So i decided to try something. I bought a swofy

In a nutshell, its an 80gb mp3 player running on Android 9.0, for $48. it has a microsd slot that supports up to a 512gb sd card, which i also bought. You dont need to load music to the external slot if you dont want to, but my music library is over 40k songs so its kind of a necessity for me.
Bluetooth & wifi, and it comes loaded with Google Play Store (amongst other apps), and you can d/l and run apps off the app store.

Its about the same size as an ipod

I deleted a few apps & installed a few apps, but this is basically how it looks

That icon in the bottom left is the stock music player that it comes with. Its actually pretty decent; you can create & edit playlists, and it will also let you play playlists created externally (such as on my PC). The interface looks nice, and it works pretty good.

It has spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music and some other garbage preloaded but i deleted most of it, and then installed YT Music and Poweramp.

Havent used Poweramp in many years, so i installed it to see how it works. Did not disappoint.

You can transfer data to it via the USB-C port on the bottom, or you can load the micro-sd card externally and pop it back in. Its faster if you load it externally, which is how i transferred my music library over to it, but ive also added a couple albums to it this morning just by plugging it in to my PC and dragging & dropping. I think WinAMP might actually sync to it, but i havent tried yet.

2000mAh battery so battery life seems half decent. The Bluetooth seems stable. Sound quality seems decent too but my hearing sucks so who knows

Can confirm, it will play YT videos full screen, altho i have no idea what the battery life would be like doing so!

Ill keep you updated, but so far this seems like one hell of a music player for under $50.

Looks cool, BUT one of the great things to me are the physical buttons. Thats probably why the ipod touch never took off. Theres no replacement for a button you can touch, imo.

Its got buttons on the side. But yeah, its not like an ipod where you do everything thru the clickwheel, theyre basic for turning on the screen, volume up/down, track skip, etc.

The world has changed though; the masses want to stream, not own, so i doubt there will ever be another device quite like the Ipod Classic. The Touch is the blueprint for basically all the newer mp3 players. Theyre all basically phones now, but Apple fucked it up by loading them with bloatware you couldnt get rid of, and tried to turn it into something it could never be. At least with these android-based devices, you can install & delete the apps you want. My ipod will still live in the garage, but this cheapo device will do well in my truck or at work.

I finally put together that moonlit.market kit I got. I put a clear faceplate and click wheel on it too and replaced the screen. I got the faceplate, wheel and screen from Elite Obsolete Electronics. I had to slightly sand out the opening for the click wheel but everything went together easily. The kit is very nice and is working great. I was put off by having to glue the back on but it turned out nicer than I expected. I even had to open it back up after I glued it because I didn't notice a cat hair on the screen inside. A little heat and it popped open easily. I put RockBox on it but haven't played around with it much. Added two 128 gb cards in it. The ipods do feel a little cheesey without the weight of the hard drive in them.

It looks a little weird with the backplate being taller/wider than the face plate. I guess that doesnt matter when its in your pocket though.
How well does the bluetooth work?

hadn't thought about that. part of the appeal of the classic, to me, was the weight/feel.

may try out one of the cheap android powered players instead of modding my old classic. especially since they have bluetooth. have to find the ipod first

Yeah, I think with the clear faceplate it full feels aftermarket so it's not a big deal. On one you wanted to keep looking factory it would mater more. The way it fits together though it's not an issue for me. Bluetooth has been good so far but I've only tested it with some sony headphones. Supposedly the airpod pros have issues sometimes but they disclosed that on the site.

As much as I love the clear faceplates, I wonder if it wouldn't look better with a black faceplate and click wheel. Or maybe black faceplate and white click wheel?

Did you do the tie-in for data transfer via USB -C?

Have you messed around with Rockbox at all? I installed a theme that's similar to the original iPod interface because I like the cleaner minimal look of it over RB's default theme. Of all my iPods, the one with RB is the only one I use regularly. I just like using RB.

With the SD card conversion they are pretty light. I know what you mean about the weight, but on the flip side it's so light you don't really notice it in your pocket.

I'm actually really digging that Swofy, now that I'm running Poweramp on it. And the full Bluetooth control is nice when playing thru the trucks head unit.

i'm very tempted to tri an android version over updating my Classic. Currently I'm streaming my library with Plexamp to my phone, but I kind of want to setup an offline player I can move from car to car.

i do a ton of audiobooks too, the android version would let me run that player as well.

theoretically I could just use my phone for everything. but i like having a separate unit, for whatever reason

Yeah I get it. I like to be able to walk away from my phone and be "unavailable". The world is too connected these days. So having a stand-alone music player is really nice. I can completely disconnect and just listen to some tunes while I'm in the garage or mowing the grass or whatever. The iPod is great for that, but I really want Bluetooth! And it's arguably cheaper to buy a cheapo music player with proper Bluetooth control than to add primitive Bluetooth to an iPod. Yeah I could buy an iPod touch, but I've had one, and I actually prefer the Swofy over the Touch.

hobbies may cross over, asking in this thread

anyone install modchips? Nintendo switch particularly. Don't have the time or experience. service is $100ish with chip so not super expensive, but I'd rather throw someone on here $$ than a random etsy seller if so

its a V1 so I CAN softmod it, but i failed 3x, don't have the patience, and don't want to have to deal with the RCM boot jig. i want pick up and play

Pay the people that do it every day. Bonus is that if they fuck it up they probably have a pile of dead ones to pull parts from.
