LA bomb squad truck blew up

I always thought that they were half spheres with the top open to redirect the forces, not actually contain them.

building a pressure vessel to fully contain an explosion of unknown materials seems like a bad idea to me.
but I'm not an expert.

No shit. What kind of clown world puts a unknown explosive in a containment device to detonate? Idiots everywhere. Cart that shit out to a quarry and set it off.

apparently it was only 10lbs.

I laughed when they were all "the truck is designed to handle 15 lbs"
15lbs of what exactly?

there's a pretty big difference between 15 lbs of black powder, or 15 lbs of a high order explosive.
perhaps we should find a better rating system for your bomb disposal unit?

makes me wonder what kind of shit is going on lately.

And, these guys don't probably don't even know the placarding that they are supposed to be able to enforce.

I would have spilled my Keystone chuckling but I ain't into that shit yet . ... :flipoff2::flipoff2::flipoff2:

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Military officials are working to recover high powered explosives that vanished from a Southern California installation, according to ABC 10News' sources with close military ties.
The explosives disappeared from the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base, and now a reward is being offered for their discovery, sources told ABC 10News.

Sources report that approximately 10 pounds of Composition C-4 disappeared during a long training exercise two weeks ago. They also believe the manufactured plastic explosives may have been stolen.

The unit's commanding officer is considering extending the training exercise until the explosives are found, sources said. They also confirm the commanding officer messaged subordinate commands about a monetary reward for any information leading to the discovery of the C-4.
Just saying

“We have to make it clear: South Central was bombed by the Los Angeles Police Department,” Alfredo Gama, president of the Central Alameda Neighborhood Council, said during the Friday night demonstration. “We want to know, who made that call.”

The protesters demanded to know whether LAPD would have made the same call to detonate homemade fireworks already deemed unstable in a more affluent neighborhood.

“Would they have made that call if we were in Santa Monica,” Gama said.

Martha Sanchez, a marriage and family therapist, is on the South Central Neighborhood Council. She said the blast shook her home while she was in the middle of a therapy session.

“I’m so, so mad. So disgusted,” she said. “And I was screaming in front of my patient, because I was terrorized.”

The residents said they wanted criminal charges filed against LAPD and for 20% of the department’s budget immediately directed to the victims.

“”Our house was destroyed, and there’s some valuable things inside that’s hard to recover,” Jovana Martinez, a victim, said. “It’s going to take a while to get that back.”

So far, her family has been forced to stay at two different evacuations since their home is unlivable, a reality made even more difficult since her brother has autism and her father is awaiting surgery. After the surgery, he will need a permanent place to recover.

“They didn’t ask for this,” one activist said.

Earlier on Friday, 45 agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives descended on the neighborhood to process the roughly three-block debris field. LAPD asked the public to be patient as the investigation continued.

“The criminals, as they call them, were keeping it safer than they were,” Gama said.

super awesome.

Nobody said criminals are smart......

What else could they have packed 10lbs of in a pipe that would be capable of blowing a 500lb containment cover 3-4 blocks away?
It didn't need to be a high explosive, it just needed to produce a lot of gas.

They put it in a pressure vessel and didn't know what it was. It could have been slow burning rocket fuel.

Putting it in the giant steel ball is what made it a giant explosion.

No way that it's a coincidence...... 10lbs of C-4 would definitely do the kind of damage we saw in those videos.
But it would have been better to light the c4 on fire and let it burn

my dad and 2 uncles were combat engineers and said they used that shit to heat their food. Not sure if old wives tale or not

C4 is harmless without blast cap/detonation.

I played with it when I was a student worker for TEEX-UXO. Kind of unimpressive verse the other shit I saw.

What did they use to detonate the pipe bomb, explosives? Maybe those idiots put a bit to much in with the pipe bomb.

Exactly.

I remember an equation from my youth that says something about burn rate having to do with pressure cubed.

This is why steel pipe bombs are so much more dangerous than PVC ones. Not only do you build more pressure but you burn more of the propellant which builds yet more pressure.

I remember those forums. Much knowledge gained. I checked one I used to read and was surprised to see it still exists.

If he was making fireworks I'd put my bet on it being 10lb of flash.

apparently they do make on-site disposal units

This repeat detonation TCV is on the cutting edge of today’s bomb disposal technology. It features a unitary solid-poured cast manganese alloy steel chamber body sealed by a solid steel door secured and sealed by four remotely operable hydraulic expanding interlocks.

The HD-5 chamber is designed to work seamlessly with most existing EOD robots or manually by a single operator when applicable. It can fit through most standard three-foot (91.4 cm) doorways. It can be easily transported to the scene of an incident or suspected device and even taken on most commercial freight elevators that will support its weight. Importantly, the HD-5 provides military and law enforcement personnel the benefits of both enhanced performance and safety benefits, while being significantly less costly than alternative systems, many of which are intended primarily for the transport of suspicious packages, and not their actual destruction by controlled detonation.

Why is the HD-5 superior? Its manganese alloy steel chamber becomes harder and tougher with every detonation, thus maintaining the chamber’s integrity in repeated use. Its compact size and relatively lighter weight means increased mobility and faster deployment than the competition. This means significant savings both in the cost of initial purchase and subsequent post-detonation maintenance, because the HD-5 is designed to be tough enough to be re-used again and again, detonation after detonation.

apparently they do make on-site disposal units

After spending most of the budget buying and pimping out the transport truck with bling polished aluminum everything and fancy LED strobe lights they only had enough left to buy the Chinese knockoff containment unit. Manganese.... Chiganese.... same thing, no?

Yeah, you put 15 lbs of RDX in there and you'll have a crater where that truck was.

Looking around at how fireworks are manufactured in the USA... Now what the fuck is this?
