Honky Lips gets his private pilots license

Every time I get the urge to sign up I go sit in a plane I could technically afford and remind myself that I can't afford a plane that a 6'6" guy could comfortably ride in. :flipoff2:

I would own a plane by now but don't want to be saddled with maintenance and hangar fees. Pipe dream is enough land for grass runway and something in the experimental category. Luckily I can get almost the same thrill on a motorcycle, for now.

Good for you OP. I've got ~10 hrs of training so far and really enjoying it.

One thing that was recommended to me and now I'd also recommend is paying the $2-300 on an online ground school video training program that after completion gives you the endorsement to sit for the FAA written exam. Your instructor will thank you for it as you'll have exposure to/knowledge of topics prior to practicing them (thus saving time & money).

I had already found it before my first lesson, but my instructor told me that I forget the name but I will get back to you on this. A YouTuber has the entire course on his YouTube channel. He says just watch it learn it and you’ll save a shit load of time and money.

You get in a plane?
I'm 6'4" and have room, some are tight, but you can do it if you want to you just have to find the model

Any advice guidance for how a 13 year old should proceed?
The CAP is absolutely not my rec, but it's a good path for some folks.

I'd steer a kid to gliders to start. Cheaper to test the waters, and a GREAT foundation for anything they want to do in flying afterwards.

Drop me a line if you want to chat about it.

Dang .... Congrats OP...Got my licence back in the late 70's... Early 80 is the last time I flew.
Just for shits and giggles; how much is fuel now days. :smokin::smokin::smokin::smokin:

Keep it up!!! One of my buddy’s in college had a family ‘76 Cessna and his license. We would fly from Chico to ft Bragg for him to go abalone diving, when it was legal. Anyways, he let me take off and fly even over the sierras. But I’ve always heard landing if the difficult part. Don’t know never tried :lmao:

Out of all the things I've done in my life, learning to fly was the best. I had a great career in aviation and got to fly in a lot of cool aircraft. But my favorite was my 7AC Champ, I flew it a little over 900 hours.

Best advice I can offer is, don't fly in bad weather, don't get "get thereitis" it will probably kill you, always have full tanks when you take off, there's much more.

Have a great time flying!!!

Or lawn darts into a cornfield. you'll have to catch that on the news as I wont be able to update this thread.

took the leap and got signed up for the classes. Did my first flight today, and it was definitely different. Seems odd to be able to be in control on day 1, did banking turns and a giant square following nsew directions. maintaining steady altitude while turning is tough along with throttle control. this is gonna be an interesting adventure. plan is to eventually get my own plane to fly around on my own and not be at the mercy of commercial airlines and the disaster they have become.

anyone got any tips tricks, good YouTube channels to subscribe to or anything else?

What's your total estimated cost when it's all said and done? I used to have to take the 107 (drone) test at an official testing center and the closest one to me was the flight school at the airport. I'd talk to them every time I'd go. Seemed like you were looking at a minimum of $20k if you picked it all up on the first try and didn't need any extra instructed flights.

My flying career was nicely paid for in it’s entirety by the military industrial complex

In return I got 7 years of adventure and excitement, and formed bonds with buddies that I still have today. Wonderful time in my life I will never regret.

I bailed for a life of a vagabond at sea so never went whole hog commercial. Only minor side effects from combat flying that fuck you up for life like PTSD or losing your best friends / colleagues.

Kinda minor compared to a career in commercial aviation which can leave you divorced multiple times, baby momma’s/hosties wanting cash, and you living in a JetBlue crash pad with 25 other grey haired old bastards who would rather be on their adventure bike than behind a joystick.

Makes that $150kplus you invested in your commercial license all worthwhile right?

I did a few lessons about 10 years ago and loved it.

I really want to get my lic and get a small plane but between my wife swearing that she would never ever get in a small plane and the math not penciling out for owning one, I guess i will never be able to fly myself around.

good for you and have fun!
ditto. I think i could sell off enough other toys to make it happen. wife absolutely wont get in a plane, so thats out . but id love too. oh well, just another lifes dissapointment kicking us in the balls. :lmao:

So much this!

I grew up flying. I always thought it was cool, but never realized how cool because I thought it was normal and everyone did it. Dad taught me starting when I was big enough o reach the yoke in his bird. Soloed a glider on my 14th b-day, power plane on my 16th.

I fly for work, but fuck riding on an airline for vacation. Here's my wife and I somewhere between Pensacola and Denver last week in my bird. Learn to fly, it's such a cool way to waste time and money. The ONLY problem with it is that it competes with time and money for the Jeep.

I agree, flying is awesome, I sure do miss it.

We need more pics of the wife and less of you. :flipoff2:

You ever land at FNL I am sure the northern Colorado crew would put food and beer to you in a non romantic manner

Also more specs on the bird. The flying one not the pax
Was it you that had the tail draggers? Or built the belly carriers?
I have several hundred hours on C185’s. What a wonderful little plane. So capable.
All my logged hours are tail draggers. I have many thousand unlogged hours as I never bothered logging any civilian flying (regret that now, log every hour). My wife had a Tobago when I met her and we flew everywhere and got up to some antics in that lovely little bird, the plane I mean :lmao:

Cool on you OP. I always thought it’d be cool to fly a helicopter but I know that’ll never happen for me.

I always wondered what small plane pilots do when up in the air in the middle of nowhere and then the overwhelming urge to shit comes at you like a hammer? Anyway, happy flying.

You know it is like 35.00 a year to be a kid in CAP?

They open the hatch in the floor and shit in your sunroof from 5,000'. :flipoff2:

76 185, I brought it home on a truck and spent 5 years getting it flying. The wife took 5 years so sort out before I decided she may be worth keeping as well.

I do build belly pods for 185s, along with a few other mods.

I'll ping you if I get an FNL trip in the queue. They don't seem to like folks who burn 100LL up there though.

I said it's not MY rec. They CAN get free PPL? I didn't know that, but do all of them? Lots of marching and things that aren't my bag there. I never said don't do it, but it isn't he path I'd recommend. That may be from lack of experience, but I went to one CAP meeting and figured out pretty quickly it wasn't for me. Your kid seems to be kicking ass in CAP, good on her. I don't slight it, but it aint for me.

Gliders are a cheap way to dip your toe in the water. Probably not for everyone, but I liked it.

Civil Air Patrol isn't easy, it is a package deal
but you aren't going to waltz in there and scholarship a PPL, you are going to earn it
coming from a parent of a cadet, it is a great program

edit
also learning in the G1000
and her plane is 4 only years old
AND the little fugger gets to use the AFB

Fighter jet.....lands
C17's come in and lands
my kid, in the 172 boinging down the runway touching and going having no clue how good she has it

I'm telling you, it has great perks, you just have to embrace the program

My stepsons dad has his license. It's kinda funny when we do the kid exchange and meet him at the local airstrip.

He'd rather rent a plane for 120 an hr plus fuel than drive the 6 hr round trip in his prius every other weekend he plays Disneyland dad

6 hours in a Prius? I think I’d rather have root canal surgery.
