headlight tech

Depends on the housing. Our 17 JKU lights would be unusable in 20 minutes in wet snow as the recessed light buckets collected snow and the bulb housing wasnt warm enough to melt it. On my Ram the snow just slides off the sides so I have yet to have icing issues. My lightbar mounted lower on the bumper would completely snow over as well, but it usually wasnt on because light bars in traffic are fucking retarded. That being said, the 5k color of most LED's is absolutely horrid in wet conditions overall. Really making me want to get some yellow aux lights mounted for the snowy and wet night drives.
I got my folks the heated housing, will see how they work.

I have a few sets of amber aux LEDS and they work better, not great. They ice over pretty quickly. It's jsut filtered white light and that doesn't seem to be quite the same as an Amber source or emitter.

How long do they stay clear? I’ve never seen anyone have luck polishing their headlights and not have them cloud up again in short order.

On any car with plastic headlights I have them clear coated with 3M UV film. helps a ton, and helps with pitting also

If you base your opinion of the quality of light distribution solely on having a "flat cutoff" I see no reason to further discuss lighting with you.
? Eat a dick?
Not really sure how to spar with you on the volatile topic of headlight cutoff.

Candlepowerforum is the irate4x4 of lighting. There's a subsection there for vehicle lighting but the folks there are as brutal as folks on here. If you try and build anything that would blind people on road they call you an idiot and delete your shit. If you watch how you say it there are some smart mother fuckers to ask questions to there.

Hidplanet as well though a bit more politely

So I need to replace the housing on my 08 tacoma as it seems to be trying to fix the CA drought by producing water even on dry days.

any brand suggestions? Did a light search and reviews are all over the map

There are 2 different certifications for replacement headlight housings. I forget which is which but you'll be able to tell by price! Then make sure you don't buy by price.

I want to say going with tyc brand is a solid choice outside of OEM..

I've got a Depo brand on my crown vic, I did buy on price since that capa certification is a bit of a farce. Gotta be on the car 4 years now, outside 24/7 still clear.

Here’s a cut/paste that I’ve been intending to try:

Hey guys, just thought I'd post an easy bulb upgrade mod for our F150. Our truck uses a H11 bulb for low beam, 9005 for high beam & a 9140 for fogs. Now with a little modifying to the new high & low beam bulbs, you'll have double the light output from OEM replacement bulbs. It goes like this, replace your H11 with a H9 bulb, replace your 9005 with a 9011 & take your 9005 bulbs & put them as your fog light bulbs. Here's why:
Stock H11 = 1,350 Lumens
Replacement H9 = 2,100 Lumens
Stock 9005 = 1,700 Lumens
Replacement 9011 = 2,350 Lumens
Stock 9140 = 600 Lumens
Replace with your 9005 = 1,700 Lumens

So I was about to buy the stuff to do this, but vatozome was out of 9011s.

I generally hate the led head light deal, because they blind everyone.

But what about led's in just the high beam? I don't see why not?

In a high beam go ahead and try it.

Personally, I haven't seen an aftermarket LED that puts out good usable light regardless the beam pattern. My main concern is inclimate weather and led light as a whole seems to absolutely suck in that. I think it has a lot to do with the generally poor CRI of LED lighting.

FYI, the big allure of the 9011's used to be that they were available in HIR bulbs. I haven't kept up if HIR 9011's still exist but I know the original version stopped being produced.

My thought is that you aren't using high beams in snow or fog anyway.

Quoting this because my truck uses similar bulbs in different positions.

04 colorado
9005 for highs
9006 for low
H11 for fogs

Half-assed plan for new housings
9005 to 9011 for highs
9006 to 9005 for lows
H11 to h9 for fogs.

Question I ran into while looking through bulbs, 9006 has a coated tip to the bulb. What happens when I throw a 9005 in without the coated tip? Do I blind the nuns? Are 9006's the same as 9005's but the tip dip drops the lumens? Illuminate me

No, it works great. It's one of my go-to's for basic upgrades.

Edit: to clarify, the only really drawback to swapping the "high beam" bulbs in place of then "low beam" bulbs is reduced bulb life. I go through a set of bulbs in the low beams once a year now. I just buy the basic bulbs for this, they're usually like $7 each. I think last time I bought a dozen and then pre-trimmed the tab out of them all at one time.

The dipped tip or not doesn't seem to change the beam pattern at all. At least not enough to notice.

At least in the h9 vs. h11 case, the h11 "low beam" is capped at that lumen output. The regurgitation is that it's legally capped there, I've never looked to see if that's true. The "high beam" h9's have no regulation.

because you've stripped the UV protection off the plastic.

You need to seal them again after.
get a UV lamp to cure them quickly.
buff after.
will last for years.
Well shit. I'll have to try that. My lights looked great then went to shit in a week.

Well, if anyone was interested in these from the other thread DWT and I completely derailed :flipoff2: guy responded and they're $38/pr.

I think I'm going to give them a shot, fuck it :homer:

How did these work out for you?

Several posters have mentioned the relay mod to run factory lights straight off the battery. I did this to my 95 XJ, night and day difference, literally. Has to be best bang for the buck and at least worth trying before making a major investment. Probably cost me $20 in parts. If you don't have a soldering gun, maybe buy a kit.

Here's a good one: I have an FJ62 that I would love to upgrade to LED housings, but I want to retain as close to the stock look to passersby during the day. Sealed beam units. H4656 low and H4651 high. I Already know the trick of putting H4656 in both positions and running a jumper so the low and high operate at the same time on high, but I was really hoping to find something plug and play to put LED housings in that would really light up the dark. Maybe even some round off-road lights for the roof rack in a retro look (no light bars or anything).

Ideers?
