Mandela Effect Thread

The Mandela Effect is ******ed. People never remember inconsequential **** 100% accurately, your brain naturally fills in gaps with things it thinks make the most sense whether or not that's the reality. It's why there's so much emphasis in interviewing people directly after events because that's when you're getting the most accurate memories before people forget things and their brain starts remembering things differently.

I agree with this. Also, many of the things mentioned I would never even try to remember. Like what Darth said to his son. In the case of Gremlins or bears, why would anybody assume someone saw those movies? (I didn’t)

Plus, Nobody gives a **** about spelling.

In the case of the Queen song, definitely there is a “of the world” in some part of the song. Why would I care if it was the last line?

But the most interesting thing is Mendella being killed in jail. I remember him gettting out and screwing up the country. Never met anybody that said he was killed.

I think the bootleg products theory is solid and can explain some of this. My daughter is crazy about the Berenstain bears so we have lots of books on the shelf new and old. As far as I can tell it's been spelled stain from the 80's copyright to the current Amazon cartoon. I'd say that one is a good example of misspelled knock offs.

So where's your pic of a misspelled knockoff?

You're also a **** :flipoff2:

Without googling the video:

Rodney King said:
"Can't we all just get along?"
"Can't we all get along?"
"Why can't we just get along?"

Or ?

C3PO
What color is he? What color are his legs?

This one is easy - it was always one silver and one gold. There are set pictures that show this. But - Between film quality at the time and that most of us watched the moved on a crappy old tv off a VHS that had been run through the machine one too many times it kinda blended in where you couldn't tell

The real mandela effect is people forgetting how bad of quality video we had even 10-15 years ago.

I always thought c3po was polished brass top to bottom (or whatever space age material they want to call it in a movie) and the different tones where just lighting and shadows.
Yeah, video quality has come a long way. At one time you thought it was pretty good if 720p was available on youtube, now people get all butt hurt if a video isn't available in 2 or 4k.

Try to watch a football game from the 80's..

I think that when discussing the Mandela Effect it also bears mentioning that like 80% of the examples the average person comes up with are usually **** that gets consistently changed over time for marketing purposes.

Marketing geniuses adjust logos and brand names so often you don't notice it, but when large changes over time are pointed out it's supposed to be some mind blowing conspiracy. Whatever.

Then there's **** like 2 or 3 people in this thread calling Jif peanut butter "JIFF" because one dude accidentally fat fingered his keyboard and didn't notice before he posted.
Stupid Effect is stupid.

I always think about those Eastern taverns back in the day with the 19" TV up in a corner behind the bar and guys glued to a hockey game. No ****ing way you could follow the puck, I guess they just listened to that 3" paper cone speaker for what was happening.

Then there is the Mandelas wife effect. Mine can hardly ever tell a story concisely and even more rarely correctly, then gets pissed when I cut her off. D'oh!:homer::laughing:

I always wonder if the announcers are calling the game correctly when the puck is getting passed around, that's gotta be the hardest sport to call.

I think if they get the name wrong, they just keep going cause by the time you've corrected yourself you've missed three calls.

I just learned recently that there was no author named "Franklin W. Dixon"; the Hardy Boys books were all written by a group of different people who just cranked them out non-stop. Same thing for Nancy Drew.
My kid is into some talking cat book series that's the same way. 🤮

Reviving this thread as I saw a new one.

Richard Simmons, did he wear a headband?

Can't find any pictures of him sporting a headband even though I swear he did.

Here's where it gets weird, search for people dressing up like Richard Simmons from the 80's, they're all wearing a headband.

Look on Amazon for a Richard Simmons costume: No headband

I am well aware of phenomena related to memories. You're correct in that our minds do not store "the details" and will make up the details when we recall the memory. E.g. if you think of a tree from your childhood that you used to climb, your mind does not store the shape of the leaves, it only stores the tree and that it had leaves. Yet when you recall the memory, your mind will make up the shape based on what you know about the tree (e.g. a maple leaf vs apple tree leaf). Next, anytime we revisit a memory, we alter it slightly before "putting it back"; thus, over time a memory can be significantly changed from what really happened. (e.g. my childhood friend that remembers my dad's Bronco being orange when it was actually yellow).

However, I find it highly unusual that so many people would alter their memories or "fill in the gaps" in effectively the same way. Almost everyone I ask will tell me Queen's We are the Champions ends with "... of the world".

I find the Mandela Effect to be an interesting topic and have yet to see any plausible explanation. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps we are "programmed" by our entertainment (TV's, Movies, Songs, Magazines, etc...) more than we realize.

While I know there are piles of things that I know used to be that the Internet says is bull**** now (fruit of the loom cornucopia for instance) I don't believe I've ever seen him in a head band. His hair was always neatly afro'd and a headband would have screwed it up.

That one and probably the actual Nelson Mandela's death thing are the only two that really really bother me because I'm SURE I remember both. The others, not so much.
