This is hard to believe, but I sware. I’ll try to keep it short.

Some of you know I had a dock built. The guy we hired had the lowest quote. He did give me and my wife the “meth head vibe”, but we looked at several of the docks he built for other people and his was the best. The people sang high praise for him.

The deal was to pay him 15K in three payments as work was completed. He completed the first part and we paid him. On the second area of work, there was some misunderstandings and I needed to do some research about what he was doing. During this time one night he sent my wife 15 texts (not an exaggeration) that were basically saying the same thing. We figured he was drunk or high or both. Anyways I called him up and told him my wife is getting worked up and I don’t want him to send her another text. He said “I will never send her another text in life”.

The next day I did my research and what he was doing was OK, so all was good. I went down and gave him the second check. While I was there, I pointed out that he was soon going to be drilling holes for stainless bolts. I had seen other dock builders drill these holes crooked and I told him to be extra careful when drilling ours. He assured me he would.

That night my wife and I were out eating and drinking with some friends. He sends my wife 42 texts. (Not an exaggeration) They were all pretty similar and basically said “don’t crucify him if the bolts arnt perfectly straight.” He said “it’s hard to start it straight and the drill can wonder. If he had said this to me at the time, I would have made him a drill guide. Anyways, after 42 texts, I told my wife to block the number.

The next day he sends me a text and says the dock is done and I should inspect it to let him know what he needs to fix. My wife and I go down there and the dock is great. Everything is lazar straight and we are real happy. I call his number and get his answering machine. I tell him I’m real happy and I have the last check for him.

This is the weird part. He hasn’t made another contact in a week and a half. I’ve left multiple messages. He has completely goasted me and my wife. Not only do I have a 15K check for him, but my wife tells me that he still hasn’t cashed the second check. He doesn’t have an office and this phone number is the only way I have to contact him. I don’t even know where he lives.

I know everybody here is going to tell me to not pay him, but the work is good and I owe him the money. A deal is a deal. It’s really mind boggling.

I had a non-meth head contractor move a heater and gas line in my garage the second week in may. I still haven't received an invoice from him. I even left him a voicemail two weeks ago making sure he didn't forget.

The jobs done, so he's tripping balls on the first $15k, will cash the next check when that runs out, then will text looking for the last $15k.
lol, was going to say exactly this.

Don't worry about it, you'll hear from him if he doesn't get locked up. Then once he gets out, expect a call for one of those 15k checks.

Never, ever use the lowest bidder. You take your highest and lowest bids, toss them the fuck out then pick whoever is the most competent and least bullshit to work with out of whoever is left over assuming their bids are in the same ballpark. At least speaking generally and assuming they picked up the same work in their scopes.

This^^

He's in jail. He will be around to get his money soon enough
Then this^^

He'll come shuffling over for his last check in a few weeks when he gets out for time served.

I have two non-tweaker contractors that I owe money to who haven't called me back or sent an invoice, one for about $25,000, the other $15,000. I had one that took weeks to collect the $35,500 I cash I had waiting for him. I finally sent him a message I was going to have to deposit it back in the bank because I didn't want that much cash around. Then, he came right over. He's the same guy I owe $15,000, but this time I'm leaving the money in the CU earning 5% until he decides to get paid.

tell me you didnt read the entire op without telling me you didnt?

:lmao:

Probably for steeling lumber and hardware. The type of stuff one might build a dock out of.

We also talked to the supplier he uses prior hiring him. They sang high praise. I was amazed he paid for a lot and did work before his first check. My wife figured he must have an account at that place. I was thinking of contacting them to get an address or something.

We did a lot research and visiting references and looking at docks. You wouldn’t believe the number one dock builder with all the best equipment does shitty work.

I skimmed, sue me. :flipoff2:

Reread it, it still applies. They wouldn't be dealing with some meth head and trying to get him paid if they hadn't hired the lowest bidder, so suck it. :flipoff2:

There’s a guy local to me that I know is a meth head. I use him for all my cement work. I’ve done quite a bit of business with him and he is very reliable and he does good work. I don’t really care what someone does on their off time.

You'd think if he is jail he would be calling for bail money. Assuming it's an offense he could post bail on.

I agree with this, except that the OP got a 45k dock built for 15k part.

I thought a concrete guy being a tweaker is the norm??

Years ago my dad hired a friends son to paint our house that was trying to get sober and start a painting company. The guy went and bought the paint showed up with employees , ladders etc. painted three sides of the house. Told my dad will be back tomorrow to finish up.

Never came back went on a bender left materials and ladder. Dad waited a few months we painted last side of the house with our new ladder. Never heard from the dude. Talked to the friend he was basically like my son is out using drugs fuck him.

You've done your due diligence IMO. If he shows up, pay the man. If he doesn't, then you got a dock for 1/3 price. Sweet!

You're under no legal nor moral obligation to bend over backwards to try to find him to pay him.
