I am wanting to buy a pair of bikes. Either Honda GROM's or Honda Monkey's
( I want a pair, the same)

Which one would you pick?

They are both 125's, and it is my understanding they power train is the same, (Both using the same 125, transmission and gearing).

If they have the same performance and handling, I will lean to the Monkey, because I like the look, but are they truly the same performance? Do they feel the same (or similar enough)?

Those of you who have experience with these, please chime in.

Monkey for the retro vibe or Grom for the updated look. I like the Grom better. I own neither.:flipoff2:

I've got a monkey and I love the thing. My wife got it for me because I also have a 1969 z50 that looks like it's little brother.

A couple friends (who both were on Groms) and I road around Moab with them and even did Fins 'n Things on them. I think they're pretty close to the same performance wise. I did put on a different sprocket and rear shocks to compensate for my fatass.

Grom probably has a better aftermarket/following/forums/mods etc... That alone would swing me.

I have a OG Grom. I do like it but would go with Monkey if doing it again. I don't like the look of the new Grom as much. The single round headlight looks sweet on the Monkey.

I'd probably rather have a Trail 125 though. Toss up between that or a monkey for me.

It was my understanding that most GROM mods (such as 14 T sprocket, etc.
This isn't the same as the classic monkey but regardless, there's a shit ton of parts for both.

I want a fucking side car for mine.

I think a LOT of the parts / support are interchangeable for the Monkey and Grom. They kinda seem like the same bike with a different tank/ body kit. But I am not sure enough to know for sure, hence the thread.

Grom has a 5 speed trans, Monkey is a 4. Grom also got a compression bump this year.

I don't think they are the same frame. I have knobbies on my Grom so handling isn't my top goal.

Pretty sure those aren't out in the US, yet. at least that's what my dealer told me. Said, probably next year.

Also said, the 5 speed has the same top gear as the 4 speed, and he didn't think it would be a game changer.

The higher compression may be nice though.

I am wondering if they will make the same change to the Monkey.

ah yeah figures. Should have thought of that.

Grom is a tad lighter because plastic instead of metal, but monkey seat is MUCH more comfortable. Had a Grom, would've bought a Monkey instead if they were avail at the time.

If you are a taller guy like me a grom will be a much better choice. You can get a dual sport type "knobby" and stiffer springs for offroad. There is also some super competitive road racing classes for them. Lots of motor hop ups and stuff like that.

The monkey has been sold in Japan for years. Probably can get just about anything for one of those as well.

I built a trick xr50 almost 20 years ago. I used a takegawa 106 kit with the super head and a manual clutch 4 speed. Damn thing was pretty much unrideable for me. As tall as I am couldn't keep the front end down for it to steer worth a shit even with inverted forks and a bigger frame and nice shock.

A spec. Grom class would be pretty fun :grinpimp:

Otherwise I'm having a hard time convincing myself I need one except I could probably be "that asshole" that commutes to work via the bike path on it :flipoff2:

That's a good site for motor parts. I would honestly say a lot of those guys in the grom classes are more competitive on them than full size bikes. Not near the chance of getting hurt going down on a grom than a full size at 100mph kinda thing. So they push a lot harder on them

Neither. I'll be picking up a Honda Cub once the panic shortage is over with.

Wow, that name is a blast from the past! :grinpimp:

Takegawa makes some bad ass high end Honda and Kawasaki parts. I built a KLX110 many years ago to get into pitbike racing and used their manual clutch kit, 4 speed shift drum, and the Super Head +R in the build. Those were some of the nicest dirt bike parts I have ever laid my hands on. :smokin:
