Between the two, I would say the monkey.

I'm a big overweight guy so I wouldn't ride either.
Definitely the trail 125 if something from that platform was wanted.

I rode mine in rush hour traffic on the interstate every day. In fact, most vehicles gave me WAY more room (200+yds) BECAUSE it's so small.

Regardless I get it if it's not 'your thing'; some people care about looking cool, others don't and have more fun. :flipoff2:
I remember when you got that thing. You were trying to set new lap records around the circle on/off ramps.

It's not got nothing to do with looking cool. I bought a new zx10 and got drunk and done a terrible job of wrapping it. Just so it wouldn't be so noticeable. I ride for the excitement and thrill of hauling ass and living life as I see it. I care nothing for the feeling of the "wind in my hair" or holding up traffic on the interstate.

Some people are mundane enough to think that holding up traffic on the interstate is fun. Some people like passing cars and lane splitting and running from the cops at 180 as fun. To each their own. I wish I could live a life that mundane. I would probably be much happier.

They look fun as hell. I'd be down for ripping around town on one.. not sure about a freeway. I don't trust California drivers.

I think deep down I need something that can also hit dirt. Hence why i've been eyeballing a TW

I prefer the older standard honda horizontal engine platform that came in the SL70, XL70, CT70, ST90, CT90, CRF50, Xr50 etc...
I've built a couple minis with 150cc, 160cc and 190cc engine swaps and they're a blast. The nice thing about the older platform is the engines are easily upgraded or swapped out and they're carbureted and easy to tune. With that said, I would get any bike that uses the older engine platform. Even a grom clone

We have that here in CMRA and TMGP (Texas Mini Grand Prix). Basically you can change a external stuff, but can’t change internals. CMRA is a shortened big track that we are already using for the weekend, so it’s a bit boring. Mostly kids doing that, due to it’s all full throttle, so a lightweight rider is key. TMGP is done on go cart tracks and are much more fun And technical. Most of those riders are “retired” CMRA racer that are still wanting to have fun without the expense of big bike and high probably of massive injuries.
That's cool! I could see the draw of it in general for the reasons you mentioned. Sounds like the series draw a bit of a different crowd as well. Also jealous you have enough participation to have two series and sanctioning bodies in your area.

Back to the OP- you mentioned you were going to get two? Get one of each :grinpimp:

What type of riding are you going to be doing ? I wouldn't ride one on the freeway in my area but I could see going to town or back roads. I see a group of Grom's buzz down my road on the weekends there's a lot of bike traffic on this road so no surprise it's usually large groups of Harley's or crotch rockets. I could see getting a Monkey for bombing around the yard with the kid she has a Suzuki alt 50. I don't see the guys I ride with getting a Grom to bomb back roads on our mini bike days are probably behind us.

Okay, so now I can't stop thinking about a Grom, and I really want one.

Anyone have experience with the Grom clones?

The only one I’m familiar with is the Razkull. I don‘t have one personally, but several friends do and love them. This was a few years ago and don’t know how they are now. Plus they look like a mini Ducati monster with the trellis frame. :smokin:

Seen a couple of the SSRs they look cool, buddy bought a couple. They are cheaper but not sure about quality. Honda is hard to beat.

I want a Grom, but Its embarrassing just thinking about being seen on it. I couldn't imagine actually doing it in real life
ive never ridden one, but theres a big welding shop down the road from my shop, dude works their has a grom and he just rides a wheelie everywhere he goes kinda jelly.

150 miles a day on a grom would suck for me but i think they are awesome, although a bit pricey IMO, but they are awesome

Thanks dick. I've spent all day researching how to get my motorcycle permit and also watching YouTube Grom videos.

I'll definitely be getting a clone one though. As much as i love Honda quality, Im a cheap bastard and 1700 bucks shipped to my door is hard to beat

Benelli TNT 135. Stomps everything listed so far. Reliability seems to be solid so far. And it looks like a little MV Agusta. 2.5k

I'm pretty sure my 190cc 5 speed engine will stomp the Benelli. imho a grom clone with a 190cc engine swap would be the best bang for buck. With its top speed being a little over 80mph, it makes cruising at 55 nice without having the engine revved out.
As far as Honda quality goes, the clone bikes are very similar in build quality and aftermarket engines bolt right in. The grom engine is a slightly different configuration than previous honda horizontal engines and requires an adapter to run aftermarket engines.

You can find a used grom for that. Most don't have over 2k mi on them either. Honda reliability and parts availability are key.

Well as far as a pit bike, a play around the house bike or a smaller road race training bike they would be great. To actually ride on the road like a normal full-size adult motorcycle. No way in hell. You would look like a fawking idiot. Unless you a 4'10" tall adult male, grow a set and get a real motorcycle.
What, a real bike like this? "cause no one would look like a fawking idiot on one of these :p

Look like an idiot like necro-ing a 2-year dormant thread to point out a dumb opinion?

:flipoff2:

Thanks for bringing this back to life. I love the little bikes. I wanted a TW200 bad a couple years back. Then I got a DRZ, and then a CRF450L, and got my wife an XT250. And ordered her a 300LS.

I still think of how much fun it was to flog a borrowed TW down the Pig Trail in Arkansas. I’ve never ridden one offroad, but I’m confident I’d have a blast with that, too.

I’m terrible about scope creep. I’d really want a FI TW300 with 6 gears, and it would definitely lose ALL its TW-ness in the redesign. But damn, the old adage about the fun of wringing anything out to the max instead of getting something more capable than you are—it’s at least as true for motorcycles, and I can never just believe that it always applies.

No thats not a "real" bike either. A fucking money pit to sit around and look at, maybe ride very uncomfortably to some bar or show or show bar maybe sure. You would look about the same riding that as a grom around town to me but I have dumb opinions.
