tubs, floors, and other interior panels.

Alex showed some of the work her Dad did off site on her YouTube channel. They knocked out a sweet build quickly.

I liked that they showed some actual fabrication tech with her dad on set. I know it's a really broad overview of building a frame jig but it was more hardcore race car insight than I've seen on any show like that.

There's more actual tech in the show now. Who new bringing a girl on-board would bring in more tech?

As much as I liked the Lucky-Tony duo, Alex is actually making the show better and proving that she's not a token "we have to put a girl in everything" hire.

Alex made the show way better and her and lucky have great chemistry it’s hilarious . She’s sharper than most techs I meet these days . Tony was not the most knowledgeable or that good at turning wrenches etc imho he’s a definite car guy and fun but there builds weren’t at the caliber Alex brought to it with her tuning skills and such alone . Lucky is awesome one of those guys you can tell you could just talk to and have a good time .

Wow, watching latest Finnegan Garage and he said Newburn quit. Interesting. I wonder if he will find a new sidekick.

What a crazy mess.

Newburn didn't like being groomed to be the next semi-famous host?

Motor trend reminds me of small circuit wrestling. Yeah, it is bigger than backyard but it sure isn't full Hollywood pros

He said newburn quit the channel to go be with his family. I don't recall exactly how far away but it was far enough away from Finnegan that he wouldn't commute but stay away from them for weeks at a time.

Just part of what makes it all weird. Where do they find all these people and how little do they pay ?

If it was big time money, everybody would be down for a few weeks of hassle. Motor trend just can't get it right

Newburn? I forget which one his is. Is he the one that acted like a huge pussy every time Finnegan drove a car?

Lets make this real simple. Are we talking about the taller fat guy or the shorter fat guy?

Finnegan said Newburn left Finnegan's Garage Youtube channel and is TBD for on the next season of FWF on Motortrend. Those are 2 different deals. I can't imagine FG on youtube paid that well for the hours he worked. Motortrend might be a different story (probably not).

MT probably has more opportunity for advancement.

I dunno. It's interesting to see how many MT people either have side youtube channels or have left for youtube exclusively.

Youtube has a few people making bigger money (with higher risk) than what I'd guess top paid MT hosts make. Not many Cleetus's out there, but he's doing better (or has way more debt) than Finnegan.

Cletus bought a business that's proven to work mostly just fine but be marginal on its own. He then promotes the shit out of it by entertaining on Youtube and other platforms.

Finnegan (and Fred, and Tony for that matter) on the other hand has a money burner that will never be a viable or even break-even business on its own. The entertainment side has a lot more to make up for.

I think mt is definitely the long play getting your name out to a larger audience. YT you can probably make more per episode but you will put in more time and effort in for that extra buck so not sure per hour of 'work' if it pencils out in the beginning.

I forget who said it, might have been Finnegan but they make ten times more money on merch than they do on YT money. I think he said 3-5 dollars per item from the store.

They are clothing companies that make videos. It's all about merch sales.
