What's new

Hurricane Milton

I think it formed in the usual place, just rolled up the Mexican coast and made a right turn

Our Fabtech set up crew is arriving today, I'm flying in next monday. (watching the storm as well)

I hope everything goes as well as it can for everyone.

I have been considering flying into Fabtech for a day, just to check out the new offerings from Trumpf since we desperately need a new laser. But if it's hurricane central, maybe not.

They always come from the Atlantic. That's why this area has never had a direct hit.
Yes they do form in the atlantic, then some move into the gulf, sometimes (not often) they go west into South America sometimes those have enough power we get rains all the way up to New Mexico! Most either go horth or slightly east, some even directly east this one is predicted to turn east enough to possiable hit your bit of paradice

My parents live on Long Boat Key just off the coast of Sarasota. They flew to Atlanta and are staying up there for the duration of the storm. Their building is on the Sarasota Bay side of the island and is rated to take the storm but they didn't want to chance it.

As of right now it looks like i may make it to Tampa before the wind.
Straight to lake Wales Tuesday afternoon, then babysit 4mw worth of generators if the power goes out. Plan is to shut down half the lights to conserve fuel.
Tried getting on an earlier flight tonight, but no dice.

Weather is showing hood for the show- provided it can be set up for. Our move in date is Wednesday Thursday, just so happens to coincide with when storm is hitting.

So far no one at work seems concerned??? Guess they know something I don’t.

There's been other hurricanes that have formed in the gulf, but it's exceedingly rare.

They're saying now that it's going to calm down some prior to landfall, but that doesn't help with the storm surge. Saw one report of 40' waves in the gulf now, which could translate to 60' as it gets into shallower water.

My parents and brother are in the Brandon area, other brother is near lecanto.

Both Parents were here in Utah until my dad flew home Saturday night to board up the house.

Unfortunately I have a large event in Vegas this weekend that I cannot miss for work(self employed) but if its catastrophic, my mom and I will be driving from Utah next Monday with supplies to help out.

Hopefully our extreme planning will be a waste of time.

Gulf and Carribean forming hurricanes aren't rare. It happens almost every year. It is uncommon for them to hit the western coast of Florida. Milton started as a storm that came from the Pacific across Mexico then became a hurricane in the gulf, and that is rare. Most storms that form on the western edge of Mexico go west into the Pacific.

He's a little condescending about it, but here's a video showing all the tropical and sub tropical paths by month.

My father flew back to to St. Petersburg last night. At the mid point of an addition to their house down there. He was down there for a month because the crew fucked up with the last storm, left part of the roof open. Fortunately not a ton of rain and he is now down to just running dehumidifiers and monitoring wall dampness. Supposed to evacuate today, not sure where he plans on going yet.
I've got an aunt and uncle that live in St. Pete Beach, not sure their plans either. Another aunt and uncle have a winter house on the next street over from them. They're up here at home.
Hoping for the best.

Heard Cat 5 this morning also.

I’m south of the path and on the east coast so expecting some wind and rain out of this one. Got a co-worker driving over this way from Sarasota today. Good luck to everyone closer.

Currently helping a friend get his genny running. His woman is talking about heading out now, but they are saying the evacuation traffic has their way out blocked.

Not always.

A lot of storms form up in the same place as Ol' Milton. They mostly turn north much sooner and hit Mexico, Texas or Louisiana. Generally, they don't get very big before they hit land. They just don't have the time to grow.

But you can be 100% sure that there have been many storms that have followed the exact same path as Milton over the past 100 thousand years or more. Only difference is that we are here to see it.

My people in Naples are headed out. House is getting locked down

Titusville here. They are taking the billboard down here. Never seen that before. Not evacuating, hoping I turns. Current track has it exiting the state over my house.

This is why I never left when I lived there.

Leave four days early and miss work and 90% of the time it would miss where I lived.

Leave two days early and get stuck in an I-95 traffic jam that ran from 520 all the way up to Jax.

Add to that the fact that my gf and I both had TJ's and neither could carry enough fuel to get out of the state when you consider that you'll be sitting in traffic and competing for the same gas at the exits as everyone else.

Pretty much. I'm keeping up with Ryan Hall here and there. Guess this one depends on how much Mexico land slows it down (if at all). My friend is in Dade City. Looks to be in the direct patch of this.

My former employer has stores all along the I-4 corridor (Winter Haven, Kissimmee, Orlando, Longwood, DeLand, and Daytona Beach plus New Smyrna, Gainesville, Jax, Pinellas Park and Sebring) so I know lots of folks who are going to be impacted as well as my former customers.

During the 2004 hurricane extravaganza, we only closed certain stores for maybe three days, but man, what choice do you have? Sit and wait and clean up after and get back to work or leave, miss work, lose money, sit in traffic, pay too much for fuel and lodging, and then they won't let you return unless you're a contractor or an electric company on the way south to fix something.
