Labor cost to build these bumpers

I would say it's the exact opposite. If the guy doesn't have all the fancy tools, then your buddy should know that it is going to take longer, so costs go up.

I invested money into tools so I can do things faster, making it cheaper for the customer, not more expensive.
As someone who has owned businesses in multiple industries, I think you’re absolutely back ass words. I bought all the cool tools and spent all the big money to do a faster that doesn’t make the job cheaper. It means I can take on more work and make more profit because I can do it faster. However, you have to decide what a good baseline is because if I can pay a shop with a plasma on a CNC table $200 an hour, but it only takes them four hours. Why would I pay some jack ass with an angle grinder $100 an hour when it’s gonna take him 15. That makes zero fucking sense to me but that’s just our opinions and you do things the way you wanna do them I do things away I want to and I’m happy with my results.

Tech Tim so I mean I’m really confused on your train of thought of why should I pay a guy with inferior tools more money to do it in his backyard and I could pay the shop to do it on the clock? Once again, side work is side work for a reason it’s because it’s cheaper that’s why people ask guys in the trade industry to do it on the side after work. Do you want to come fix my whatever the fuck because they are looking for a deal not hey I know you’re gonna charge me another $200 versus what your company will so could you come do it on the side. And yes, I know there’s people myself included that don’t need the money time is way more valuable to me if you want me to do it after hours or on the weekend it’s gonna cost more. But we say so to whoever’s asking

Thought I explained that already a buddy took his bronco to a guy. I don’t know where the confusion is on that but that’s what happened. I’m just interested in hearing other peoples opinions and then arguing with them to get them excited.

See above.
I was implying that this thread is really about you and your bronco and how you feel screwed, but that appears to have gone over your head.

now if there’s a guy that has all the sweet tools like CNC plasma, etc. that’s a different story but....

On a one off part, it's only marginally faster to draw all the pieces in CAD, and you still need to make cardboard templates. Custom work is custom work and takes time. The CNC tooling only really pays off if you're making more than one part.

This sounds more like a class on how to be an adult and make adult financial decisions lol.

Bottom line if you as an adult enter into a deal with another adult, being ambiguous is gonna be a mother fucker in the duration of your deal. Whatever the deal is. It would be hard convincing me that there was ever clarity in this deal, 3 months for a bumper

He shouldn't be bitter, he said here do this...catch ya on the flip side with some $$$ when your done. Plus wtf...paying someone money , doing the leg work for the front bumper, getting consumables and helping the guy mock shit up... wtf? Lol. If I'm paying you and you ain't my beer buddy , I'm paying you to do 100% of the work.

His lesson isn't about what a bumper should cost, the lesson is be black and white with your dealings. Any shade tree hack that doesn't have an ounce of integrity can see idiots like your bud coming a mile away$$$$$.

You should have helped your buddy on a weekend , drank beers and just knocked those bumpers out for cost of material and consumables. You do have a welder and grinder right ?

Snoop dogg i agree with you 100%. And nope money was never ever discussed which like you and everyone else I think is dumb.

My buddy lives about 20 hours from me. Otherwise I would’ve helped.

And how buddy buddy this deal was, I can’t tell you other than what I’ve already said.

Ok ill cut you some slack lol, 20hrs a little far.

Sorry if you don't get it HL.

You've already covered that the biggest mistake in this whole scenario was not setting an hourly wage and some expectations from the beginning and then check up on progress (including costs incurred) as the job goes on.

That's where it all went sideways. Everything else is just people voicing their opinions on the aftermath. You are not beholden to anyones opinion. Don't like their opinion, ignore it.

I've been avoiding commenting on this shit show of a weird fucking post but you contradicted yourself bad in this one. You're paying for the finished product and that's it, bottom line, doesn't matter how they get there. A plasma table and brick and mortar shop doesn't make a fabricator, the finished product they put out does. There are many guys on here that can put out nicer shit than I can with basic tools under a tarp in their driveway than I do with my cnc plasma and tens of thousands in welders and fab tools sitting in my garage.

Boils down to this:

You know roughly what a bumper costs.
You know what your buddy was asking for was a one-off.
You know the capabilities (roughly) of the dude who was doing the work.

Why on earth wouldn't your buddy get a fixed "quote" for the final product? This is how a typical fab shop would do it. We have several welding/fabrication shops around here. You want a gooseneck plate built/installed? Fixed price. (~$400) Want a bale stabber build for your farm truck and installed? Fixed price. (~$800) Want a rear bumper build? Fixed price. (~$500). They don't care the make, model, or what extra they have to do.

In manufacturing it's the same way. Need a custom jig built? Get bid, fixed price regardless if they finish it in 10 hours or 1000. The way you make your money on jobs like this is, when you get good enough, you end up working 1/2 the time for the same fixed rate than you started. Open-ended hourly rates are for when the start/end points are fuzzy (having to make engineering judgements on the fly, vague instructions, repair of equipment where the problem is not evident).

So, lesson learned? If your buddy would have gotten a hard number (say, $1000/front and $600/rear for arguments sake) when he started there'd be no reason to complain. Sometimes lessons are expensive.

honestly i have no idea. lol. this went way farther than i thought it would or really cared for it to. who woulda thought guys would get this worked up over something that doesnt affect them.

It was vague enough that we could all project our own bullshit into the situation. If all of the details of the deal were laid out at the start there would have been little drama and the thread would have died in hours.
i honestly didnt expect much response but goddamn if i wasnt wrong lol. people get wound the fuck up over this.
