A boxer is scary because of the precision of his punches. That and the 1000’s of hours beating on the heavy bag.

But honestly the biggest thing that surprised me about is the importance of your footwork. Have good footwork makes your punches so, so much better. I spend more time practicing footwork drills, than punching drills. I can get guys so pissed off at me sparring night because they can’t hit me because my feet are always moving.

I don't know if this is still true, but convicts would stay away from leg day thinking it would make them slow in a stand up fight, (I'm sure it's still true you don't want to be on the ground in a mele), but look at the tree trunks that are Tyson's legs and he's fast. I watched the majority of his early championship defenses, and I never saw him take a step backwards till Douglas caught him. He was constantly working to close the gap, which is how he was able to overcome his height disadvantage.

Unless you have ever been in a boxing match, you have no idea how tiring it is to have a guy constantly walk at you. The pressure they put on you just by taking those small steps forward saps your energy even if you’re not doing anything. It’s not only the physical aspect of but it’s also very mentally taxing. It’s crazy how much there is to boxing match, or any fighting sport for that matter.

Wrestled in Jr. and Sr. Highschool, I know what it's like to be tired. Football in the fall, wrestling in winter and swimming in the Spring. Football was by far the easiest sport as far as exertion goes.

This is going to be one for the ages. It isn't just a fight night. I bartended many years at one of the only bars that would pay the commercial fight night fees, and those fees still weren't as steep as the 2 local cops we'd hire for the night to keep the testosterone in line. Even with the cops I've had my ass handed to me just trying to keep the peace between idiots on more than one occasion.

This isn't going to be the normal fight night crowd. You've got the Gen Xer crowd who thinks they still have it versus the millennial crowd that runs their mouths on gaming sites and internet forums but haven't ever even done so much as an arm wrestling contest. The millennials are going to run their mouths like usual while the Xers (and pretty much everyone else on the planet) get tired of their shit, and it's going to come to a head before the arses can backpeddle their way out of it.

It's not a fight between matched boxers. This is a fight for bragging rights between generations.
I think you forget that millennials are 40 now. Our joints pop when we go to take a piss at 3am. Jake Paul fans are Gen Z.

Wrestling is a whole another level of endurance. My oldest son is gonna give it a shot this year. Hopefully he gets after it. He’s been doing Bjj for the last 3 years and the coaches have been pushing him to give wrestling a shot. Hopefully it will teach him some explosiveness.

There is a girl the same age as my son who rolls with him in Bjj. She can beat up on him on the takedown wise because she has been in wrestling for the last two years as well. I think that’s why he needs to up his game some :lmao:. Getting taken down by a girl is kinda humbling :lmao:.

I never had to cut a lot of weight, I mostly wrestled at my walk around weight, but some of the guys were always trying to drop 10# 2 days ahead of a match, so coaches would have the wrestling room at 85*, it was almost impossible to stay hydrated.

It was pretty surprising to me how different the 2 sports are. I had a fairly strong wrestling background going into bjj.... and wrestling seems to have an edge up untill the point it just doesnt matter at all... somewhere around purple belt in bjj.

Anyhow I sucked at it and quit both.

They cannot do that anymore. The sanctioning body weighs you at the beginning of the season and only lets you wrestle at a certain weight. They also make you take hydration tests to make sure you’re not cutting too much water. Kids shouldn’t be hardcore cutting weight.

Now my pro mma buddy, loses 18 lbs in a week in water weight to fight. He goes from 163 to 145z. He won his fight last week so it’s game on :smokin:

The biggest difference for my son is he is way to comfortable fighting off his back. Wrestling is gonna be a whole different ballgame in that regard.

I'm not a boxer, But I've been a a fan of the sweet science since I was young, And little stuff like that is what I pick up on when I watch a boxer, Guys that move forward even in little increments wear guys out, some guys are subtle about in but always forward motion,

All it takes is 1/2”- 3/4” per step and it puts the other guy into a completely different state. I love doing it to the young guys on sparring nights. They get so tired out and I’m in complete control. I make them have to stop me. :smokin: So much fun, allready getting pump to go sparring before the Tyson fight tonight. Maybe we’ll turn it on and watch it at the gym.

i cant like this enough. stepping into a card fight on a weeks notice in the spring was ROUGH. especially because the kid was 14 years younger than me.

i was told i put on a clinic, dodging and evading. he didnt actually hit me in the face, but i opened up some blood on his nose in the second and the 3rd round.

I guarantee he felt like shit the next day, i felt like a million bucks. Except my legs were tired. Thats what happens every single bout. by the end, its hard to walk because my legs are just destroyed.

Good.

I went to HS in central California, and when we'd be doing 2-a-day football practices pre-season, it would be over 100* in the afternoon practice on the regular. Coaches would give us salt tablets. Things have changed for sure.

I remember as a kid salt tabs at the lumber yard above the water cooler.

5’10” currently 185 been working down to hit the 175 pound class.

Might have to take you up having a hard time finding an older guy to get into the ring with. Our gym is putting on a show the 15th of March, coach has allready been looking for a fight for me.

That’s awesome!!! Im jealous you can find fights!!!

I cannot wait to get into the ring. I want to feel the excitement, anxiousness, nervousness of walking into a ring with someone who wants to tear your head off. I want to see how my mind and body reacts to that stress. Plus is gonna be a ton of fun putting some heat on a few shots. :smokin:

Buddy, it may not be what either one of us is looking for. im 6'4", 225, and if i actually have TIME to cut weight for a fight, I can get in at 210... but likely easier for me at 215. I also am not a square.... my reach is longer than my height... .so.... :grinpimp::beer:

But i am with you, i can move my feet and dodge more than i did when i was younger in my earlier fights. i still have the power i had, i only hit the heavy bags during workout, not water bags.... except for the wrecking ball.
